By itself, I don't like the Nash trade that much: 27m over 3 years to a 38 year old guard who cannot defend is a "win now or bust" move. And as it stands, LAL still cannot get past OKC or MIA. But they did need a PG, and perhaps can put together more trades, giving them a better chance next season.

That OKC series was as close to being 3-1 Lakers as it was to 3-1 OKC. The Lakers made some terrible mistakes late in 2 of the losses and OKC capitalized. I think the gap is much closer right now than people believe, although it would have widened in the coming years. That widening has probably been delayed a year because of the acquisition of Nash.

On Nash's defense, it's not like anybody will be staying in front of the Westbrooks or Parkers of the NBA. No one really can consistently. The Lakers, and by extension the league, will have to deal with that for the foreseeable future because of the apparent no-touch rules in the current NBA. The Lakers are at no more of a disadvantage than anybody else. What every SHOULD be worried about is how you stop LeBron James with the way the game is officiated because the road to the rings runs through Miami, and will for a while.

Another interesting possibility, although probably pipe, is that with the addition of Nash, Dwight may be more interested in playing with the Lakers. Once upon a time the Magic wanted to acquire Nash and Dwight was on board with it. I'm not convinced Bynum's plodding pace fits with Nash (it doesn't actually), or that Drew will adapt to it (he won't, Shaq didn't). I think Howard, if healthy, fits much better with the Lakers+Nash than Bynum ever will, and gives the Lakers a more consistent watchdog near the rim when those speedy guards and LBJ's get past our 70+ year old backcourt.

Good post seanisgrand, agree entirely. I had heard magic wanted to include j.rich in any deal to the lakers too so wonder if this complicates things now.

edit: can't say I didn't see the Dragic signing coming next

Anything to improve Nash's chances at winning a ring I'm cool with. That man deserves it.

There's a lot more to defense than just staying in front of the guy you're guarding. Nash just isn't really good in many aspects of defense that matter on the perimeter. Either way I think it was a good move for the Lakers.

I've been ranting on that series for a long time now. People say "oh OKC ez 4-1, Lakers suck". Lakers lost games 2 and 4 late in the 4th with leads. God I hate Bynum for saying "Oh closing out games is ez derp". I somehow KNEW instant karma would come and bite us in the ass.

Agree with the faster paced game though. I think we need Howard, someone who puts effort into his game to help others, while Bynum is just too immature and does what he wants.

I'm no Lakers fan, but I've been advocating a trade for Howard for some time, it just makes sense to me. I think he can be the most exciting player on the court, only when playing in the right scheme, and the Nets do not have that scheme.

Agreed. I think he was more referring to people saying how Westbrook is gonna blow by Nash. Which is true, but he would have done that to Ramon or most people for that matter.

Kyle Lowry is sent to Toronto for a deal including future lottery picks to Houston!

I like the idea of Lowry in Toronto, he was sooo good in the first half of the season! Hope he stays healthy

Wow, nice job Toronto. Depending on what picks were traded, etc., it actually sounds like a decent plan B for them after failing to get Nash.

edit: sources say it wasn't a Plan B. They wanted him even if they got Nash.

I dont like it. Giving up a lottery pick for Lowry while they are still stuck with Bargs? :/

ETA: Their defense should go up a notch though.

they traded an unprotected pick? oh geez..still haven't checked out deal but about to as soon as I post this.
EDIT:guaranteed lottery pick wtf...if it's in the 11-13s or wherever the lottery ends it might not be so bad, this one kind of hard to gauge somewhat. I do like Lowry's play and his contract is nice but not if it turns out to be a one-year rental. Too many questions so I'll just wait and see.

Clippers get Billups and Crawford. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8132526/sources-los-angeles-clippers-keep-chauncey-billups-get-jamal-crawford

edit2: just heard a Nash interview on the radio <3

toronto loves to store up these assets without producing a real team. I guess they saw lowry on the cheap and finally worked out a deal they liked, to bad they didn't do it on draft night, could've got their pick and lowry, while keeping this future lottery pick.

torontos luck, its a #14 pick, that rolls #1, houstans luck, its a #1 pick that rolls #5.

Houston's luck sounds a lot like the Wizards luck. They had a string or recent years where the lottery gave them the lowest pick possible for their slot.

It seems like EJ really doesn't want the Hornets to match. He might pull a Joe Johnson and explicitly ask for an effective "release." He'll probably never forgive the Clips but I still think that the Clippers were his destiny

I will continue to love in my phantom universe of Kyrie, EJ, Random wing, Blake, DeAndre and Bledsoe with tons of cap space Q_Q

Four years, $28.8M. But NY will match. Jersey and ticket sales, baby!

EDIT: So far the PG merry go round looks like this:

Kidd: DAL to NYK
Lin: NYK to HOU [if NYK doesn't match]
Lowry: HOU to TOR
Calderon: TOR to ???

Moar trades please!!!
Dwight to LAL for draft picks til 2O25!
