I've been an avid Final Fantasy fan since I was 10 years old (that was the Playstation generation, for those keeping score). Though Square Enix seems hellbent on changing their winning formula (FFXIII makes me rage), they're still a fantastic company in charge of a storied and amazing series. So let's talk about it! Follow my lead.
Final Fantasy I Advanced --------------------------------------
The gameboy advanced version of FFI was my first experience with the game, and I jumped into it with both feet. I grew up within the extremely constrictive and linear school of FF (that being 7,8, and 9), so the open world felt at once confusing and menacing. That being said--after my initial frustration subsided--exploring that world became a treat; not to mention FFI is the only FF that makes sense to be called FF (if that makes any sense). Garland was a total boss. End of story.
Final Fantasy VI ----------------------------
Played this on an emulator after trying and failing to play through it on the playstation (I love FF, but I'm not good at them on the first or second runs). As soon as I got attacked by muggers in a town hub, I was hooked. Kefka was hilarious and infuriating, awesome and horrible, omnipotent and laughable. Definitely one of the best villains ever conceived. Terra was a little stupid, but that didn't really put me off. The story reminded me of Star Wars in the sense that--even in the midst of The World of Ruin--it didn't take itself too seriously. so gooooood (it's better than VII, by the way. I liked VII, but at the risk of sounding "edgy" and "kewl" I'm going to say it was overrated)
Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX ----------------------------------------------------------- Grew up with them. Silly little adventures. Awesome battle music. Nuff said.
Final Fantasy X -------------------------- For me, this is the quintessential Final Fantasy. The story is stupidly deep, once you get past Tidus and Yuna's little lovefest. It had religious themes (both for and against), patricide undertones--hell, the last boss is a metaphor for parasitism (Yu Yevon as a bug, living inside the monstrous Sin, hullo). It's basically a giant slap in the face of the usual sacrificial bullshit that permeates these games. It also looked really pretty. Remember when you left Zanarkand's temple and the camera panned over to reveal Sin towering over everything? Just incredible. They also gave a great fan service by repeating Garland's immortality plot (Yu Yevon living in Sin, feeding off of the Final Summons). Seymour was also a great villain, if extremely...persistent. I could go on and on (the Al Bhed, the desert, the mountain, the Fayth wall, etc etc), but I won't.
Everything after FFX -------------------------------- Yeah, not digging it. FFXII and FFXIII are the only "normal" games to come out after X, and they're not fantastic. FFXIII in particular is pure bilge. Emo kid named Hope? Check. Subtley racist black-man caricature? Yup! Lightning, Snow. Awful names for generic characters. The party breaks up way too often. I dunno, maybe I should give it another chance, but I doubt I will. Hell, I'll go as far to say that Lost Odyssey was slightly better (but that was garbage also). FFX-2 was actually an okay game. Leagues over XIII. Did I mention that I hate FFXIII? Yeah, I hate FFXIII.
Your turns!

You might want to move this over to sports and gaming. Not sure how this would fit into general over that.
|
Final Fantasy is filled with banal insights on human nature.
For example, "The key is your heart." But regardless, I still love the games to death...however the fighting often got really boring.
|
I been an FF fanboy for a LONG time Hope some new titles revive the series.
FF14 was an absolutely joke, biggest bomb ever. Oddly enough thought FF13 was alright but of course 6,7,8 were the greatest in my eyes.
FFX-2 better than 13? Wow. Never thought I'd hear that. That was the worst one ever imo. They re-used all the old areas and the new ones looked like they were made with a Quake 1 map editor.

Clicked the wrong forum. -_-
My bad coach!

I hated FFXIII voice acting, story and characters but loved the gameplay.
|
FF10 is way worse then 7/8...
The baseline Story is nothing special at all... No matter how "good" the sidelines are (the stuff you talk about). Add into this that Tidus is a stupid Crybaby... Wakka ugh... Lulu ugh...

Something hilarious, is that I've never actually beaten a Final Fantasy game.
Part of this, is that I played some of them, when I was young, and thus bad, the other reasons, are that I stopped for some reason or another (When I was little, I often ran from random encounters, and then was crippled by weak characters in later stages of the game), or that I didn't own many, and had to return them to the rental place. XD
However, I've played:
Final Fantasy 1+2 (GBA version, own this) Final Fantasy VII (Got to the prison/scrapyard, had to return the game) Final Fantasy VIII (Got to the part, where you go into a clocktower or something for the assassination, then had to return the game) Final Fantasy IX (Owned this one, got to the latter stages of the game, got screwed by taking casters in the part where everyone's silenced or something :p) Final Fantasy X (Just randomly stopped playing, own) Final Fantasy X-2 (Got stuck due to only ever using one class on each char and running from encounters, own) Final Fantast XII (Randomly stopped playing, own) Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance (Beat this one, but don't really consider it to be a real FF game for some reason :p) Final Fantasy: Tactics (One of my favourite games ever, played the PS version, own the PSP version. Randomly stopped playing)
After writing this list, I think I'm actually going to go back, and try to actually play through one of the games, to the end. :p
I don't know why I always stopped, but I have a real bad problem, with starting games, and never finishing them, I could probably make a giant list of like a hundred games or something where I did that, haha.
EDIT: I'm actually almost a little glad, I'm not really going to play the games until now. This is because, I just remembered, that playing back when I was young, I mean ages 7-12, I couldn't really appreciate the story anyways. I actually don't even remember most plot details for a lot of the games I played when I was young, so it will be a fresh experience for me, and not a repeat.
EDIT2: I've also watched that movie, Spirits Within, or whatever. I don't remember too much, except it was a little weird, I'd probably have to rewatch it to make a definite judgement. Never seen Advent Rising though.

