Also, if you don't like spoilers, stay away from this thread. kkthnx) I've been an avid Final Fantasy fan since I was 10 years old (that was the Playstation generation, for those keeping score). Though Square Enix seems hellbent on changing their winning formula (FFXIII makes me rage), they're still a fantastic company in charge of a storied and amazing series. So let's talk about it! Follow my lead. Final Fantasy I Advanced -------------------------------------- The gameboy advanced version of FFI was my first experience with the game, and I jumped into it with both feet. I grew up within the extremely constrictive and linear school of FF (that being 7,8, and 9), so the open world felt at once confusing and menacing. That being said--after my initial frustration subsided--exploring that world became a treat; not to mention FFI is the only FF that makes sense to be called FF (if that makes any sense). Garland was a total boss. End of story. Final Fantasy VI ---------------------------- Played this on an emulator after trying and failing to play through it on the playstation (I love FF, but I'm not good at them on the first or second runs). As soon as I got attacked by muggers in a town hub, I was hooked. Kefka was hilarious and infuriating, awesome and horrible, omnipotent and laughable. Definitely one of the best villains ever conceived. Terra was a little stupid, but that didn't really put me off. The story reminded me of Star Wars in the sense that--even in the midst of The World of Ruin--it didn't take itself too seriously. so gooooood (it's better than VII, by the way. I liked VII, but at the risk of sounding "edgy" and "kewl" I'm going to say it was overrated) Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX ----------------------------------------------------------- Grew up with them. Silly little adventures. Awesome battle music. Nuff said. Final Fantasy X -------------------------- For me, this is the quintessential Final Fantasy. The story is stupidly deep, once you get past Tidus and Yuna's little lovefest. It had religious themes (both for and against), patricide undertones--hell, the last boss is a metaphor for parasitism (Yu Yevon as a bug, living inside the monstrous Sin, hullo). It's basically a giant slap in the face of the usual sacrificial bullshit that permeates these games. It also looked really pretty. Remember when you left Zanarkand's temple and the camera panned over to reveal Sin towering over everything? Just incredible. They also gave a great fan service by repeating Garland's immortality plot (Yu Yevon living in Sin, feeding off of the Final Summons). Seymour was also a great villain, if extremely...persistent. I could go on and on (the Al Bhed, the desert, the mountain, the Fayth wall, etc etc), but I won't. Everything after FFX -------------------------------- Yeah, not digging it. FFXII and FFXIII are the only "normal" games to come out after X, and they're not fantastic. FFXIII in particular is pure bilge. Emo kid named Hope? Check. Subtley racist black-man caricature? Yup! Lightning, Snow. Awful names for generic characters. The party breaks up way too often. I dunno, maybe I should give it another chance, but I doubt I will. Hell, I'll go as far to say that Lost Odyssey was slightly better (but that was garbage also). FFX-2 was actually an okay game. Leagues over XIII. Did I mention that I hate FFXIII? Yeah, I hate FFXIII. Your turns! Final Fantasy 13, the bastard child some may say of the Final fantasy RPG series....what did they do wrong? Simple, I would say that they made a key mistake that pretty much everyone that complained overlooked. Too LINEAR? Nope, I can argue that 10 was just as linear but it was still pretty damn good. Bad Character? Bad battle system? Grind Fest? Nope. What they did wrong was what the final fantasy series was known for, the STORY. More specifically, the Villain. Villains like Kefka, Sephroth, Kuja, Sins (I know he not last boss but he does draw you toward the story until later...), were what captivated players to keep playing. It makes the player WANT to know the story and give them a reason to keep playing to see the end resolve. The villain in FF13 was just so....boring. If you fought him, I would say it is like fighting against a wall. It takes forever to kill and is flat and boring. Also using words like L'cie, Fal'cie, cieth were confusing as hell. The game had a data log of the game and even still I was confused as hell after reading it countless time and along with reading the chapter summary after loading the game each time. (Finally get it now) Lastly, I would say that if you actually complete FF13, it is not BAD but it was a huge disappointment considering the graphic and potential that the game could of had. It just seriously needed a better villain like the Crazy Maniac Kefka, the "Murderous" Sephiroth, Mysterious Sin. Only final fantasy I Have not played was 4, 5, 11(mmo lolz), 14 (mmo lolz), and 8 but currently playing that right now.

