best use for a treeman most of the time: just stand in the way.
Best use for treemen is not taking them at all. Wood Elves along with Goblins and Skaven are probably the best races overall since mobility and dexterity is king in this game, allowing you to score insanely fast and easy. Sure, you won't be worth a dime in combat but if you focus on combat you've pretty much lost already.
You haven't played this game in a while, have you? Where'd you get the idea that Goblins out of all races are good? They're a joke team. It even says so in the manual. You have a point with Wood Elves and Skaven. However, in both scheduled and permanent leagues bash/running teams (teams that focus on the combat and usually aim to win 2-1) are doing very well and in fact are the vast majority. That's not to say mobile teams aren't good, mind you.
Regarding the treeman question:
I'm no expert on wood elves but I've heard very varying opinions on the tree. He helps a lot on your line of scrimmage. On defense if you can tie up one or more of the opposing cagers with him then that increases your chance of retrieving the ball notably.
I suggest you also read this guide: http://www.plasmoids.dk/bbowl/playbooks/Woodelf2.pdf Most of that playbook applies to all elf teams (and to a degree skaven) so it should be a pretty good read for anyone getting into the game.
Just started playing last night after literally years of wanting to buy the board game.
I used to play with a small group of friends, but with just the core book (rather than the living rulebook).
It later turned out that one of them picked up the Chaos Edition during a Steam sale, so now I have someone to play with and I'm hoping it all goes well. I used to have a High Elf team, but I'm consideing playing some Wood Elf now. I love mobile teams, rather than bludgeoning

Exactly.... If the other team receives, they have 4 free shots on your players. A treeman takes one of those shots away.
ALSO... a treeman with GRAB saves you on a blitz on your one turn TD attempt.
You can use the tree to bring a defender behind the LOS. you can then chain push that defender into your other players so you can push your catcher up in range to score!
The TGS Bloodbowl cup is finally getting started! Totalbiscuit has posted an announcement video on youtube:
Today he followed it up with an analysis featuring cknoor, who has done a shitload of BB videos (and pretty much the only ones with english commentary) already:
Although I don't expect very refined play from these events I'm certain they'll turn out to be a lot of fun and more importantly will bring many players to this awesome game.
At this point, i am basically waiting for some sort of daily deal for this game to get it cheap. I don't really intend to play any multiplayer, though. But if someone sees a good deal somewhere it would be nice if you could tell me (Please keep in mind that i am in germany and don't have a credit card which restricts where i can buy games)
haha, I just played a game on fumbbl and managed to win 2:0 over a goblin team with my night elves despite one of my linemen dying and my witch breaking her back... :D
For those who don't know (and don't care too much about the fancy graphics of Cyanide), there is FUMBBL, which has many leagues / different divisions. It uses a java client, which looks like this: It's free, apparently has a better rules implementation (such as magic cards) and a very decent community. I don't wanna hijack this thread, but as it's the only active BB topic, I thought I'd let you know. If you wanna try it out, add me (nick: kutte).
I just picked up a copy as well and can say that the game is totally worth it, particularly at the lower price point. This game satisfies so many little niches for me, from the sports sim, the tactical war game, and splash in some TCG elements (when the players develop and your team/deck gets stronger). There are obvious flaws in the interface, but the gameplay is engaging, deep and that good type of frustrating (that same type that comes from losing to Masters leaguer as a lowly Diamond). Then again, as a DnDer I mind shitty dice rolls less than the average person :-).
Elf BS is still infuriating. A guy runs through all of my frontline (in and out of at least 3 tackle zones), throws the ball across half the map to a guy also tagged by two of my guys, who then proceeds to run past all of them and score AAARGHHHH. But luckily after a few more rounds all of his fucking team lay in the casualty box. Fucking elves. But in this game you can punch them. Any game that features punching annoying elves is a good one.
Different question: When do i get that money from my sponsors contract? I now finished a whole season with all objectives i had taken at the start (except for "increase team value" which always increased with my team value making it impossible to achieve), and at no point did i get that sponsor money. I am now in the next season, and not only did i not get my sponsors money, apparently someone also stole all of my teams money because i am now at 0, and i had money before. Can someone explain how that works?

To be honest I think the most irritating thing about blood bowl is the people who play without finesse. When they have the ball they just circle the guy with 9 players. They usually play dwarf or some other lame team like that.
If I lose to elfs at least they had to think it through.
