Team MRN should be talked about. Just so any future new LCS teams realize that Santa Monica is an expensive as fuck city, and if you don't have a healthy amount of sponsors, or if you're not in the top four of the standings continually, there is no reason for you to ever walk near or think about buying a gigantic beach house.

Even in the NBA or NFL, the major #1 rule for rookies, who are making MILLIONS A YEAR, is to not be stupid and buy a gigantic house. You're better off just living off the bare minimum and waiting until your next contract to get your dream house. We're talking about guys who are making around $30,000 when it comes to Team Marn. I don't see how anyone could think a beach house would be a smart idea.

Marn may have been scummy in Guilty Gear but I know he's very intelligent. I doubt he's retarded enough to pull something that can potentially get in legal trouble with Riot. In addition, Megazero really posts like he has zero sense of what goes on the real world. (Don't quote his Carnegie Melon to me, I get Harvard/Yale candidates at a job interview who I turn down regularly due to zero real world sense).

The fact that the players names was on the lease and not Marn's DAY ONE should've told them they needed to watch their shit when relegations was coming up. (aka advance notice of moving out, cleaning up the place as much as they can to challenge security deposit damages, etc).

BTW, I think VES really should play ball in terms of PR. VileRoze definitely seems like a guy who can easily gain popularity for his team. The guy comes across as very likable in all his interviews cause he seems like "every man". I used to dislike him cause I thought he looked like a troll but he def won me over with the way he interviews.

Oh, come off your high horse. I'm saying he's not dumb (which you basically called him) but I am also aware that it's probably his first time living in a place of his own, since he's probably in the dorms at CMU. You don't get that kind of know-how from your parents (such as cleaning a living space to the point where it looks like nobody has ever lived in it before) unless you moved around a lot growing up. Megazero's not an idiot, but he's also in a situation that is scary territory and it sounds like he's stressed out over it.

I dont know I learned these stuff from my parents. How old is he again?

IIRC he was 15 back in beta, the wonder kid and all that.

There's no such thing as sleep clause in vs AI in pokemon. I found EV training pretty strong, as I'm pretty sure none of the AI's pokemon have any EVs and only a few trainers get IVs. Which means you get a good advantage on them. My Butterfree was actually useful in my last attempt to rematch the Elite 4 in LeafGreen due to 97.5% accuracy sleep powder. I lost like 5 times to the Elite 4 in a row though due to underleveling until I gave up my no(limited) items/switch run and started switching.

Also there is no such thing as OHKO clause vs the AI. Which means you can get an Articuno or Poliwrath from gold and give them both mind reader and OHKO moves for 2 turn guaranteed OHKOs.

I don't think this is too reliable though since Articuno is 4x weak vs rock.
Also sleep can wear off on the next turn until Gen 5.
You are definitely better off using more reliable sweeping strategies like legendaries that fall in the category of useable in the battle tower/subway/tournament.
I also found Snorlax quite strong in the battle tower. I recommend one with rest, curse, body slam, and either sleep talk or earthquake. Chesto berry and leftovers both have their strengths here.
Also looking through a list of ubers in smogon might give you some good ideas. Eg. Venusaur with Chlorophyll, growth, solar beam, and Ninetails' dream world ability: Drought, can outspeed and ohko/thko just about anything.

To the above, I see how Whimiscott can be very strong at helping set up. Especially if it's also possible to get it to learn memento but I don't think it can.
How is Entrainment Durant worthwhile? I mean, what's the point of giving your opponent swarm as an ability?

Pretty sure he was joking. Gyrados has terrible SPAtk which matters in Gen IV and V. Giving him Blizzard, Hydro Pump, and Flamethrower is akin to giving Tryn a deathcap... wait.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Turns out, in the real world, being amicable and honest will take you a hell of a lot further, even if you appear kind of weird.