I played.. FF Mystic Quest - Anybody else play this? I didn't even realize it was a Final Fantasy title until I rebought a SNES like 6 years ago.. Played this when I was a kid and remembered it as I grew up, but not for a Final Fantasy. When I revisited it I was equally pleased and humored by how much of the game I actually remembered. Pretty cool game for its time I'm sure, worthy of checking out if you are a real FF fan and haven't had a taste of it. You'll also be whistling along with some of the tunes from it as there are a few good selections for sure. FFIX - The beginning for me. Was my second PS RPG to play (my friend introduced me to Wild Arms and then this). By far my favorite of them all, most likely due to it being my first (I call it my first) and because all the memories me and a few friends shared with countless hours playing it. I've probably been through this game at least a dozen times.. The characters, the music, the side-quests really hooked me for life :D. If you haven't, definitely go through the side-quests in this one. Chocobo Hot and Cold.. Not sure if it is topped by another side-quest from another title. And I never played the card game in VIII, but I thoroughly enjoyed it in IX. I could go on about this for hours, but I'll save you guys from my fantasies (yes i did). FFVII - Played the beginning of this at my cousin's house, my first FF to play by myself (all my previous FF experience came with friends). I remember absolutely loving the Mako Reactor theme even though it wasn't that great just because of the feeling of being in my cousin's basement in the dark and playing it. Hehe! Later the same friends I played FFIX with, bought this and we merrily ran through it (or so I thought). I actually ran through this in its entirety last year by myself and found that I hadn't played like half the story (oops). Everyone I talk to has said this was their #1. Materia.. Sick. Characters.. Sick. It is more of a 'badass' game I feel, unlike the all around-ness that some of the others possess. The only downfall I thought it had was that the story was too short! Was a great story regardless. FFV - Heh. My first experience with the whole 'choosing your class' system. As I was accustomed to the whole set in stone classes from 7+ this was something new and fun. Can remember a lot of jokes from this one as I played it with the same crew (specifically a picture of a flying pig enemy). Also, never actually finished this one myself. I was more of a completionist when I came to my runs (even first gos) which led me to find all the best training spots for their time in the game and would grind levels like crazy. Probably why I would never finish some :D But yeah, definitely an enjoyable title itself. Square's next title would truely start their FF dominance. FFX - The insolence of Tidus.. The playfulness of Rikku.. The awkwardness of Seymour.. Overall this story is abysmal in my opinion. There were some points that I just wanted to turn it off. The funny thing, I rented this game first before buying it as I was still at a young age and my friends had told me that there was cussing in the game and my parents would have none of that. Oh and that if I purchased this I could not purchase the next one as "We only need one Final Fantasy" (facepalm). Just a taste of my life.. Anywho, the post-game (would you call it?) was what really hooked me for another 200 hour trip on FFX. Pretty sweet stuff, catching all the monsters, fighting the unique bosses, then buffing your characters for the even tougher fights. First game I had actually fully completed (Hadn't touched Ultimate Weapon or Osma at this point) and was pleased with my success in conquering a difficult task. But bleh, was this the first game with the new Music Producer? I could be wrong, but that was something that was lacking as compared to the 3-4 before it. And where's the world map? Being able to trek around the world as you please was something that added to the enchantment that is Final Fantasy. FF Tactics - Another different one, and most enjoyable. Again with the classes, me and my main FF friend quickly found a tactic (tehe) to use where we could get ridiculous amounts of exp in fights using scream and defend. Basically abusing the system, but able to complete all classes