man I am finding all kinds of junglers I previously used defensive or utility setups on are suddenly three times better with AS reds and 21/0/9. Alistar and rammus particularly

What's the amateur competitive scene like in LoL right now? Coming up on 30 and haven't really followed the scene all that much outside of some solo mid streams. would be awesome to practice and get into some scrims/small for fun tournies down the road a bit when my skills allow it.

Much of an amateur scene right now or is it mostly large tournaments that dominate the community?

*edit* also I have heard from some friends and on bnet forums that there is a huge gap between invite teams and the rest of the community (i.e lack of an open bracket style entry level)

Maybe on US. On EU there is no such thing as huge gap.

I.E. fnatic was defeated by SK which was defeated by Empire which was defeated by MYM which was defeated by our guys from TL. (all in a week period)
Does that mean TL.EU is as strong as fnatic or SK? :D
Nah. last Go4LoL TL was defeated by some unknown low tier scrubs.

That's more a reaffirmation of why Bo1 is a bad format than anything.

I was less referring to a skill gap and more the ability for new players/teams to emerge and receive recognition.

Not that it will likely effect me any time soon I am really just curious for curiosity's sake.

Other option is to have every match take 2.5 to 3 hours zzz

No way to finish a tourney in a day with that ruleset.

The ability for new teams to enter competitive events is fine IMO. Hell, CRS started as just being UNR, and gained recognition by winning Go4LoLs and putting up strong ESL Premier League performances.

Events like IPL and MLG have been invite-only because the organizations involved are just testing the water with regard to competitive LoL. It's not likely to remain that way.

So you figure LoL is going to have a breakout with these events and become a mainstay in its own right? I was excited to see it at MLG/IPL would love to see more of it/more teams.

It depends how satisfied the TOs are with the events and how much they're willing to invest in the future.

What people also forget is that if everyone actually focusses the tank he'll drop dead and the fight will be 4v5 with your tanky still alive. People always get angry when you try to pick off something tanky when it's all alone, but this often wins you the fight, as long as you don't focus the tanky when more important targets are vulnerable.

That's definitely true but in some situations you blow your cooldowns on that lone tank then the enemy uses something like shurelya's, flash ulting where it's an AoE disable, etc to catch up with the tank and initiate when your cooldown's are down. Or someone gets slightly out of position trying to get the last few hits on the tank to kill him and he gets away with no health, then they get instagibbed in return. It's those situations I see the most where people are "herp derp don't focus the tank!"

So what is the correct play when an enemy tanky initiator is out of position? Is it worth a Morgana QW, a Brand EQ, a Zilean slow? This is assuming that he is going to initiate and that a real teamfight will begin in the next 3 seconds. Should the AP just save his skills even if he could disable the tank and have the team burst it down in 2 seconds, but wasting most cooldowns (but hopefully no ults) in the process?

That depends on the how out of position he is, and whether those spells will be off CD again by the time they're needed, and if the tank is actually going to die. Small-medium CDs are generally gonna be fine if you're fighting a 5v4 subsequently, and even one of your long CDs can be worth it if he *actually dies*.

The worst possible scenario (and one that unfortunately is gonna happen a lot on solo queue) is where half the team blows their CDs, and half don't, so you're missing important spells AND the tank isn't out of the fight.

I hate this so much, especially when they just dont do anything because OMG DONT FOCUS THE TANK or they run past him and end up in a 1v4 and die because they aren't a tank themselves.

That goes without saying but I'm asking as to whether it is worth blowing disables on an initiator and having the team follow up with spells to burst him down. I guess it all depends on the context and actually, I think that most cases of "don't focus the tank" whining just comes down to lack of communication between solo Q players rather than the supposed fact that bursting a tank down is bad 100% of the time.

In LoL, Casters have scaling damage, cheap access to mana (when spells are very low mana as it is) and just in case that wasn't enough they boosted passive mana regen so people could have more fun.

This is a good thing. Gameplay is very stale when you can rarely use spells or constantly run out of mana.

The game should be designed so you have to make choices about when you use your mana, if you are spamming spells in lane then go for a fight it makes sense you shouldn't have full mana. There's a huge difference in being able to rarely use spells and having to actually thinking about your mana usage. Blue buff pretty clearly illustrates crappy design imo, mid lane starts off as a proper lane but then becomes a lane where both champs instantly jib their creep wave this infinite mana over and over again.

My main problem with ap casters apart from retarded blue buff is that they all do the same thing basically, they just blow up people in fights and spam their cooldowns. It would be great to see more champs like janna designed and ones that actually made sense to be go mid as the carry. Ofc, this would require pretty big changes to the whole game.