I can't say I blame MRN for their decision, though. There's a strong likelihood that most, if not all, of them will never have an opportunity to live in a beachfront property in Southern California ever again, so even if they encountered foreseeable financial issues, it's not like they're getting sued or are saddled with lots of debt as a result, and I think we'd all be lying if we said it wouldn't be damn cool to live there, even for 4 months. I'm 26 and I would advise 19 year old me to make the decision that they made.

i definitely don't have time to play competitively.

i haven't played since blue, where i captured all 150 pokemon and then saved my game and never touched it again. i only desire to have something to do on the ride to LCS and back, not to get too crazy (also i have to beat vileroze when we battle, but that shouldn't be a problem, when i last checked, he was only using his emboar. like, literally the only pokemon he used)

i want to make sure that my pokemon are the best mix of: cute, powerful, and having a diversity of moves, in that order. i'll take 6 middling pokemon as long as they're all cute as fuck. considering doing a full eevee team but iirc they take a long time to catch and get rolling. i also have a really weird neurosis where i like fully triple-evolved pokemon except in rare cases (snorlax, eevees, the pan/simi line, and darumaka CAUSE THAT GUY'S SO CUTE); i ALSO have a weird neurosis where i feel like it's a requirement to have a move of every type on my final team. so pokemon that can learn a variety of moves (i usually like 3 offensive, 1 defensive/utility, and there's 15 types right? so i can't afford to overlap any offensive move types if i have an HM slave) are also cool.

i know those are crazy requirements but i start to feel anxious when i play pokemon thinking "OH THERE COULD BE A BUG/STEEL POKEMON COMING UP AND I DON'T HAVE A FIRE MOVE, HOW CAN I POSSIBLY BEAT HIM" etc.

i'm also getting a weird feeling in my stomach thinking about not having a vaporeon on my team. hands down cutest eeveelution. maybe i'll restart so i can get vaporeon :x sorry m00nb34r, can't do heatran, too ugly and doesn't evolve = nonono

GRASS

anyway, how's this for a team then:
samurott - water, ice, normal moves
arcanine/simisear - fire, rock, ground moves
electavire - electric, fighting, normal moves
espeon - psychic, ghost, bug moves
hydreigon - dark, dragon, flying moves
bibarel - HM slave

AHHHHH IT HURTS ME that none of them can really learn a grass move. team won't work. gg.

don't judge me

Oh. A Cutemon team? I have just the thing for you.
  • Espeon lead with Dual Screens (Reflect and Light Screen) to just neuter all opposing damage (no one uses Brick Break anymore). Could also Calm Mind and Stored Power.
  • Cinccino cause it's so adorably cute and amazing and wow it's probably not that good but hey it's cute
  • Jolteon because every team needs at least two Eeveelutions
  • Victini because everyone knows the best offence is a good offence. Am I doing this right?
  • Shaymin because it's so adorable and has a unique signature move for extra style points
  • And finally Vaporean because having 50% of your team as Eeveelutions is cool. Plus it rounds out with a bulky water type.
(But in all seriousness that is not actually a good team.)

As for a real recommendation, If you're just going a whole load of powerful semi-sweepers then that sort of team should be ok. I would probably want to position it so that your Hydreigon is your wall breaker who just comes in and wrecks stuff. Give it Life Orb and it's awesome move pool (Draco Meteor/Fire Blast/Super Power/Dark Pulse/Earthquake/Dragon Pulse/Focus Blast) means it'll generally be able to choose something at least neutral damage if not super effective. The rest of the team can be semi-sweepers who can set up and sweep low hp stuff in a pinch, but their primary role is just to wear down your opponent's pokemons so Hydreigon can come in and just smash stuff to small pieces.

I personally thing Volcrona works much better than Arcanine or Simisear because it's type coverage is superior and it's a good secondary sweeper thanks to Quiver Dance. But I also really like Volcrona so ymmv. It can learn Giga Drain though the grass coverage can come from there.