on each character at an early point in the game. I'm sure it would be quite challenging if we hadn't made buff lineup as there are multiple stages where you had to protect people and what not. Only ever did one run of this, but remember liking it, worthy of recommendation. FFVIII - VIII was another one I played, but never owned. One that I don't recall finishing either. My first taste I had played it at someone's house who I was babysitting for, and only got through the very beginning. When me and my friend picked it up we again used our die hard grinding tactics to suck up every little bit of EXP we could (a strategy we actually initiated in IX, but I only just mentioned). So as we got older I'm sure the grind became too much and we never picked it back up. One I should probably go back and finish as I remember having a good time with it and it getting some good feedback. FFI/FFII - Can't remember which of these I played. It was one on the Gameboy Advance. I would play it in my Sophomore Advanced Chemistry class as the teacher loved to go on rambles and we would never get anything accomplished. Made a B in that class thank you very much. Anyhow, I couldn't figure out the end of this one. For those reading, it was one with 4 crystals and I made it to a tower thing where I then was unsure of where to go. Pretty basic game, probably at the bottom of my list. But a Final Fantasy is a Final Fantasy and if I am given one I will most surely give it a go ^_^ FFXII - Another world map-less title XII was full of interesting HUMAN characters. It seemed in past titles that there were a variety of 'creatures' that filled your main party and even i they looked human there was something different about them. In XII though, this was not the case. I felt like XII mirrored X in a way.. As with the sphere grid in X, in XII everyone in your party could equip the same things. Kind of a stretch but eh that's how it seemed. Also the lack of any characterization was odd for a Final Fantasy. I did like the monster hunting side quest as that most surely kept me busy for hours on end. And it was the first of the new not turned base battle system which was another <3 about previous titles. Definitely fun, but not as mystical as those in the past. Only ever gave it one full playthrough when it came out, maybe I've changed and could find a liking to it nowadays. I watched.. FFVI - Wish I had this one to play for myself. I've heard great things. I played/watched this along with playing V as I think they came together in a set my friend bought. The part he was at in the game did not look interesting at the time however and I just stuck with V. Will probably do a run of this if I can get my hands on it :D FFX-2 - One of my friends was obsessed with X. He even termed the phrase 'Venom Ball!' when we would play any sort of sport. Quite comical, we still give him crap for it haha. I watched him play it a few times, and he even left it on one day I was house sitting for him so I gave it a whirl, but as I picked up where he left off I was lost and just ran around until I gave up. Having an all girl cast was quite interesting. My friend claimed to enjoy it, but like I said I never experienced it so not much to say from my point of view. FFXIII - Another one I watched the same friend play. Probably would have picked it up myself had my Xbox not red ringed Haven't found the time or money to get it fixed/ get a new one however so it will have to wait. He said it was interesting, but realizing that he only got through a third of it made me think otherwise. It seems FF titles have shifted from deep plots and great characterization (by this I mean the characters have unique backgrounds which are explained and relevant to the story) to attempts at new battle schemes and amazing graphics. They need to learn that their hardcore fanbase still exists and to just go with the old, because it was awesome that way. Not saying they can't shock us with different things in the future, just my opinion on the current state of Square. But anyhow, I've had great times, great memories, and great fun with Final Fantasy. It's unlike any RPG I've come across and probably can't be topped in my mind. Love the thread and hope anyone who read this enjoyed my mass recall (yay SC in there!). NasD

