I spent ~1 hour playing Final Fantasy Dimensions today (after giving up on re-playing FF5... got stuck on the twin towers... the shit is too hard QQ). It seems pretty good, actually.
The character progression system seem to be almost exactly the same as FF5 (and 3? I haven't played 3 in a very long time). You can choose any jobs, you gain EXP and AP in battle, etc. You also try to protect crystals, but you fail and the crystal shatter into pieces... and when you pick up the shattered crystal pieces pieces you get new jobs. Not sure what happens when you master jobs, though, since I just got the jobs... we will see.
The difference, however, is that there seems to be a lot of playable characters. I see 7 already. The maximum party size is 5. I expect more playable characters in the future.
What about these characters? Are they interesting? Well, with only one hour of game time it's hard to tell right now, but...
Well sad to see that this topic isn't more active just a heads up the Lightning Returns demo is available on both US and EU now. If you link your Facebook or Twitter to Outerworld Services(It's in the settings) and then beat the game and post a screenshot you will earn a costume for when the game releases.
Gotta say after running through the demo twice I really love the new combat system. Can't wait to play the full game! Demo is very short so it's definitely worth checking out.

There is a blonde girl in a maid uniform with twintails and tsundere personality.
That's good enough for me to keep playing.
Huh, never heard of FF Dimensions before this. That's not that terrible mobile game where you have to pay to play, right?
You pay for the app... and you play it like any regular FF games, really. There are no p2w microtransactions, in case that's what you are asking.
I have ALMOST beaten it now... at 44 hours of playtime, I am at the last boss (I am guessing it's the last boss due to the special boss combat music and the gross difficulty).
The game is actually a lot like FF3. There are no glaring problems with it, except that it's a bit grindy (44 hours just to get to last boss).
If you want to know more I can describe it in more details.

Well, I know there's one where you like swipe your finger across the screen to attack and stuff, and you pay real money to go to famous final fantasy locations and unlock characters. I guess this isn't that though lol, which is good. Anyway it sounds interesting, maybe interesting enough to get a real phone. How's the story?

TL is mostly nostalgic of the 6 to 10 era.
So it's really no surprise that 13-3 doesn't get much interest here. And anyway it's hard to see 13-3 as something more than a spin-off. It looks decent for what it is based on the demo but at full price I'm really not excited. Maybe at half price I'll make the acquisition if it turns out to be a fine game.

Playing Final Fantasy Dimensions with (what I think is) 720p glory has destroyed my ability to play on the GBA emulator.
I heard it doesn't look nice, the sprites are really ugly or something
yeah doesn't look that nice, portrait art and background on the other hand looks really nice but the character sprites make me cringe..
Wow, what the hell were they thinking ???
I think it looks fine (not as good as Dimension's sprites, but fine looking). But I am holding my wallet for FFT.

im guessing it works on an android emulator? (no idea will find out)
FFD looks sick too, thanks for sharing....
FF6 would look better if they made those black borders like in FFD? still terra soooo pretty
Yeah I got my "main" characters to level 75+. There is an end-game dungeon where I can repeatedly beat Omega Weapon and such, but I am going to need a lot of grinding to get there. If you want some tips on what jobs to take, read below:
OK, Warriors of Darkness jobs are really good. Warriors of Light jobs suck. Warriors of Light should be used only for supportive roles once you are in the merged world. Only Warriors of Darkness gets the Ninja job, and they have several other skills that allow them to attack 4 or 6 times. So each turn they can attack 8 or 12 times. Really broken. As a Warrior of Light you can at best attack twice.

They changed the combat system? I really hated FF13 + 13-2's combat system.
I fucking LOVED the flashiness of it all though and enjoyed 13's story.
13-2s story was...well i dont even remember it or what it was supposed to be about, or why the caius dude even mattered. The intro was amazing though. God that game was such a letdown.

because its my favorite game of the series, I love all the characters, Kefka is fucking awesome and it has the best music in the series, hell it even has the best victory fanfare.

Well yes the combat has not much to do with 13 and 13-2. It's somewhat a hybrid between the paragon system of 13 and Tales of combats... Before fight you can setup 3 costumes(armor, accessories, weapon) that will give you a different set of stat (mag, atk) and 4 abilities(magics, melees and a block). In combat you switch between these costumes by pressing L1 R1. Each costume has an action bar that replenishes over time (even if you're on a different costume). You then use the 4 abilities associated with your costume (A,B,X,Y) to defeat the enemy and press block when an attack is incoming. The idea obviously being to use the most efficient (vulnerabilities) set of skills and switching costumes when the action bar is drained. You only control Lightning.
I guess that sums it up the system. Demo is available anyway.
I thought 13-2's combat system was an awesome refinement to 13's, but it wasn't enough to get over the terrible story. Once the moogle literally started following you around to the point where the screen was filled up by his stupid face I had to throw it away. It's a shame because I was looking forward to the game play. I'll probably get FF6 for android.

I dunno, I think song for song, VIII has the best overall soundtrack, but I love Aria Di Mezzo Carattere, Terra's Theme, and the boss and Fanfare themes a ton. Still, the combat in 6 and the stat growth/esper system is even worse than the broken mess that is the junction system, not to mention the absurdly high random battle rate with a few bullshit monsters. I didn't ever finish it...
TBH, I really liked FFXII's real-time battle system the best in the series because you could do some really cool strategic things with it, but it was a fiddly pain in the ass a lot of the time.
Anyway, has anyone played XIV? What's the combat/progression system like?