Can I get some help? I feel like FF9 is very difficult, I love the story but I can't get past Gizamaluke . He hits so hard and I always run out of potions. I followed a FAQ so I have every item up to this point but I get clobbered. I tried leveling up but I get killed by the normal mobs as well.

I don't get how you are dying I only used Zidane to steal and still killed him. Just use jump constantly, thunder with vVivi, heal with Quina as well as attacking and attack with Zidane. Should be over quick if you have all the gear and maybe level 12-13+.

I don't know if non users can read somethingawful threads but they have an AMAZING Let's Play that walks through the game very well, it's also a hilarious read.
Also I'm going to rage on Hope hate, the kid saw his mom die right in front of his eyes and how old is he? Like middle school? Cut him some slack he isn't exactly mature like the rest of you if you wanted a super manly "moms dead gotta move on" you have pretty high expectations of children. Aside from that the game was just hold forward press X, for me my import was just a 60 dollar japanese lesson haha so I actually enjoyed the cutscenes more than the actual gameplay xD
FFX I have 400+ hours played because monster arena is probably the only part of a final fantasy game that has actually challenged me
FFVIII I got to ultimecias castle and saved over a puzzle part that I did incorrectly and hadnt saved since I had gotten odin because I had a habit of just leaving my PS on instead of saving. So I just dropped it.
FFIX I hate it as a kid because they had big heads and they weren't the angsty teens with spiky hair that was into but going into the game when I got older I realized missed out on so much. That game is story and gameplay wise pretty freaking amazing.
Tactics, advance and a2 all were pretty funsies but never took them seriously.
vs13 looks pretty freaking amazing its like Kingdom Hearts battle system but FFXIII graphics which is my favorite of both the series and I'm really looking forward to it. I mean you can switch to each character and control them APPARENTLY seamlessly and their portraits are animated showing whats going on around them always.

SILLY? NUFF SAID? Well (for FF8) i definitely thought the summon system was really spot on, and probably the best system for a while. Fair summon times, you more vulnerable then usual, and pretty awesome cut scenes. Though it was really long and drawn out if used multiple times in a battle. Oh and holding select and spamming square was a good way to tolerate the long scene.

T_T I feel like a nub. I even tried not stealing and just hitting him but I get raped. I feel like the healing in the game is hard. I am so used to All-Restore from FF7 and never dying.

Do you have Quina in your group, or did you miss picking him/her up?

I love FF series. I finished FF IV,V,XIII,IX,X,X-2.XIII.
XIII was disappointing. Graphics are great but game is way too linear and story seems bit confusing.
FF X was pretty awesome, even it was linear like almost all other ff games but i still loved that game.
And finally. FF IX. is my all time favorite. I been spending so much time playing that game. Great story. Awesome characters, this game never get's old

lol oops! I will get back on track!
My Story:
I have always known about FF from my childhood. I remember my friends talking about FF7 when we were very young, but I never really got into that RPG stuff. I thought it was a real bore. But now that I am older, I tried out FF7 (my first Final Fantasy game) to see what the fuss was about. Wow, I am so glad that I did because the gameplay and the story blew me away. All the cool summons (my favorite is Knights of the Round because it gives me time to make a sammich) and collecting all the ultimate weapons for my toons. FF7 was so good because throughout the entire game you know about Sephiroth and how badass and crazy as fuck he is and then you get to fight him in a huge dramatic battle! I was like "oh shit it's Sephiroth". Needless to say I kicked his ass with Cloud and my over 9000 toons.
Currently, I am playing FF8, FF4, and FF9. FF9 I am loving because I think Zidane and Dagger are so cool, but as you can see I am having a seizure because I cannot get past a boss.
I hope this makes up for my other off topic posts.

Aaah, FF... so many sweet memories of my childhood.
It's still to my eternal shame that I've never finished FFIV... I got through to what I assume was nearly the end on my old PS1, found some dragons that wiped my entire party in seconds and just gave up.
I've got FFIV for DS now... summer project is to get that shit finished.
