I actually dont see them having the cap space to sign ilyasova once they get Deron/JJ and resign Lopez. Lopez i definitely not gonna be theirs for the 4.1 mil qualifying offer, some other team is definitely gonna offer more than that. I'd project him to earn around 8 million next year conservatively. Then they have the 20 million of JJ, 10 million of Wallace, and the 15-16 million of Deron. That leaves them with around 6 million in cap space. With the amount of teams interested in ilyasova, 6 mil isnt gonna be enough to get him. Theyre definitely out of the running for Dwight as well.
Also I dont think a core of Deron/JJ/Wallace/Lopez will be able to contest for the championship at all. They'll probably get like a 4th seed, beat the knicks in 6, and lose to Ind/Mia/Bos in the semis, or the bulls if they managed to get to the playoffs without rose, and he comes back as healthy as before..
Yeah I guess it depends on what Lopez gets offered above his QO this year. But he's as of yet slated in for only 4 mill.
Deron would start at $17.5 next year I think for his max. So:
Deron 17.5 JJ 20 Wallace 10 Ilyasova 8 Lopez 4
That's 59.5 mill for next season. They wouldn need to massage the roster in future years, but that would be a good starting team for them in Brooklyn next year.
Who's available? Who can they realistically sign to put them over Miami, which is the benchmark? I'd wager there isn't enough talent realistically available. You'd need a very good big who can pressure guys like LBJ and Wade who attack the basket so well (ala Chandler in '11). You'd need a very good wing defender who can give a guy like LeBron problems (Iggy, Moute, Marion type). And then you'd need an elite scorer good enough to score against a very good Miami D (Dirk!).
I'd argue Deron and Howard can fit two of those roles very well. But it's why the JJ signing is dumb. JJ isn't a bad player, but he's just on way too much money. They'd be better just keeping cap space for Howard next year and rolling with Deron/Wallace/whatever. Sign Howard next year and you have an elite big man, elite scorer/PG and very good wing defender in Wallace. Plus you'd have way more cap flexibility to sign some good role players. I think that contends with a team like Miami a lot better. I also think it's some the Nets could realistically pull off. They just need a bit more patience.
I agree, that team is much better to against Miami and you go find your role players with the extra money. Get a back up PG and a ball handling wing and go nuts.

Get rid of Lopez... He's a liability on any team that's serious. Ilyasova would be a much more valuable asset as a stretch 4 and saves them money (and he can defend). The biggest problem would be getting D12. They'd either have to wait it out until FA or hope Orlando would take a package of expirings (and maybe BL?). Orlando's screwed either way so they may as well clear cap room and blow up the team for the FA class of 2013 which looks pretty sweet.
And yeah, JJ was good on those Phoenix teams of old, but that's his ceiling: third or fourth wheel @ $10 mill.

I think Brooklyn just signed its death warrant for the next 4 years by trading for JJ, no other team will want to touch his contract (4 years, 25 mil on the 4th year? for JJ? jeez), and it wouldnt surprise me if the hawks get the better of this deal by clearing cap space and signing someone like D12 or CP3 next season.. Nets are gonna kick themselves for this, this offseason had so much potential for them.
Edit: unless of course the magic are willing to take wallace and lopez plus draft picks.. Magic should just trade bynum + extras for howard, if the lakers ever offer this, it'll be their best bet in the long run. I'm calling Howard to the mavs though... '

I think baseball has shown in recent years that spending big money upfront with a new stadium is the way to go. I imagine its much the same in the NBA. So maybe he is following a model that works in other professional sports.
The comparison to somewhere between Ryan Anderson and Channing Frye make him sound like a good fit next to someone like Dwight. The fact that they're apparently going to be signing him to a 3-year $15.675M contract makes their cap situation even more precarious under the hypothetical Deron-JJ-D12 big 3 team.

Kinda torn about this. As unlikable as D12 is, I would prefer to see this team win over the Heat in the East. Also, I would relish seeing the Knicks and their overrated "stars" play second fiddle in NYC. However, I'm not too keen on giving Jay-Z the satisfaction of seeing "his team" thrive.
