Not sure how I feel about Nash for the Lakers. On one hand, he should help their offense run more smoothly and his perimeter shooting should open things up more for the bigs and Kobe in the post. However, I'm not sure if the Lakers have the means to cover up Nash's defensive deficiencies and he's definitely not adding any much-needed quickness or athleticism to the roster.

If getting Nash can make the Lakers more patalable to D12, it's definitely worth it. Guess we'll see.

Nash has never been a defensive juggernaut or athletic guy though anyway. It's hi ability to run an offense that will hugely benefit the Lakers. He'll get everyone in that team much better looks and stop Kobe's hero ball.

So if the Lakers are using the Odom TPE to absorb Nash's 8mill, am I right in saying they'll have $87 mill committed in salary next year? That's pretty sick.

Sick as in, oh my god they are going to be paying a LOT of luxury tax?

Yeah pretty much... If I'm reading things correctly, they'll be paying $10mill more than team #2 in salary (Miami).

My mind is boggled as well. Are the Lakers basically saying F U to the new CBA?

They got deep pockets like old KTF back in the day. Only difference is that they'll actually win a championship xD

http://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2012/02/26/new-cable-deal-make-los-angeles-lakers-most-valuable-nba-team/

When the Los Angeles Lakers inked their new television deal with Time Warner Cable that begins with the 2012-13 season they instantly became the NBA’s most valuable team, worth $900 million.

Here’s the best way to look at why the Lakers, whose deal with TWC will average $200 million a year and is guaranteed for 15 years, rose 40% in value from the previous year: Assuming a 7% discount rate over 15 years makes the cable deal worth $1.8 billion. The players will get about $900 million of that bounty based on the league’s new collective bargaining agreement. So it’s a $900 million windfall for team owners Jerry Buss and Phil Anschutz.

No we know they have $$, I'm saying what is their cap situation? Do they still have the full mid-level available? I thought they would have used it + the Lamar TPE to fit Nash in and hit the 74 million dollar cap? Gotta wait for details I guess.

Is Grant Hill an unrestricted FA? If so, it'd be amazing if Nash could convince him to sign with the Lakers for a tiny contract to try to win a ring.

I'm pretty sure I kept reading that they only have a mini mid-level since they exceeded the cap last season.

I thought you could go over the cap as long as you pay your lux tax? Am I missing something here about a 74 mill ceiling? (NBA cap is so compex )

Such a sick beat for the Raptors too. I wish Nash had gone to the Knicks. Would've been interesting to see if he could bring their offense together.

Wth. I agree with Cyric's original assesment of this trade. It's good in terms of the deal I guess, just not sure about the fit yet and will feel weird in general . But how can anyone worry about Nash fitting in is what the other side of my head says so just gonna wait and see how this defense works...

Steve Nash is a Laker!!! PUMPED now just fire Mike Brown and get Phil back (I wish). Tired of watching them stop playing in the last 5 minutes of games and Kobe trying to do it all with 2 of the best big men in the game.

And from what I have seen, they just got him in a sign and trade for the Odom trade exception and the picks. That doesn't count as the mini mid-level that they still have, as far as I know (this is the last season teams over-the-cap can do s&t like this one I think). It is pretty much like trading player for player.

The lakers still have the mini mid-level (which they can split up into 2 more players if they want to- i think-) and can resign the players that ended last season with them or use them in a sign and trade for Howard or someone else. And minimum contracts of course.

Also keep in mind folks, the new luxury tax costs and revenue sharing don't start until 2013-2014 seasons. So teams still pay 1:1 on the luxury tax for every dollar they are over the cap this season. Not that crazy formula they made it to now, where Lakers and Mavs will pay like at least quadruple more (lol to them).

edit: mcroberts still on the books?? oh gosh forgot they signed him to 2 years lol. PS I never actually seen Lakers cap numbers, just deducing from what I know of the nba cap rules (which prob isn't much tho I consider myself a nerd for this stuff).
