i'm a ff fan boy, maybe -ex as i've lost all interest after the horrible ff 13. i'm still trying to finish it out of respect but i can't get around to it.
FF7 is my favorite, finished the game at least 4 times. FF7 was actually my first major RPG, excluding Zelda LTTP. Fastest i beat it i think cloud was level 42 and the game had about 18 hours on it.
FF8, i got to a boss, i dont think final boss but it was huge ship. i progressed too fast, boss was too strong for the characters i had, i couldnt leave the area to grind, i did not have another save point so i just quit the game.
FF9 seemed too cartoonish, stopped playing.
FF10 was dope. first voice acting FF. FF10-2 yeah...not into sequels. tried and stopped playing.
FF11 played for about a month and was sick of the grinding fest.
FF12, wow, greatest looking game on the ps2. great battle system, cool setting, cool characters, cool story. finished.

FFI on Dawn of Souls (GBA version; functionally identical to the PSP version) was way too easy. The encounter rate is absurdly high and the game is locked on FFI+II Origins' (PSOne version) "easy setting" so you basically outlevel the content no matter what you do, and stuff dies incredibly fast. It's cute for a trip down nostalgia lane but I'd play Origins over DoS if you have both options.

If you want a harder challenge, you gotta do the NES version: no quicksaves or that junk, you'll need to use an inn/house to save.
Then again, if you want a challenge, might as well try a white mage solo party

Well any 4 of party (especially fighter) was a challenge. You would think after the first one they would be done. Guess they don't know what the word 'final' means.

Some of the bug fixes in DoS were nice (intellect actually mattered, for example; the thief didn't totally suck), but having beaten FFI on the original NES and on DoS, I'd go with Origins if given the choice.

I've been a Final Fantasy fan since the very beginning, and like a lot of people that have played them in order I always find myself drawn to play the old NES/SNES titles again and again. I've played the majority of the main titles as well as a few of the "spin-offs", but there is just something about the way the characters drove the story in those older titles, rather than just being along for the ride, that always brings me back.
As rudimentary as it was, FFI and the Garland twist was a great start to the franchise.
FFIV will always be a great game in my mind, possibly my favourite Final Fantasy title. The mix of Cecil, Kain, Rosa and Golbez gave more than enough drama to fuel the game, but they went the extra mile with Tellah, Palom and Porom (as short as their contribution was, they always amuse me), Yang, and even to a slightly lesser extend Cid and Edward. There just seemed to be a glut of interesting, vivid characters in that game.
FFVI was also a very memorable title, just seemed to really hit so many high points and never really let you down. And it had Kefka, and he was awesome.
Both the tactics games were really good as well, as were moth of the Playstation era games. Really the only disappointing games in my eyes have been VIII, XIII, and Mystic Quest. They've really been the only Final Fantasy games that have failed to hook me and keep me wanting to play.

... How dare you. Romance isn't a silly adventure, Squall gained a heart man- a heart and if that ain't beautiful then I don't know what is. LOVE CONCURS ALL. Besides the story line, the Junction system was genius, you could have low level characters that hit hard because of the magic you junction (to your stats and atk/def). Also, all the monsters and bosses (bosses range from like 1-40 i think) you encountered where within your level; the game made sure that you didn't have to grind if you didn't want to. To me it was a well thought out system- well it might be that way because I just like to beat the crap of out bosses with physical attacks. :3 (Replayed FFVIII recently- like a week ago) But yeah, best FF in my books (then FFX lol) EDIT²: Oh god FFXII sucked donkey, I never finished it cause I just couldn't force myself to play it. EDIT³: Oh man, I've been reading up on the theories surrounding FFVIII and it is serious- also read somewhere that the writer for VIII did the story for X- which could explain this deepness that I am reading about. i've already posted in this thread but just so you know ff8's junction system was widely considered as the worst stat system in the entire ff series and one of the worst in general gaming
SUP JUNCTION 100 ULTIMA TO ATTACK AND KILL EVERYTHING STAY AT LEVEL 5 SO ALL MY BOSSES ARE EZPZ it wasn't even hard because there were ultima draw points everywhere which are unlimited too
in fact, the entire game's combat system sucked i killed ultimecia with like a level 25 squall and a level 8 selphie in my first playthrough aura + hero + invincible moon is the most hax thing ever

