I think its a shit item if you are going full tank or glass cannon.

Imo the real deterrent for those items is that the big items are still extremely efficient and delaying those big items just hurts you too much. However, smaller items like Wriggle's and Wit's End are efficient enough that they are sometimes worth the delay on your big items.

Hexdrinker is just a nice way to get at good AD ratios and spec vs. casters at the same time. The only people who need this are certain bruisers, so it's a niche item for them, but it's a good one. Better than Wit's End if you have good incentives to build AD.

If you go full ad ratios IMO its just better to get a bruta and thirsters, then just grab something like a GA if you want MR and a lifesaving passive. If you want full tank you have much better options for mr. I only get a drinker if I am staying on mid tier items.

If you're going for that kind of an advantage, like for instance a haunting guise + sorc boot cheese, then you should probably extend that advantage further with a blue elixir. The efficiency of big-items goes straight out the window if the mid-tier items are getting you kill or towers, but being half-assed about getting advantage through mid-tier item advantage can really cost you. To be honest going for mid tier items on a AP hero is usually simply buying 3 d-rings. Nearly no one has 50 MR anyways and haunting guise tends to leave you really hurting for mana in lane while 3 drings give you almost as much damage, more health, *and* mana sustain to push around your opponent more. I suppose you could buy 3 drings and *then* HG but IMO that feels a lot like going all-in after your early push doesn't work.

That's why I've always assumed Haunting Guise was to give non-mana casters (vlad, rumble, kennen) more mid-game item options. I still never buy it, though.

The other issue is that Riot seems to dislike champion designs that complement these midgame items. Midgame-centric items are good on midgame-centric champions, but every time there's a champion that Riot feels is too strong early-midgame and drops off lategame, they always screw with the power curve of the champion to make them fit that same semi-carry power curve that 90% of champions in this game have.

And my team wouldn't ward for me to tele, so oh well. We lost dragon twice? Try warding next time. Coulda tele'd to minions/tower, but Irelia should be in the middle of a fight from the time it starts. People so dumb. =\
