as bad as the nets move was, atlanta moved marvin williams and joe johnson for a bunch if talent + devin harris. easily the best moves of a gm so far.

More importantly, it was a bunch of terrible contracts for a bunch of expiring ones. I mean, the Hawks probably won't be a playoff team anymore but ATL has to be overjoyed.

They'll have a ton of cap space and wont be second round fodder anymore. Maybe they get CP3 or Dwight next year.

Does anyone actually approve of the JJ deal (apart from Hawks fans!)?! It's mind boggling anyone would want to go near that JJ albatross of a contract.

And yeah, Nets would need a massive S&T now if they wanted to get Dwight. Dallas might have to wait until next year if they want to get Deron too.

Talent is debateable, but the expirings will be a huge asset for them.

If the Mavs ended up signing D-Will and Dwight...lmao. I swear to god Billy King would have to be fired right?

I don't think that any basketball fan thinks JJ deserves to be paid $25M at ANY point in his career, let alone when he's 35 years old.

Orlando would have to accept a package of Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, MarShon Brooks and multiple future first-round draft picks, and the Howard deal would take the form of a massive sign-and-trade.

http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2012/07/02/nets-looking-at-big-three-of-d-will-dwight-and-joe-johnson/

That is almost physically impossible. JJ/dwight are owed just under 20 mill each next season. No doubt they're looking at paying dwill the max salary (most likely) of 17.5 mill (assuming the cap stays roughly the same). That literally makes up 100% of the salary cap on 3 players lol.

And more than that, they only have 4-5 players signed after all of the trades go through (assuming they land both dwight/jj). So they will need to fill their roster before re-signing dwill (and then sign him after using his bird rights) to get above the salary cap. They'll end up being at least 7-10 mill above the salary cap assuming they sign complete scrubs to fill the remaining roster slots. More than likely they're looking at signing a bunch of guys with only a few years experience for relatively cheap (< 1 million).

In comparison, Miami's big 3 command 15 million their first season (each). And get a steady raise each year after. The net wills be paying 58 mill to their big 3 and each will also get a steady raise each year (presumably, I guess that isn't a necessity).

When the new luxury tax rules kick in, the Nets are going to be being like 50 million dollars in luxury tax lol (very very very rough estimate).

If the Magic were to do that the new GM would need to be fired. It's silly, wishful thinking by the Nets.

Doubt it. He must be getting the go ahead.

Also, some conflicting reports on the JJ trade. Some outlets are still reporting that it is contingent on dwill agreeing to resign with the Nets. To be honest, I don't think there is any chance in hell the Nets go through with the trade without a verbal commitment from dwill. They either already have something from dwill or they won't pull the trigger until they do.

they got a shooter a defender and two quality back up pgs, its not overwhelming talent, but they were looking to shed contracts so any talent is worth it.

Let's not kid ourselves here, they'd probably have preferred not getting talent so they could be guaranteed a high lottery pick to go along with that cap space. :p

If the Nets did what Sheridan is proposing they would be a first round casualty. A core of Howard-Williams-Johnson would get absolutely crushed unless they found some amazing role players.

I doubt they will bottom out unless smith walks, teague, smith and horford are at least par with the east 8 seed.

hell i might visit family in the area to see a game or two, i haven't seen nash live before, might be cool. Besides boston fans are annoying at times
Also off topic, watching d league. games is kind of cool, nice to see players who haven't been jaded by 7 or 8 figures per year play ball, i go to more red claw games than celtic games at this point (cheaper as well)

Yeah it'd depend on the players they could surround them with, but they'd still be better than first round fodder IMO. With Dwight in the middle they'll be a solid defensive team and their offense would be pretty sick.

It's just that they'd be spending their whole cap on three players... So they're either going to take a lot of lux tax or they're gonna have really crappy role players. Any core of Deron/Howard is going to be strong.

Depending on moves in the East before the season starts, I'd only have Miami and Boston ahead of them as clear favourites (this is very contingent on moves teams make... Like Indy with Hibbert and Gordon, Philly, Knicks). With Rose out of the picture I think Miami and Boston are a long way ahead of the teams in the East. I can see the Nets being just as competitive as the Knicks, Philly, Hawks, Magic, Bucks, Wiz, Cavs, Raps. East is still very weak so if the Nets could actually get that core together they'd be one of the stronger teams.

Serious, I know Ace doesn't like Dwight very much but that team would get to the second round with slightly above replacement players at 6-12 and slightly below average players at 4 and 5. After that? Probably not.

Orlando struggled with the terrible Hawks. Joe Johnson really, really isn't All-Star level. They'd need to amass a major win record to avoid Indy-Mia-Boston or even Philly. They need to be a 4 seed in order to reach the second round. None of those guys are great 2-way players. They would get absolutely fucking mauled.

When I heard about the JJ trade, I thought that it might be an indication that the Nets have either given up on either Deron or Dwight for some reason, such as Deron indicating he's going to DAL or ORL refusing to trade Dwight there b/c of a lack of assets. It'd still be a terrible trade since JJ is the worst type of player under the new CBA, i.e. huge contract that eats up most of your cap while not providing anywhere close to the production to make up for it, but at least it would follow some sort of rationale.

The rumored plan to get Deron, JJ and Dwight on the Nets sounds like a ridiculous gamble for the reasons already stated by others. It'd basically be a get-your-big-3-and-figure-out-the-rest-later all-in type of strategy, in which its success would depend on so much luck/chance in finding FAs. Briefly glancing at that wonderful, time-consuming FA list on the first page (yes, that's a self-pat on the back) and a few other sources, they could maybe get a roster something like:

PG: Deron, Delonte/Baron/Arenas
SG: JJ, Anthony Parker/Redd
SF: Gerald Green/Josh Howard/T-Mac/Moon
PF: Sheldon Williams/Amundson/Brian Cook/Jared Jeffries
C: D12, Thabeet/Haddadi/Fesenko

Yeah... not looking pretty.
