At this point anything that isn't a bruiser or assassin is good.

Sweeet
I already spent 6300 on Leona though, real hard to do it again for a support.

Pretty cool. I haven't even bought Lulu yet, and I've been deciding between her and support Zyra. Now they make it evens harders

Excited about new support but seriously, a mermaid? After a ninja? How much more cliche can they get. Next you're gonna tell me they make a zombie or another pirate.

We don't have a mermaid yet thou.. we've got freaky fish guy but that's really it. We could use another pirate imo..

Betting $10 she will be mid fotm and subsequently nerfed.

How it reads in her sneak peek, it looks like they DON'T want her to be played as a bot lane support.
As I’ve been hinting at for a little while now, the next champion is our new support character. While we’ll get to the details on her in the next few days, I wanted to pull back the curtain on what “support champion” means when we set out to create one.
First up, let’s discuss the differences between support characters, and the lane assignment of support – they overlap a lot, but they’re not the same:
Support characters are defined by being assisters and enablers for their allies – this is the core “support psychology” we want to achieve. Good examples of these characters are Janna, Lulu or Sona. Support as a lane role is any character that can thrive on less gold, and has a strong lane presence – either offensively or defensively. Characters from the previous definition often fit here, but other characters go here a lot. For example: Leona is a tank, but plays the support role in a team. Alistar is a little of both because he’s a great linebacker.
So, with that out of the way: when we talk about a support character (like Nami – the new one!) we mean the first definition. Zyra, while able to play the support role, is not a support champion by these definitions – she’s more like a mage with an off-spec.

I missed that on the quick first read, I think you have a point.

Oddly enough, I don't find "cliche" to be a bad thing. A cliche movie/game/book that is executed well is still highly enjoyable, and truly original concepts can be just as bland and uninteresting as anything else.

About time they released a new support, it's been so long since the last proper support was released.
I found their definition of zyra as a mage with an offspec a bit interesting, wonder if they are going to nerf her (and fiddles!) supporting capabilities in order for her not to keep overshadowing 'real' supports.

Your reading comprehension is totally backwards.

Read the second definition. That's the definition of a bot lane support.

It doesn't anywhere say that's not what they have in mind for Nami. All it says is they want Nami to be more about supplementing their ally (i.e. AD Carry) instead of forcing action on the other team. That's why they compare her to Janna/Sona/Lulu and probably Soraka.
EDIT: To clarify:
Zyra, while played as a support because of her poke, CC, and ability to be relevant without gold, doesn't do much "supporting" of the AD Carry.
Nami is designed with supporting the carry in mind, not damage and CC.

I thought so too, then I actually read. Joke's on you. To clarify: we call everything that lanes with the ADC support, while Riot has classes of some sort in mind when releasing a champ. Apparently, Nami is part of the support class, regardless of where she ends up laning, much as Leona will always be a Tank to Riot no matter what.

They are attempting to create a support that will NOT got bot lane, something like Zilean but even more focused on the supporting.
