Looks like it needs work, but it also looks functional, which is more than can be said for a certain other mmo that came out mid last year (coughfinalfantasycoughcough). Worth keeping an eye on, as it gives a different feel than many of the others out there... though that may be largely due to the Star Wars IP more than anything else.

What I meant was that there is a high probability that the game is designed to keep you busy as long as possible. I can handle the classical RPG gaming experience stretching (questst that are all over the place etc) but the MMO strechting thing has a whole different outcome in the gameplay. At least that is the case for EVE, WOW, LOTRO. If they manage to make a MMO with a singleplayer RPG feel in multiplayer mode I would be very impressed.

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/2011/04/29/star-wars-the-old-republic-preview/2 it’s one of the most boring titles we’ve ever had to endure. It’s plain and staid and deathly dull. It’s both exactly the same as every other MMO we've played, but at the same time so much worse Throughout 48 hours-worth of play we didn’t see a single interesting or believably animated character; merely sock puppets with semi-decent voice acting. The plotlines that we saw wouldn’t have been gripping even if they had been populated with Oscar-winning actors Even fierce combat feels painfully static and uninvolving We found ourselves wading through an almost obscene amount of combat too, usually against the type of wild beasties and bandits that typify every RPG, ever – but in greater quantity and in an area which felt far smaller. In some cases we’d clear out an area, walk into the next room, turn back and face the exact same enemies we’d killed only moments before. Once or twice we even saw foes respawning over their own corpses as conversations distracted us – very, very anti-fun. What’s most disappointing of all is how empty and lacking in personality the worlds of The Old Republic felt I feel a major flop incoming.

I'd be curious to see how that guy rated games like mass effect and dragon age. Because there is a large possiblity he is just one of the many bioware haters out there. That said, I tend to agree. There is so much hype surrounding this game, and I so desperatly want it to be good. But in reality, from what Ive looked at, its going to suck, and suck pretty bad. It will have a million subscribers like warhammer did, and they will be gone in the first month. While warhammers was because of lag, poor coding, and bugs, this one I think will flop from mediocre game design.

Coming from SWG many many years ago, before it turned to garbage, that game was pretty enjoyable, player driven economy, you had a feeling you were actually affecting things (like player run cities, specialized vendors/characters). I'll probably give it a try but with severely lowered expectations. How long until people are tired of WoW clones and uninspired level based rpgs? Can we go back to UO, SWG, heck I'd settle for Conan or Dark Age

Knight of the Old Republic was great fun, but would you grind your way around those bland worlds for a hundred hours in an MMO format? No. It'd be excruciatingly dull. But I do love Star Wars, and have enjoyed BioWare games in the past, so hopefully they'll surprise me and make a really good game here. But my guess is that the hype will dwindle and people will slowly become bored with it, and they'll lose subs after the first few months. Happens to pretty much every MMO out there. Also, the Star Wars fan in me is actually kind of bothered by some things in this game. Like Jedi running around in massive sets of cartoon armor, for instance.

That's something game studio's are either unable to achieve or unwilling, which is unfortunate. I personally believe allowing for MMO's to be mostly player driven would create a greater sense of immersion and in my opinion immersion is the missing link for this genre.

Their games are usually highly dependent on story-elements to make up for otherwise bland designs. They're enjoyable to play through, but they offer no "replayability" afterwards. . I don't know about you, but Mass Effect gave me the most enjoyable 3rd person shooter experiences I've ever had. It was nothing fancy, sure, but it was just so streamlined and well designed... just all around fun.

They're just very, very far from offering the type of gameplay that suits a multiplayer game, is the point I was mostly trying to make.

The other problem is that new games tend to get hyped up too much, to the point where you are expecting it to be the cure for cancer or something, and it never lives up to those standard, because MMOs can only raise the bar so much, and it's a genre that is hard to make a game different enough to where it isn't just the same. I guess what I'm getting at, is that people(in my head) are always looking for a new game, one that is new and refreshing from the game they were playing before. New MMOs don't seem to be that. They just seem like a recycled idea with new environments depending on the company that makes them. SWTOR doesn't seem much different to me.

I just started following this game. Honestly, the thing that bothers me the most is the graphics. If I'm going to be spending that much time closely focused on characters talking and interacting with each other because of the game's story-heavy nature, I would prefer them to look sharp and realistic, not cartoony... I do think the game will actually be fun to play though. The bit.tech guy sounds to me like his problems are with the entire mmo genre, not just swtor in particular, and that seems to be where a good portion of his negativity is coming from. You could rebut his arguments by saying that the vast number of other previews are overwhelmingly positive, but that argument doesn't hold a lot of weight because they're all from fansites who desperately want the game to be good (justifying the amount of time they spent following it). I'll give it a shot if I have time. So, if the release date is in the summer, then definitely. If it's not released till late fall/winter, then I won't because I won't have time. A lot of people are insinuating that ME3 will come out in October, so for Bioware to avoid cannibalization (assuming that's accurate), they would have to release the game in the summer or December to still keep with their "before 2012" promise. EDIT: Bioware just announced that the ME3 release is pushed back until 2012. This would seem to free up the fourth quarter for EA so they could wait to release SWTOR in the winter. However, because Battlefield 3 is scheduled for a Q4 release too, EA might still have incentive to get SWTOR out before that (in late summer or early fall) so as to avoid competing with B3. That would also give EA a marquee release for each of the final three quarters of its fiscal year, which ends in April 2012 (SWTOR-Q3, B3-Q4, ME3-Q1).

That will make up most of the fanbase, while people looking for an innovative mmo will go to Guild Wars 2 or TERA. Initially I figured I'd try it out for a while to check out the stories, but if this blandness doesn't get fixed I don't have much motivation to bother.