This offends me on so many levels.

you just used a lot of words that i don't know the meaning of
dual screens, sweepers, wall breaker, etc etc etc. i'm really, really not looking to play competitively lol.

also that gyarados sounds so good. but then i'd have to restart so i didn't have to use my samurott. but if i restart and get pignite or snivy, then i want vaporeon instead of gyarados and that would defeat the point. RIP in peace

In the most basic terms:
  • Dual screen = The combo of Reflect and Light Screen. Reflect halfs the Physical damage to your team for 5 turns (8 if the Pokemon using the move is holding a Light Clay). Light Screen does the same but for Special moves. So if you have both, you basically take half damage from everything until the screens wear off. It gets the name Dual Screens because the attack animation is setting up a glass screen.
  • Sweeper = a Pokemon that comes in and proceeds to kill everything (aka sweeping away your opponent). Think of it like a carry, except it's already farmed 6 items. Often they will have stat-boosting moves so when they swap in and have a type advantage, they can get a free stat-boost when your opponent swaps their Pokemon out and then you hit back with a stat-boosted move for tons of damage.
  • Set-up Sweeper = Like a Sweeper expect the goal is to get this Pokemon into play, use several stat-boosting moves and then proceed to kill everything thanks to your extreme stats and powerful attacks. Think of it like if you could swap a Vayne into a teamfight except you could "stat-up" with 50 PDs. Yeah.
  • Wall Breaker = Sometimes teams will have very defensive Pokemon (aka tanks) and these are called walls because they're just designed to sit there and wall you. A Wall Breaker is an offensively geared Pokemon who never takes out the trash, pays rent late, looks like a chav, disrespects its elders and swears a lot. It could also be a Pokemon that has lots of attacking moves and has high attack stats and is designed to take on walls and tear them down through sheer power (so it won't stop to use stat boosting moves and instead just go all out with high power moves like Draco Meteor boosted by items like Choice Specs or Life Orb).

Even if you're not planning on playing competitively, it's good to know what kind of roles you want the Pokemon on your team to play!

also can someone tell me when it is best to evolve pokemon? as early or as late as possible? does this hold true with stone-evolving pokemon and trade-evolving pokemon as well?

Stone evo pokemon are usually best left until later. Check the prevolution list and see what they learn, the evolution likely doesn't learn it. Otherwise, just do whatever.

Generally you just evolve ASAP. Nintendo did a good thing since now Pokemon generally don't miss out on special moves if you evolve them too early but you get the better base stats from the evolution form.

You get a Durant with Traunt (Dream World Ability). So you give your opponent Truant. Since they can't do anything every odd turn you then swap in a set-up Sweeper with Protect. Use Protect every turn where they can hurt you, use a stat boosting move every other turn, and once you max out your stats you just proceed to OHKO everything.

Because the AI hates swapping Pokemon you can basically get infinite turns to set up anything you want this way.

EDIT: Ok no more Pokemon talk. If there's demand, we can set up a separate thread in the subforum for Pokemon talk. But enough for Pokemon talk in GD.

Moving the topic off Pokemon... (If there's demand, we can set up a separate thread in the subforum for Pokemon talk. But enough for Pokemon talk in GD.)

I think the MRN thing, regardless of whoever is right or wrong, serves as a good warning and lesson for future teams. There's a lot of things any team needs to consider. And while it's a lot to have so much responsibility and stuff thrust upon a bunch of teenagers who just play games well, it's something very important.

It's kind of reasons like this that make me thing the whole "no more than one team under the same brand" sort of thing that's kind of a bummer. I think some newer teams could get a lot of help from more experienced managers watching over them, as well as the whole scrim partner, analysis sharing and pooling of resources. (Just see things like the CJ and MVP sibings teams who train and get better together.)

