The standard Theist Neo-Platonist response goes something along these lines: Goodness is not a separate quality that God must follow; it is part of who God is. In this view, God’s nature is the very definition of goodness. Everything that is good does so by sharing in or resembling God’s perfect nature. When God gives a command, it is inherently good because it comes from a being whose nature is goodness itself. This approach removes the need to ask whether something is good because God commands it or if God commands it because it is good. Instead, God’s commands are good by their very source.
