I was pretty far into disc 2 from a game I started a couple of months ago, but then I got distracted by other things and couldn't play on a regular basis.
Besides, I always like starting over FF7, 8 & 9. It's just enjoyable. Thing is, if I get distracted again, I'll just not have time to finish and it'll keep going in a circle until I'm 50 or so.
Ah, the good Final Fantasy games!
@deth2munkies, I'm playing FFXIV. Started about a week ago. It's pretty good, heavily story-driven MMO. The combat can feel a little slow, but it's actually a nice break from the overly fast and cluttery combat system from GW2. So far I enjoy it, I'll probably sub the next month. You should check it out, it's only $30.

Playing Final Fantasy Dimensions with (what I think is) 720p glory has destroyed my ability to play on the GBA emulator.
I heard it doesn't look nice, the sprites are really ugly or something
yeah doesn't look that nice, portrait art and background on the other hand looks really nice but the character sprites make me cringe..
Wow, what the hell were they thinking ???
I'm still gonna get it, why?
because its my favorite game of the series, I love all the characters, Kefka is fucking awesome and it has the best music in the series, hell it even has the best victory fanfare.
I dunno, I think song for song, VIII has the best overall soundtrack, but I love Aria Di Mezzo Carattere, Terra's Theme, and the boss and Fanfare themes a ton. Still, the combat in 6 and the stat growth/esper system is even worse than the broken mess that is the junction system, not to mention the absurdly high random battle rate with a few bullshit monsters. I didn't ever finish it...
TBH, I really liked FFXII's real-time battle system the best in the series because you could do some really cool strategic things with it, but it was a fiddly pain in the ass a lot of the time.
Anyway, has anyone played XIV? What's the combat/progression system like?
once you've played FFIV:the after years no other game's encounter rate can ever annoy you, holy shit did the after years just jack up the encounter rate,in the final dungeon you could barely take like five steps before getting into a fight with those shitty enemies who only got more and more annoying as you progressed the long ass dungeon.

Didn't they up the encounter rate to near heart attack-inducing levels on the PSP release of FFIV? I remember hearing some people complain about how bad it was.

I was talking about the PSP version(since its the only remake that I played) only the after years was unbearable, the original game wasn't so bad.
I just picked up FFX / X-2 remastered and I'm...kind of mixed on it so far.
It's strange, because I played through the entire game just two years ago, but I'm only now starting to be annoyed at what everyone else has been annoyed with since FFX was first released. Like the voice acting, for one, and the dialogue. I just made it past the mandatory blitzball game, and I do remember it being particularly slow up to that point, so I think it'll pick up; if I remember correctly I wasn't too fond of the first act to begin with, even as a kid. But now Auron's here, so everything's going to be okay. I'm also loving the remastered soundtrack, with a few exceptions. I really like the Besaid Island track. The battle theme is as forgettable as it's always been, however.
Also, the thought of playing FFX-2 now as an adult makes me feel gross. Watching a half-naked 14 (16?) year old Rikku prance around is fine when you're 13, but when you're 21? I really don't know how I feel about that. That being said, FFX-2 was the first Final Fantasy I ever beat, so I do feel obligated to at least give it a try. Not to mention the battle system was insanely addictive, if I recall.
As for all the stuff I mentioned in my OP about FFX, I think now I was blowing the subtext out of proportion. It definitely is more about Tidus and Yuna than about patricide and parasitism, and I don't know why I ever thought the narrative was "insanely deep," as I put it. Rose tinted goggles, I guess, even though as I already said I played through the whole game two years ago or something. Who knows. I still think the story is good, just not as profound as I once did. If I had to choose my favorite FF game, FFX would hold a special place in my heart for it's incredible soundtrack and art design (and, again, a fine narrative), but I'd have to go with FFVI (FFX would be a close, close, close second, however).
Just started a new game of FF8. Watching the cinematic. It still looks fucking amazing, I remember how shocked I was by the giant gap between FF7 and FF8 in terms of graphics.
I tried to play like a year ago or something, but I got bored by the combat system. It is pretty flawed, but the rest of the game is so cool... I'm gonna see how far I get this time, haha.

Every time I think of FF8's experience system I facepalm myself. It is sooooooooooooooooooooo bad it makes 0 sense.
So FFVII is on sale now 66% off. Its the cheapest VII has been on steam so I guess what I wanted to ask is 'is VII a good place to start for someone who has never played a 3D FF game before?'
Should I get this, or play some other ones on a PS2 emulator first?
Its considered (one of) the best in the series. But I cant say too much about it cause I never played it(I know shame on me), only a friend showed it to me years ago. But I guess its easy to get into too with some Ingame tutorials. I think every FF had some form of tutorial except maybe the older ones.
But I can safely say that FF X is also a good one to start with FF in general. It was my first too. I was blown away by the graphics and the things you can do there.
Thanks for the recommendation. Though I just went ahead and bought it, 3,7 euro is not that much. Will try to play through all the (non-PS3) titles... I think I've got a long road ahead of me
I would argue FF7 is kind of old and it comes with the frustration of playing the old games. There are lots of traps, and lots of missible stuff which you cannot possibly find unless you consult a guide.

I think FF5/10 are the best entry level FF games.
That's weird, I think FF7 is pretty enjoyable. It does get a little clunky at first when you play on PC with a keyboard, but you get used to it. The "secrets" aren't obvious, and you're likely going to need to follow a guide to make sure you get it all.
I personally really like FF7, but I like FF9 better I think...
If only I had more time to play them! A life made of the legacy FF games... The dream!

Well I've played it quite a bit today and I can say I'm glad I bought it yesterday. It seems SE servers are retarded and cloud saving isn't working, though offline everything is working as it should. I can see how people say this game hasn't aged gracefully but I don't really mind, playing over the keyboard doesn't really make that much of a hassle though some of the key bindings and names are weird. But I guess the whole game feels kind of held back buy 1996 technology.
I've gotten up to floor 66/67 of the Shinra building after the plate falls (steam says I've been playing for 3-4 hours) and all in all I can say its been an interesting story and it seems to always make you try to get to that next savepoint before quitting the game. Out of the characters I like Aerith the most, seems like an interesting storyline and character, while Barret is meh.