Different scenario. Riot isn't cutting you a large check for you and four friends to relocate. They became popular overnight, thousands of people talking about them etc. Why not indulge in the rockstar life. If they would have managed to continue being able to play in the LCS none of this would even get discussed. Did they have fun, more than likely yes. Now the dream is over, the fair amount of money they had once now gone. Realization that they could have saved better sure. Everyone has that.

Every new team who qualifies for the LCS should be brought into a dark room and asked the following question:

"With the half year salaries and extra money we are giving you, what kind of living arrangement will you be looking for?"

A) Roomy, suburb house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. A little run down, but still nice
B) Two apartments next to each other. Smaller than a house, but utilities are much less and you'll still be right next to each other
C) A beach house in Santa Monica with four rooms, countless bathrooms, a view of the shore, and a pool for good measure

If any team picks C, they should be relegated immediately.

It's well written out response; really dumb to rent house near beach though.
Curse was the smartest; doing Las Vegas. Close enough flight time as so it wouldn't matter; and cheap as fuck rent for a mansion.

I don't think anyone in Curse actually enjoys living in Vegas. They literally spend 24 hours inside (aside from food runs).

I think the beachfront property is super overrated (ok to be fair I'm a bit biased from living within 30 minutes from growing up in Santa Cruz and getting really bored at the beach). like I've been living in Westwood area as a UCLA student and it's a super easy 20ish minute (if you're not dumb and leaving at 5pm) bus ride to santa monica while being substantially cheaper than beachfront, and I'm quite sure there are even cheaper places that are also closer to Riot and the beach.

BTW since pretty much in NA LCS is spending time at Riot are there any opportunities to go see them or something? It never really dawned on me how close I am to all these pro players D:

also I would love to have a pokemon thread. i used to play on shoddybattle in 4th gen and I want to get back into online play (especially since I'll be starting med school soon and am afraid to continue playing League once I start...) but I haven't paid any attention so expert advice would be most welcome

EDIT: Although I would definitely advise 19 year old me not to trash the house and be that guy.

I'm 21 and just recently applied to Riot. If I get hired and have to move to Santa Monica, I am going to find the shittiest, smallest studio apartment I can find.

Renting a beach house without any sponsors and living on Riot's money is fucking ridiculous.

Once/if/when you get hired, you should look into speaking with other Riot employees(smashgizmo maybe if you know him well enough). I believe Riot is very helpful to get living situations sorted out. I believe a lot of Riot employees live with fellow employees as well. It seems like a pretty tight group for the most part. At least, that's usually been the case for most of the people I've spoken with who have worked for Riot(not that I've spoken to that many, might be coincidence too!)

I approve of pokemon discussion I don't understand why people care about MRN, it's not like Marn is ever going to have another LCS/Challenger team so it really just does not matter.

That's what people said about Marn the first time. That team formed around 2 weeks before the qualifiers, and did well in the qualifiers. They went 2-0 in their group that included Azure Cats AND Cloud9. They didn't do so well in the upper brackets, but they were the last team to qualify by beating out both Meat Playground, and finally DnG(now essentially VES). So yeah, they didn't really have an easy road. It's part of the reason it SHOULD be talked about. Regardless of what the team/players are doing now, it's definitely news worthy due to how much of an underdog story they were. It's a shame they aren't around anymore, and part of it is due to mismanagement.

Marn's response. Haven't read it yet.

From a management standpoint, it's the best out of all the teams. Least expensive real estate and Riot covers all transportation. I can't imagine how much Curse saves compared to other teams.

I'm pretty sure even a lot of people who do lift roll their eyes a bit, or are completely befuddled when you really talk exercise science with some other people educated in the related fields. It's like how a doctor has to dumb down what they're saying at some point during a visit, I have to remember that not everyone has years of formal schooling on the subject matter and really just wants to know how to get swole.
How did the experience of working at Mr Burns' Nuclear Plant influence Homer's composition of the Iliad and Odyssey?

Curse is a well oiled machine, they do a lot of the right things. Even having their players swallow their pride and do cringe worthy HSN commercials.