But on your point about Square's direction, I agree. They don't seem interested anymore in making character driven stories (with the exception of FFXII--but they were irritating as all hell, so I don't count it.) And whoever said something about memorable villains, you are spot on. Garland flipped time on its head and created an infinite loop (thus the time you kill Chaos is the "final" fantasy). Kefka destroyed the world. Sephiroth blew up the solar system (Supernova is ridiculous, mmkay?). Kuja slaughtered a whole planet (the effeminate bastard). And they always had reasons, none of this "oh I'm just crazy!" nonsense.

For me biggest disappointment of these would be X-2 which felt mostly like a small expansion pack and was sold as full price, felt like a complete rip off and never went back to it after playing through it once. I don't really like the direction the games have been going after X in general. The lead characters seem to be turning less and less interesting and I preferred the old school FF combat system. Fun minigames seem to be vanishing somewhere as well, had so much fun with the likes Blitzball and card games which could have almost been games of their own. Anyway VII is easily my all time favourite, after that probably come X and VI. Some of my better memories with the serie.. Spending hours farming money on VII basketball machine at the amusement park. Playing Blitzball almost more than rest of the game in X. Realising that I can switch Vaan out of the party in XII.

VIII: Until now, my favourite is still VIII, probably because it was my first, but also because of the awesome setting, the badass main character, the fairly challenging junction and G.F. system and the in my opinion best ending compared to the others I've played through. Actually there are whole webpages with interpretations of the ending movie. I also love the soundtrack to an extent that i'm learning some pieces of it on piano. Took me really long to complete the game, leveled everyone to max and got all the necessary spells and weapons. Turns out the boss I could not defeat was Omega Weapon, the hardest optional boss in the game and almost undefeatable without the laguna card (to get 99 invincibility pots). In the end I managed to get him down with a lucky string of rinoa invincibility limit breaks and squall, irvine and zell limit spamming with only the 2 invincibility pots i had stocked. Until now probably the hardest boss I've ever defeated in a video game, but it was very rewarding. You cant imagine my face though when I found out that he wasnt the end boss, but you had to go up the one Tower where you got to Ultimecia. End fight was disappointing cause after Omega Weapon I steamrolled her easily on the first try. Yeah, and then my CD was somehow broken and I could not watch the full ending until I got the game from someone else T_T I played through IX only recently and being (fairly) grown up, it did not impress me that much. Some of the characters were extremely annoying (Vivi, Steiner and that odd Qu thing) or I didnt use them at all (again that Q thing and Amaranth). It still was a very good game, but a little bit too childish and easy. Everything is just ...too cute? You had almost no customisation options compared to VIII or X and the battle system was pretty straightforward with not a lot of options. After I had heard a lot, that it is the best FF thus far, I was a bit disappointed. FF X was extremely good. Beautiful cutscenes, a good story and literally hundreds of hours in minigames and additional challanges (getting bestias, ultima weapons ...). Didn't like Tidus as a main character, but he's not THAT bad. FF X-2 was fun with the girlgroup cast. Combat was refreshing and they didnt have a lot of playable characters (which I liked). It's been a while that I played it, but didnt you need to play through it twice to fully complete it (not the main story, but the extra stuff) cause you needed some unique item on 2 characters? EDIT: Oh, I forgot, played a bit of XII too, but quit it after ~10 hours. Didnt like it

Leagues over XIII. Did I mention that I hate FFXIII? Yeah, I hate FFXIII. Your turns! What was wrong with Lost Odyssey? Its the only good turn based RPG in recent memory, and finally forced you to create a party where everyone either fills their role or dies. I loved the front/back line mechanic. Spells were done almost perfectly too where more powerful ones took multiple turns to cast and getting hit made them take longer. People seem to like to think RPGs are strategic, but most of them boil down to either making your standard attack insane or casting an insanely overpowered spell every turn. Lost Odyssey forced you to have a role for everyone that made or broke your party, and every turn needed to be executed well to survive. Even the beloved Final Fantasy Tactics with the name Tactics in it really was more about each individual character being strong on their own and not as a team. Sure the story was mediocre and Mack was a little bitch (Stop putting little kids in my party dammit), but the gameplay was spot on. It was able to bring the MMO feel FFXII and FFXIII failed so horribly to bring, and it did it damn well. I'm curious as to what exactly your criticisms of it are.

FF VII, I dont know. It sort of rubbed me the wrong way, I hated everything about it, so I never finished it. The others I just haven't bothered trying out yet, except FF 9, 10 and 10-2 over at a friend's place. I enjoyed playing them for a limited amount of time, I will admit, but they just seem too drawn out for me.

