Take away a lot of skill out of knowing the different moves in the game and when/how to block each of them.

Hey, even I've been away for a while. But the fighting game community is very welcoming when I got back this week. I feel so lucky to have both TL.net and 8wayrun for support. <3

Also, I agree that the lack of Cassandra is a crime. I believe her to be a core character in the series. As long as they have Rafa I'm happy.

Combos in these games take up to 60-80% of health. In that regards, they are not very dynamic, you mess up once and the game is over. That's just poor design. Soul Calibur, in contrast, is very dynamic (with the exception of Hilde in SC4, who got banned). It's a battle of wits the entire way through. There are also less 50/50 coin flip attacks than SSF4. Throws can be riposte (looking at you Zangief!). You can see attacks coming a mile away, identify the animation and react accordingly. MK9 is similar, but definitely not as deep. And oh yea...no fireball spamming! As a long time fighting game fan with a decent level in a couple of them, I couldn't agree more (although I like other series as well). They do need to focus on balance though, as Hilde was an abomination. I wonder if they really take the competition seriously, I guess we'll see with this one!

I'm a big fan of the series and I personally liked SC3 the most. Btw as you can see, Nightmare is my favourite character. ![]()

...Multiplayer wise, it almost destroyed the entire community!!! The G22 glitch made the game unplayable, broken beyond belief! For those of you unfamiliar with this... There was a glitch in SC3 that allowed ANY character to cancel out of almost ANY animation by pressing Guard, down, down (G22). You can even cancel out the animation of your character being damaged, guard impacted and thrown! IT also led to the ability to execute some ridiculous combos and infinites such as executing multiple throws in one chain. Competitive wise, the game was utterly trash. SC3 was a dark dark part of the soul calibur history in which many of us are still trying to forget! + Show Spoiler +

For those of you wondering about the gameplay as it compares to SC2, it's WAY different. That isn't such a bad thing as all of my beefs with SC2 (the Soul Calibur one) were fixxed with this version of the game. Namely there are many ways to punish passive defense where in SC2 you could safely step guard and there was no way to punish that besides beating the guard. Now the Guard Gauge will build up damage until it bursts and gives a free combo. The moves that build it up the most are the ones that are vulnerable to sidestep or backstep. So if your defense is more active and you use sidestep it won't be an issue, but if you want to just sit there blocking your meter is going to build up really fast and you might find yourself getting bursted every couple rounds. There are many other gameplay elements that have changed and I'm in the process of writing a primer to them for 8way so I will post a link up in here once that's done. For the people wondering if the option select jump (option select is where you input something and the system will always pick the right answer) will break the game. I can say it's not going to be nearly an issue, the main reason being using the OS puts you there standing with guard and in this game the Guard Meter damage really racks up when you throw out linear moves. You can also see the opponent twitching if they are spamming the OS. When you put those 2 things together they are literally telling you when to murder their guard. Not saying there aren't specific applications that really fuck with the intended meta, for example Seigfreid stance mixups are totally blown up by that, but he can attack the guard gauge instead of going for mid/low mixups. In a nutshell, the game rewards active and aggressive play while giving you multiple ways to punish passive play. So while you can play defensively, the hold G and force you to hit low or throw shit is done. You have to take risks to see rewards... and that means that no matter what level you play at the gameplay doesn't reward lame it out strategies when you are willing to take a few steps to counter things people want to try and abuse. Because for everything that seems abuse-able there are a couple ways to deal with it. You just need to find one you want to run with ![]() Finally if any of you are in the NY/NJ/PA area (or anywhere with good latency to there and a local scene to latch onto) and you are looking at making a run at competitive SCV I am still looking for some players to participate in a show I created. The show is called Breaking in the New Blood and it's going to track a few new players picking up SCV as their first foray into competitive SC. I'm looking specifically for people with NO EXPERIENCE in competitive fighting games. You simply have to put in practice time that's weekend warrior status when you compare it to the pro starcraft gamers, video blog on a weekly basis over a skype call and show up to community events at least once a month (Going to Evo is REQUIRED!)... Oh and please keep this on the low as I haven't done any announcements that the show will exist and I want to pick people from outside the FG community as the ones with no experience. PM me if you are interested and I can go over the specifics Thanks for reading ![]()

I'm getting my own copy today probably so I can put in some actual lab work. Viola is so fun to play with XD Thanks for the insight on the game Bibulus. It'll give me something to keep in mind while starting SC5. Also, that show you're planning seems like an awesome idea. If just I were eligible, I would consider participating ![]()

I don't remember the newest version of BB having 60-80% combos or at least without using up a ton of meter. MK9 is similar, but definitely not as deep. The only thing I'm gathering from all this, is that high level SC is a reactive guessing game. Low/mid/high fuzzy guard anyone? However, I seriously doubt that it's anywhere near as bad as DoA (which is basically rock/paper/scissors with tits). On January 29 2012 01:02 neoghaleon55 wrote: And oh yea...no fireball spamming!