FF7- Was pretty good. I have yet to finish it cause im lazy and know the ending but was quite fun none the less(4th fav)
FF8- I find was the easiest of the final fantasies i played. I really like the system and the card game was pretty sick.(3rd fav)
FF9- I think I have more hours logged on this game than any game ever..I really liked the story and characters were the best compared to the other ones(Quina is AWESOME). Ozma is a hard little shit. Dissapointing that the card game is completely useless and shouldnt be there but oh well.(my favorite)
FF10- This one is easily the best with voice acting. blitzball was fun and I find the summoning was the best in this one than all the others since you can control Them. Plus some nice challenges at the end of the game with the dark summons n stuff (2nd favorite)
FF10-2- Played 2 hours and returned it(go die)
FF12- tried to get into it but never liked it all that much. If i were to play it again I would probably beat it just to beat it seeing how it was okayish but nothing great
FF13- beat it just to beat it. was pretty I HATE HOPE. I wanted to kill him so bad all the time...plus the summons are such a waste of time and are no good. Never used them.(sad panda)

This thread pisses me off more than any other thread on team liquid. It reminds me of how old I am. The OP's older brother must have brainwashed him into loving 10 because there is no way you can just skip over 8 and 9 with a single sentence while simultaneously showering ff10 with praise reserved for classic novels. 10 was the beginning of the decline of the FF series, if you believe that there is anything deep going on at all in 10 you probably think dog the bounty hunter should run for president. I really want to meet the people who think ff10 was good because it had voice acting... what do you sound like when you speak. Tidus and Yuna sounded like complete morons, Wakka and Lulu were god awful-- "ff10 was dope", you guys are dirtbags. Both 8 and 9 have earned more than just a 'silly little adventures'. If you got ff8 on release date you'd know that the first cut scene of ff8 is so crisp and beautiful compared to any other game at the time. If you don't mention the card game in your review of ff8, you suck. ff9 was a throwback to ff6 imo the way the characters split off from each other and did different things not always as group was immensely entertaining. Putting 9 back into a 'past world' as opposed to futuristic mechanical worlds in 7 and 8 was refreshing. The characters also had unique powers and purposes which was different than most recent previous ffs, its too bad the card game sucked in 9, the game play was awesome.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a flame war between ff6 and ff7 being the superior game (obviously everyone deep down knows its ff6)

I think it's rather interesting that most of the people in this thread have claimed that the initial title they played was their favorite. I grew up with friends who couldn't get over the greatness of VII and when I told them my first and favorite was IX I got beat up for it (metaphorically of course, but on the inside which hurts even more -tear-). Haha anyway I think this is why we see an abundance of people claiming that FFX and beyond were fascinating games to them. Clearly there's nothing wrong with that, they just didn't have the chance nor the privelege to grow up with the past titles like some of us did.

Well I will rank my FFs game 1: FF 6: This game pretty much taught me how to read. I loved the characters, the music, and the plot. This game is all around just amazing.
2: FF Tactics: the story, Gameplay, and job system makes the game number 2 for me, So many awesome things about this game. 3:FF7 4:FF4 5:FF9 6:FF Mystic quest 7: FF10 8: FF8 9: FF5 the rest are sort of whatever to me.
I really love the series the newer games really killed it for me. I grew up in the age of the amazing SNES RPGS Breath of Fire, Lufia, FF, Chrono Trigger, Secret of mana, Soul Blazer These games are what I played for hours and hours so I hope anyone that hasn't taken some time to go back and play the earlier games are really missing out.

I'm such a sick FFVIII fan, first FF I ever played, got instantly hooked... Man, that was back in '99 when I got it, should get back into it once again, been a few years since I played it the last time.

FF6 definitely stood out during the NES era of games. You could put so many hours into this one game. Loved all the characters. A favorite for me.

