OH, I remember, I quit after failing the opera scene time limit 3 times, the last time being when the clock ran out at the exact time I engaged the boss and I still lost.
Anyway, I had 8 for PC circa 2002. Bought it at Sam's Club of all places.

It's like the game doesn't actually get saved unless you return to the main menu or quit the game. Edit: The game crashes on disc 2 when you return to Balamb Garden to find Cid. When you head for the dormitory you encounter a Caterchipillar that can't be avoided. It seems if you attack it with Squall, the game freezes.

A shame you quit there, as the part between Terra transforming and the opera house is easily the worst part of the game. It's really only uphill from there. Well, maybe excluding the early World of Ruin where you might end up doing a lot of walking.

I feel that for FF8, you can just "play" the game without anyone's help (no asking for advices, no strategy guides), and your character will progress naturally. While I understand the leveling part is very counter-intuitive, unless you intentionally grind your levels you won't come to a point that it becomes extremely detrimental to your gameplay - all you need to do is to Junction correctly and you are good to go. The character progression in FF8 relies on Junction, and it's fairly intuitive once you get over the leveling thing. By the way, IIRC leveling up makes you able to Draw better magics. The issue I have with FF6 is that, first of all, your character progression is very murky and hard to control. You get a huge chunk of your stats from equipping Espers while leveling up, but you don't get all Espers at the beginning of the game and some are better than others. This, in my opinion, is similar to FF8's leveling system that you get punished for leveling. Beyond this, however, FF6 also has the problem that you can't really tell if your character needs Strength or Magic - this problem is particularly annoying for Sabin whose moves scale with Magic. And finally, FF6's final dungeon is quite difficult, requiring a split party and quite a bit of investment to develop all your characters (correctly). Don't get me wrong, FF6 is a great game, but I find it so annoying and frustrating to play that I will never play it twice. This is just a symptom of the older games - making games frustratingly difficult as a way to increase replayability. I think if FF6 is remade, its leveling system need to be completely revamped to modern standard. On the other hand, I feel FF5 (and 2/3, which IIRC has the same system) actually has the best character progression. You are offered a lot of choices on which Job to pursue, but there is no way to ruin your character because your stats growth is not linked to your Job when you level up. i found ff6 hard, but that made it more satisfying to build my sexy girls and locke into beasts (well, after getting the offering and dinosaur island lol). knowing that shit was once really hard but now terra and celes are making 7k sword hits is so sexy mmmm

I remember spending well over an hour (without getting lost) of random battles just to get to Terra and get my first espers. The random battles aren't hard, there's just a metric fuckload of them in that little rainy town.

That was the frustrating side of the game, but the rest of it is so beautifully executed that the ending theme still brings a tear to my eye.

For example, you can choose if you want to save the Al Bheds in that siege or not; doing so will make Rikku like you more and Wakka like you less.

Those things are the absolute worst. I wonder which retard's idea was it to add those things into the game. + Show Spoiler +

Depending how much the character likes you s/he can gain bonuses (or leave you?) For example, you can choose if you want to save the Al Bheds in that siege or not; doing so will make Rikku like you more and Wakka like you less. Why not just play Dragon Age, then? JRPGs are inheirently more scripted and linear than RPGs like that. It wouldn't be Final Fantasy if it wasn't a JRPG.

Now, imagine this. A Final Fantasy game with good characters that aren't simple caricatures. That'd be fucking amazing.

I'll still consider getting it though... after I finish playing Dimensions.

Unfortunately, I thought I was adhering to logic when, after having to turn into miniature versions to go through a tunnel, I stayed "Mini" for the duration of that entire quest through those tunnels, because surely coming out of Mini would mean you were huge compared to the size of the tunnel, right? Managing with just magic when I hadn't previously managed to buy extra spells for the characters that weren't already mages wasn't easy, because it meant there was little point turning my fighter into a black or red mage, seeing as hee'd have no spells. I didn't want to back-track to get the spells and in fact at that point I don't believe you can; you have to get a little further in the plot to get a ship and then you can head back to earlier areas. Turns out I later came to an area where we all had to turn into frogs to get through a drain pipe...but no worries about turning back into humans after you've gone through it. I guess that first tunnel was actually much larger than I thought and it was just a tiny passageway. >_< There I was thinking the game was (nicely) harder than they normally were... So far though, I'm enjoying it. It's halfway between 1 & 5, with a lot of jobs like in 5 but the classes are much simpler than in 5, though still have a little more to them than the jobs in FF1. I really love 2&5, but FF7 is still the best in my opinion (having played 1-2, 4-10 and some of 3), so unfortunately I can't give them my vote for "favourite" to help balance things out ![]() I really don't understand why 6 is not only sooo popular (I still like a lot though, unlike FF4) but more importantly, why anyone found it especially hard.
