Never take Euroleague "stars" seriously until they play in the NBA. Euroleague is literally little league compared to the NBA.

Anthony Parker won 2 MVPs over there.

The comparison to somewhere between Ryan Anderson and Channing Frye make him sound like a good fit next to someone like Dwight. The fact that they're apparently going to be signing him to a 3-year $15.675M contract makes their cap situation even more precarious under the hypothetical Deron-JJ-D12 big 3 team.

Deron $19M
JJ $19.75M
D12 $19M
Mirza $5

Total: $62.75M

Edit: Oops, forgot to break up the contract into each year. Still not a lot of money left to fill out a lot of roster spots.

+10 Mil to Wallace. I really think people are going to be surprised when this team gets rocked.

I'm pretty sure they have allens birds rights which means they can go over the cap to retain him, also terry is a combo guard, who would be utilized at the 1 and 2. it just means the celts are prepared even if he leaves, they aren't done this offseason that's for sure.

just read the details, they use their mle to get him, which means there is still PLENTY of cap space to go around.

Well I wouldn't past Billy King to pull a move like that so I guess it's possible. Still don't see Orlando taking a bunch of the Nets' crap just for this. I think the Nets would have to take Hedo in a deal which makes this even crazier.

I seriously don't see this happening and if it does I still think it's going to be a monumental disaster. Even in the dream land scenario of D-Will, JJ, Crash, random russian guy, and Dwight Howard I think they would get absolutely mauled in the Eastern Conference. I think Boston and Indy as currently construced would devastate this team in 5 games if they got lucky.

Hearing about a potential MWP and Bynum for D12 trade. Was thinking about how it might turn out if it did happen...

PG: Blake ($4M); Morris ($0.9M)
SG: Kobe ($27.8M); Goudelock ($0.7M)
SF: Ebanks ($1M); Eyenga ($1.1M)
PF: Gasol ($19M); McRoberts ($3.1M)
C: D12 ($19M); Hill ($3.6M)

Total: $80.2M for 10 players

I wonder how much the Buss family is willing to pay in luxury tax, particularly with the revenue sharing that's going to eat into everything they make. It's a bit concerning because both Ebanks and Hill are apparently drawing interest from other teams, which may raise the cost of keeping them. Sessions would likely become too expensive to retain, barring a complete lack of interest from other teams (unlikely). Relying on Goudelock and Eyenga in any capacity makes me nervous.

But still, I think the Lakers have to go for it because D12 is too good of an asset for the team, particularly with regards to providing someone to build around after Kobe. I doubt the team would contend right away barring some really good moves to bring in better role players, substantial improvement from the rookies, and/or the Buss family just saying "f*** it" and paying a ton of luxury tax. I'd be very excited to see what kind of damage a Pau/D12 frontcourt would do though.

kobes contract is just so heavy under the new cba, I mean, he is worth every penny, but its really restricting the lakers from moving forward.

would the lakers get howards bird rights if they make a trade?

I'd also take a Pau/Howard front court because you can run the offense through Pau all day long when Kobe isn't on the court. Still gonna have to find some role players immediately or get Derek Fisher back at the minimum

I had heard that the proposed deal to get D12 would include GWall, so I left him out.

It looks like the offer is lopez/hump/brooks + 3 or 4 first round picks.

I think you're drastically underestimating dwill + dwight. Dwight has played with essentially scrubs for the last however many years and taken his team deep in the playoffs almost every year. I'm not saying they are overnight instant contenders for the championship. But a team of dwight + jj + dwill + crash as a core is scary as fuck regardless of the scrubs you surround it with. They just signed reggie evans + mirza also.

Let's talk money anyways. First off, Prokhorov is the second richest owner in the league. His net worth is 13 billion dollars. You don't think they're consulting him a bit before they make some of these moves? I'm sure they don't give a rats ass about being 8-10 million over the tax threshold. The extra 30-50 mill that they'll be paying in taxes is nothing to him. More importantly, NY is the biggest market in professional sports. The amount of money that they could potentially make in tv revenue alone justifies the expenses. NY is a huge market compared to Miami. Miami actually lost money this year in part because their TV deals are nothing compared to chicago/LA/new york. And of course ticket sales are going to go further in new york than most other places.

Anyways, the point is, money doesn't matter. This team still has a good chance of being profitable. And if they're not, so what? Clearly prokhorov doesn't really give a rats ass right now.

Also, about their cap preventing player signings. Once they get a verbal commitment from dwill, they will undoubtedly sign him after they sign on a few more free agents. With his bird rights, they can go however far over the cap they can afford to. So they'll have something like 8-10 million bucks to work with and sign a bunch of players.

This is deceptively the most intelligent move of the offseason.

NYK wanted to include landry in a sign-and-trade deal with the Suns for Nash. Now that is off the table. Which makes it harder for NYK to work out a deal for Nash. So the Raptors have slowly pissed off some of their competition.

And suppose NYK do land Nash anyways. Well the raptors are going to go after Lin. And odds are, with Lin's best friend (Landry) going to Toronto, he'll have some incentive to follow.

That offer sheet really puts Toronto in a good place to sign either Nash or Lin.

There is a 74 million dollar hard cap. They can't afford everyone. Doesn't matter how rich the owner is.

And yes I'm underestimating D-Will + Dwight because I've seen them play for the last 5 years. I kinda hope this deal happens so people can see how badly this crashes and burns once Deron Williams steps off the court.

Evans: $1.6M

Total: $74.3M for 6 players

That's a lot of payroll for less than half of a roster.

Yes agree with a lot of this and what the other guy said about baseball's model of what a new stadium does, which is what I meant when I said this earlier

Wow. With the promised of a new stadium and excitement of a new team, maybe Prokhorov figures now is the time to go for it if he does. It is fair to say he could wipe his ass with 100 million so maybe he decided to just do it.

I am sure the Nets aren't really worried about not being profitable even with the luxury tax they will pay if/when they go over. I am not sure about your last paragraph though. If D-Will signs with them I am pretty sure it just means that they can resign HIM without taking into account the cap, not any player.

NBA doesn't have a hard-cap, just a soft cap. Teams can go over the soft-cap but have to pay luxury taxes over the $74 million you say and aren't allowed to straight up sign free-agents anymore though, unless they use their exceptions. But ya, the whole point of the CBA was to make these teams paying the taxes suffer more for it.

And interesting about the Nash-to-NYK angle by Toronto on signing Fields. Had no idea on that before you mentioned it but makes so much sense!