Ah, about time we got a Final Fantasy thread here
+ Show Spoiler [Wall of Text] +I got my first Final Fantasy game when i was around 8-10 i think, bought Final Fantay: Anthology that contained FF:IV and FF:V in a clothesstore that had a small area with video games lol. I loved FF:V, though i didn't like FF:IV that much (probably mainly cause i got stuck at a boss, can't remember what its name was), haven't beaten FF:V yet but i'll do it sooner or later. Got stuck at that big flying snake boss on the flying castle on my first playthrough. Later i played through again from scratch and stomped the boss handily, last thing i did on the save was escape from the castle and beat Gilgamesh using Galuf (I think that was his name lolol) then explore the area a bit. I later got FF:X and FF:X-2 which i both liked, though i liked FF:X-2 alot more for some reason. Remember getting stuck at the last boss in FF:X-2 cause everything was so fucking strong (including random fights). FF:X got me stuck when you faced that big flying dragon thingy on top of Cid's airship as the poison kept fucking me over(beat the boss once, but there were no save point after so i died to random mobs. Raged and didn't play FF:X since ). Lately my little brother whos like 9 played through the game and beat it, then he lectured me how i had to use Rikku to remove the poison at the boss(I had used antidotes) t_t I also enjoyed FF Tactics Advance and FF Tactics Advance DS ALOT, got stuck at the last boss on FFT:A and never bothered to try again. I don't know why i haven't played more FFT:ADS, i liked it very much but it felt like they didn't add enough options in the game (still can't name all your characters, all characters you have look the same etc). Though i should go play it again soon, it was a fun game and i never really beat it Final Fantasy XII was probably my favorite FF game i've played, it kept me entertained for very, very long (My save file is on 100 hours+ playtime and i haven't even done all the extra content after you beat the game). It had a really fun combat system, reminding me very much of many MMORPGs while having a single player touch to it. Also the gambits made it playable as having to pause the game every second to choose commands would have killed it for me ( But gambits also made it so you could afk train some monsters, like this one) Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was another favorite of mine, even though the game was extremely stale with you only being able to use 1 kind of normal attack (spells were useless if you don't include Cure, Life was only good for multiplayer). The game had good music, and a unique feel to it. Playing multiplayer with others was really bad since someone always had to carry that damn chalice. I tried Final Fantasy XI online once, and i didn't understand shit. Ended up deleting my characters+account without knowing i had to cancel my subscription first so my mother had to pay for it for like another 6 months before she realized and called customer support. LOL. TL;DR I love Final Fantasy :3

Pretty much everything after 9 was shit.
8 > 7 (fanboys rage more)
The stories were always overblown, but the gameplay was fun (in most of them, a bit too much grinding for levels in some of the earlier ones) and the music was some of the best in all of gaming.
I've been trying to find my version of Tactics for freaking ever and can't find the disc anywhere and my stupid ass laptop has an integrated graphics card so it can't run emulators.
*sigh*

has anyone here gotten the item King of the Jump Rope by doing 1000 jumps? I am going insane trying to do it. I can't get the beat. I wish I had a musician friend who could rock it for me.

Actually got bored recently and did single-character runs of FF1 and 4 (though farming for a ribbon at a crazy low drop chance was a bit annoying).
Overall, I'm a bit of a skeptic I suppose. 2 and 3 were decent, but had multiple annoying mechanics. The job system in 5 was interesting, but rather quickly made things too easy. 4 was solid all around, imo. And 10 and beyond have been horribly disappointing for me (Yes, I hated FFX...after hearing your main character be told for the 400th time 'Don't Cry' I just couldn't manage to care about anything that happened to him)
FF6 was the first the truly enveloped me...spent countless hours playing and replaying it when I was younger, and still occassionally go back to replay it. 7 was definitely solid for it's time, and though 8-9 were fairly decent, they failed to compare to 6-7...but then, so has everything else in the series.
Now that I think about it, guess I come off as the 'old schooler' but overall I've enjoyed most of the games in the series (including mystic quest, tactics, etc.). That said, I prefer the Dragon Warrior/Quest series (first 6). Ohnoes controversy!
Edit: Think I may actually go replay FF6...thread got me thinking about all the good times.

In no particular order...
FFVI - Story and gameplay depth combined to make this the greatest FF to date. Nerdchills just thinking about how well this game turned out. It should be the template for developing RPG games: without similar depth, your game will be meh.
I played VI first, followed by V. Enjoyed V, but still fell back to VI more. IV followed, and had the same problem. Both were still enjoyable however.
VII was ambitious, and delivered. Solid game and story, with some serious depth as well. VI to IX feel like the golden years of the franchise, dont they?
VIII was polished from a visual perspective at the time, and the story was intriguing, but the combat system felt/was flawed. Alot of ways to cheese it from memory.
IX was full of charm, and polish. My only complaint is that it would have benefited from an additional optional boss or two (Ozma was still challenging).
X was a fun change to new technology, and delivered well. It is not surprising that it was a commercial success; it was a good game. Penance killer signing in as well. For some reason however, after completing the game on my third attempt (Penance kill), I didn't feel compelled to do it ever again, unlike some of the older titles (VI, VII, IX).
X-2 had a fantastic combat system. If this could be ported onto some of the previous titles, wow. It was a shame its story was shit.
I've never got through XII. I've played it twice, both times to about 20-24 hours. The combat system felt too much like KotOR with the 'real time' thing, or the recently released DA2 with the tactics thing, which I just dont like. I should get that finished though.
Never played the MMO's or XIII.
In order of preference:
VI IX VII V X VIII IV
