The problem is that I could get an Uigeadail and a Corryvreckan for the same price as the Kildalton - with some money left over. In that regard the Kildaton wasn't worth the money, even if it's a nice whisky in itself.

Ever since, I’ve been quite hooked, and I’ve been picking up a bottle every couple of weeks (scotches, bourbons, Canadian ryes, going to pick up some Irish ones soon, maybe Japanese if I can find them). I decided to get some cheap bottles too, to compare young to old, bad to good, peaty and not peaty, etc. But now I’m no longer interested in cheap bottles (nor in stupidly expensive ones), and I’m looking to expand my ephemeral collection of experiences with nice whiskeys, for now preferably between the prices of $40 to $150. I’m thinking of picking up bottles from BenRiach, Glenfarclas, Caol Ila, Bowmore, GlenDronach, Glenfiddich and a few more over the next months or years. I’m trying to get a sense of the differences between whiskies. I put a list of my inventory at the bottom of this post, so what do you guys think I should pick up next (that’s fairly widely available so I can get it in Canada). Is there a “type” of whisky I haven’t tried, something that would bring something new to the table? Ardbeg or Laphroaig perhaps, to try something heavily smoked? What would be the opposite of this? Cheers! ![]() So far I own: Scotch: Lagavulin 16 (unopened), Glenlivet Nadurra 16 (unopened), Glenlivet 12, Té Bheag (blend), McClellands Islay (No age statement, pretty peatey), Johnnie Walker Red Label (Truly a foul, foul scotch. 0/10) Ryes: Crown Royal, Wiser’s Deluxe and Small Batch, Canadian Club, Seagram’s VO. Nothing fancy. ‘Merica: JD’s Gentleman Jack (which is damn good for the price, and I hate No7), Wild Turkey 81 (great for $30 here, I find it much better than any of my ryes, works decently neat)

Elijah Craig 12 year is pretty often recommended in this thread and one of my personal favorites. It's a great bourbon for a great price ~$30. I find it pretty different from Wild Turkey, although I've only had the 101.

Light and delicate but still very distinctive.

To that end, it's pretty good if a little pricey. The "better" whiskeys in that family aren't bad at all, even if they're not quite as good as all the hype might suggest. And I would certainly suggest to start on bourbons. As far as America's offerings, there's much more to our bourbons than our whisky like Jack Daniels, IMO. Elijah Craig is a solid starting point. Knob Creek is pretty good, and I personally really enjoy Bulleit - just make sure you pick up their bourbon (orange label) and not their rye (green label).

Yeah I know that JW Red is for mixing but then again Crown Royal is said to be for mixing (because it's not too good) but you can drink it neat or with a drop of water and it's not unpleasant. JW Red is unpleasant. In fact, I hate it mixed also, unless it's like 5 parts of coke and 1 part of JW Red and then it's okay. Anything more and it ruins a perfectly good glass of coke. And as you say, it's fairly expensive to that end, especially here. So I'd rather take better, cheaper ryes for mixing. (But I don't really mix...) Thanks for your suggestions, the Knob Creek 9yr is available here though a bit pricey. The Bulleit is not unreasonably priced here: http://www.saq.com/page/en/saqcom/whiskey-americain/bulleit-frontier-bourbon/11155956 This is the one you think I should get? Cheers!
