Hey guys so I got this mouse for like 7months now and I think I have accumulated enough dirt from my hands to the mouse, and now the mouse has a little bump when I click it but the good thing is that it does not register the click that the first bump that is done.

So to the owners of the same mouse. Have you cleaned your mx518 or opened it up to clean it? Would really appreciate any tips

For me when I usually vacum my desk with the hose thing I let it suck from the optical hole. Then I use a 91% rubbing alcohol to clean the surface. But be careful about the silver/metal looking top because it started to rub off. Doesn't affect the mouse though. I never opened it up though, not only it would be risky to break it. I can't imagine that much dust going in. Unless you play in an area where many cobwebs exist.

I've had this mouse for about 5 years now and never cleaned it inside once. The most I've done is wiped down the top with a paper towel and some windex or used a small paper clip to clear dust between the buttons once or twice. This mouse is a tank and will last forever.

Just clean it from the outside, you probably do more harm then good if you open it up. You have to take off the gliding pads ( or whatever you want to call them ) to get to the screws and its a pain to get them working properly again.

Unless the mouse is so dirty that you cant push the buttons anymore its fine

I had the down sensitivity button break off and had to take apart the mouse to glue the button back on and in the process the piece that makes the scroll wheel click fell out and I couldn't figure out how to get it back in. The scroll still works it just doesn't click. Something to keep in mind if you try and open it.

You can take it apart but the way the scroll wheel mechanism is really complex and if you don't pay super close attention to how it is put together you will never get it right. A lot of stuff does build up in there over time though so if you still have it after a year or too then I might give it a go.
