I hope they change it till release, if they don´t I will use cheats to avoid this annoying little minigame which surves no purpose at all. It doesn´t take skill and just trains you to reload if you got unlucky. DX was never about luck, so why add something like this now..

It's fucking glorious and the first hacking mini-game or hacking-esque mini-game I have enjoyed in forever. It's fast paced, it's difficult on higher difficulties and actually requires some planning and thinking. Do you spend time buffering your defense or go for a bum rush? Do you try to take another node to misdirect the tracer, either hitting or missing? And if you are constantly quicksaving + quickloading to make sure you never mess up, you won't enjoy any game anyways.

Only thing luck based in the minigame is the detection % on nodes, which you can see beforehand, so you need to take a calculated risk, and besides that (at least on the middle difficulty) you can usually win without getting a node undetected and without using any software. If you have the forethought to think ahead and plan, aka SKILL.

Fortifying a node makes the computer take longer to capture that node, slowing him down from reaching you. When/If he reaches you, you're locked out. The other thing is when you first start, nodes have a detection % chance on them, this is basically the chance that the computer will start the race, so if you're careful, and a bit lucky at lower levels, you can get a headstart on the computer. Other things like the Stop worm stun the computer, gives you 5 seconds or such of free time. There's a few other things, but the help thing while hacking explains them well.

If you fail a hack attempt, the next time you do try, the whole setup of the minigame will be different, no? Amirite or? That's make the system many-fold better, the random element

And if you are constantly quicksaving + quickloading to make sure you never mess up, you won't enjoy any game anyways. I am pretty sure I am not the first person to critize the mini-game. It isn´t really fast paced and it isn´t really difficult. If you call this "planning and thinking"..well.. Of course I spend putting up defenses when necessary, but the fact that luck is involved is just annoying. You can get through many minigames completely undetected while getting most if not all rewards. But at the very same time that very same minigame can fail at the very first point because you didn´t "roll" good. If there is no hurry (meaning no guard/alarm around) you can´t fail. Yes, you can´t fail, thus making the minigame completely pointless. In cases where it actually matters (a guard or alarm is around) the only way to be sure to capture is to use tools like nukes because you could always "roll" bad and get detected at the first node. In those cases no amount of your called "skill" would help you. You could abort and retry in a non-critical situation (which is practically like reloading) or face the consequences (= get detect/having to fight), but most people wouldn´t do such a thing. I wouldn´t mind if it would actually be my fault, but since I lose because I had bad luck it obviously bothers me , because the outcome should be determined by skill and not by luck. Also, you only see the detection chance due to the implant upgrade (which is default unlocked in the beta, but not in the full version). Regardless, like I said, the minigame is just unnecessary. It isn´t difficult and you can influence the outcome only to a certain degree and sometimes not at all, because you can auto-lose at the very first node without making any sort of decission. It is just bad design and I really hope they change it.

They won't remove it. It has captured the heart of many a person. I thought it was a bad idea before I tried it out

Thankfully from what i've seen so far they are doing their best to honour everything that made the first game truely great. I am trying to curb my enthusiam however when i heard the Unatco theme was in the game my inner fanboy squeed like a teenage prom queen.

I'd love to hear them talk about it and would rather not have to wade through several hours of E3 bombcasts =)