Just thinking about the many different places and stories...unbelievable span. From the crashed rocket site where Cid relives his memories, to the wonderland with the many many mini games, to the tribal village home of Red, to the temple made out of the dark materia, to the place where Sephiroth kills Aeris, to the amazing parade and parade music of that town which gets obliterated by (diamond?) weapon. Fucking hell, then include Jenova as an amazing side boss. The whole story segment where Cloud is in a wheelchair and you have to relive Zack's life. It just goes on and on. Unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, I loved quite a few FF's, but I just think FFVII is insanely perfect.

Final Fantasy I: Didn't play it. At least not in recent memory. Will definitely need to find an emulator somewhere as soon as I get motivation. Final Fantasy II: Same story as FFI. FInal Fantasy III: I have it for GBDS, never finished it. Life gets in the way of RPGs way faster than I thought it would. Final Fantasy IV: Replaying it again on PSP. I was finishing it on the PS remake and even at level 80, got my ass handed to me by Zeromus. However, I was patient enough to get 2 Pink Tails :O Final Fantasy V: This is where I started to take notice of Final Fantasy. The Job system was incredibly deep. It was pretty much the guarantee that each playthrough would not be the same, at least until you got Mime. Final Fantasy VI: Probably my favorite Final Fantasy, as each character had a backstory, each character had a motivation and drive, I loved the battle system, and plot twists were amok. Final Fantasy VII: I have the most memories from Final Fantasy VII. Playing it with friends while we swap controllers after each battle. It's not unusual, I don't think I can say what hasn't already been said about the game. Widely hailed as one of, if not, the greatest RPG made, at least for it's time. Final Fantasy VIII: I was not a fan. Squall was whining the entire way, I didn't like the combat system, where using magic physically affected your stats if you didn't know how junctioning worked, and I completely did not understand the story at all. Maybe I just need to replay it to figure out what the hell Ultimecia's role is in the whole thing. Final Fantasy IX: I LOVED VIVI. That being said, I really liked the return to traditional RPG. No fluff, very little experimentation, just pure ATB, 1 character 1 job, and hunting for treasure. However, the last boss was completely out of left field. Final Fantasy X: withyunabymyside. I was completely wtf about that, and that kinda retains today. The last boss was a severe disappointment (being completely impossible to lose), and despite being the first Final Fantasy with voice acting, I really didn't notice. However, I did like blitzball. Final Fantasy X-2: I played it. I beat it. I don't remember it at all. Final Fantasy XI: Didn't play it. Apparently if you didn't start when the game came out, you are pretty screwed. Final Fantasy XII: I despised it. I forced myself to play it, being a Final Fantasy fan, and I still fell asleep during half the game. I eventually got the Zodiac Spear and 1a'd through the game. I thought I'd have the patience to try and get the Tournesol, to no avail. Final Fantasy XIII: I actually liked the combat. It was fast paced and fun. The story left a lot to be desired though, and all the characters went through a definite emo phase throughout the game. I normally don't mind if it's just one or two, if it doesn't detract from the story, but man, it was such a heavy emphasis to look into each characters frame of mind at each passing point. The linearity of the game also threw me off, being a Final Fantasy, I really wanted to explore the world around me, especially after seeing how the opening world looked like. A save point every 5 feet also was wtf for me as well. Final Fantasy XIV: Uh... yeah. However, my favorite game, despite being a Final Fantasy fan, is and forever will be Chrono Trigger.

Well, I don't remember any last boss, of the Final Fantasy games that I have played, being hard even one bit... if you want the challenge they always add secret bosses and "true" bosses like Der Ritcher. You are not going to say to me that the jugde and the dark aeons were weak and disappointment bosses. o_o

If you didn't like it when you first played it, I'd suggest going back for a playthrough later. God that game was incredible. Also, In regards to the guy above who said that FFXII didn't have a world-map - of course it did, the whole game was a world map, albeit not in a top-down fashion! It was the last non-linear FF game!
