Dota2 getting owned by League's championships LAST YEAR LEWL. its 1.01 million for dota excluding any korean stream or any of the tv broadcasts. of the event. adjusted for total playerbase dota did manage numbers that would equal to 5 million concurrent for league. Did the League figure include TV broadcasts in China/Korea? I remember seeing an infographic that estimated the number of viewers for TV broadcasts in China/Korea, but those numbers weren't/shouldn't be included in the 1.1 million viewer record for League Championships last year. This debate over viewership is kinda dumb anyways. TI3 was ridiculously successful regardless of whatever metric you use. S2 LoL World Championships was also very successful, again regardless of whatever metric was used. Esports becoming bigger and more mainstream should be great news to gamers everywhere regardless of what game is driving or co-driving the movement. The only relevant discussion is what Riot can learn from TI3 and hopefully top or at least rival TI3's production value. I think S2 Worlds and All-Stars have had greater production value than TI3... but I feel like TI3 just had the better atmosphere. It really feels like a community event with Valve backing. It's like if EVO suddenly had a ton of money and could do whatever they want with it.
On the other hand, it feels like S2 Worlds and All-Stars definitively have Riot's fingerprints all over it. One of the bigger comparisons would be like the orchestral introduction for Worlds vs. the WWE-style introduction of Na'Vi and Alliance where they just walked down the aisle high-fiving everyone.
I know S3 Worlds will be big. I know the production values are gonna be high. But I don't know if they can match the atmosphere and feel of TI3.

If NaVi had backdoored Alliance I'd be over the moon. I know everyone's praising S4 for his game-changing Puck ultis, but I honestly think the second Puck ulti, the one that stopped Dendi's TP back home, was more a misplay on the part of Dendi and Puppey than anything. For one thing, Dendi TP'd to throne rather than mid tower or fountain, which resulted in a considerably longer TP channel time. On top of that, when Puppey was running away from S4, he ran towards Dendi. I don't believe S4 had vision of Dendi and wouldn't have ulted Dendi if it wasn't for Puppey basically leading S4 towards Dendi. It's alright, because he also had the god like ult that stopped most of Navi and let them trade mid racks for both top and bot racks. I thought that one was more impressive anyway. Still, capitalizing on your opponents mistakes is part of the game.

But Na'Vi was only there due to Orange performing the biggest throw in the history of DotA LANs
My biggest worry about worlds for LoL is that given its long duration and timegaps it seems unavoidable that there will be some sort of typical riot interference shortly before/during the championships with regards to balance and meta that can completely destroy the styles and hard work of the teams and instead give significant advantages to teams that correctly guessed what riot will buff randomly and hugely nerf the teams unfortunate enough to play champs affected by the nerfbat

I swear I recall a red post talking about wanting to give players enough time to adjust to big changes. I guess we'll see, but I hope Riot would be smart enough to only make small patches from here on out.

Soccer in USA fails pretty hard. Your implication is that a game that has a higher percentage of its audience interested in e-sports is the more successful e-sports game, which isn't true. It is possible for something that is not directly geared toward an e-sports audience (and therefore garners a large casual playerbase that is irrelevant to e-sports to also be a successful e-sports game. I don't see how that makes the game worse, despite making it weaker in terms of your chosen statistic. Thats not the implication. I specifically stated what it measures IN the post you quoted yango. it measures how successful the EVENT is at reaching its core audience. And "how successful the event is at reaching its core audience" is a silly measurement. Think about it from a business perspective, running a department store. To increase profits, one can either try to increase profits per customer, or increase the number of customers overall. If the first several customers are "hardcore" customers and spend a lot of $$$, but the next several customers are "casual" shoppers and spend less $, then you will still be making more $$ even though your "profits per customer" metric has gone down. In the end, the only thing that really matters is overall profit.
Besides, lol's playerbase includes people like my girlfriend, who plays 1-2 ARAMs per week and never watches any competitive games. Is she part of the "core audience"?

I'm guessing (and hoping) that if Riot chooses to patch the game between the playoffs and the grand finals, they don't update the tourney client with those patch(es) unless they're bug or hotfixes.
Either that or Riot just doesn't patch the game after playoffs.

Either that or Riot just doesn't patch the game after playoffs. There's no way they are dumb enough to play the finals on a different patch. He was just worried about a major patch before it even starts, which isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Speaking of tournament setup, it completely boggles my mind that LPL had closed booths for Spring season, and then GOT RID OF THEM for Summer season.

I think Riot will be mindful of putting a patch too close to the Worlds, my concern is that they will vastly underestimate how much time is needed for a version of the game to "settle down".
For example, a month might seem enough to Riot, but I don't think that's anywhere close to enough.

I suspect that Lucian patch, which should be soon, will be the last patch before playoffs and I'm like 99% sure that Lucian will be disabled for teh duration of playoffs and championships.
If that doesn't happen I will be very disappointed.
Heck, I hope that Riot just doesn't update the tourney realm from the current patch, regardless of what comes out with the Lucian patch.

you know what would be sick? if the next patch is the replay patch, and any player can download a replay of any game from the s3 finals, that would be cool.

Honestly, they should hold off on patching the tournament version of the game already. One month from now to playoffs is too short for them to put in a new version and expect teams to have a reasonable understanding of how it plays.

I just want to be able to watch League on TV. I mean if competitive trick pool shots can make it to ESPN, why not this game?

My friend and I used to joke about how it took them forever to resolve the handshake issue. At first they had the losing team stay in the booths and have the winning team shake their hands, but it was really awkward because the booth was small and only open in one end so the last guy would have to just awkwardly wave at the farthest player.
Then they finally got smart after several weeks and made them do it outside the booth.
Then they got dumb and took out the booth. Now sometimes you get these really awkward handshakes where the guy is still sitting in the chair and Xiaoxiao tries to hug him from the back but it just looks like he's grabbing his boobs.

The last patch should be Lucien, which should be in the next 1-2 weeks, and then playoffs start. So no Lucien for playoffs, but re-worked Yi should be playable after whatever nerf they have in mind for that are implemented. A 1-2 week timeframe for the pros should be enough time, cause as far as I'm aware of, outside of Yi nothing else is over-powered right now in League that can't be answered with in-game items or proper team comp/smart engage/disengage work.
