Tons of people who admired Jordan wore 23 as a kid, through college, and in the nba. And Kobe switched to 24, better or worse? I'm sure people have been gushing about Lebron's potential since he was a kid, so I'm not going to claim Lebron doesn't have a high opinion of himself. But usually when athletes have nicknames, they're cool/impressive sounding ones like "The Human Highlight Reel", "Black Mamba", "The Matrix", "Superman", "Superman (soulja boy version)", and not ones like, "The Custodian". And I'm not an expert at nba tattoos, but i'm sure there are some pretty self centered ones out there. "Chosen One" could be the worst, who knows, but it's kind of cherry picking. Edit: from the web ![]() The one example of Lebron's arrogance that I don't like, because it affects the game, is what in basketball they call a "heat check". Make a difficult shot. Think you have a hot hand. Try an even harder shot. Repeat until you start throwing up absurdly stupid shots way past the 3 point line while double covered and start airballing them. Otherwise, if anything, I think people ironically wanted Lebron to have MORE on-court self-confidence in the finals. God, thank you so much. Look at all this sense! The problem with sports is all of the self-righteous fans and sportswriters who can't stop their moral hand wringing over athletes that they deem are overpaid, arrogant and unaware. Has there ever been an athlete that wasn't arrogant? Grant Hill? AJ Green? The humble athlete is a false, masturbatory archetype that stems from the idea that "If I was in his position, I would play hard everyday! I would never take a play off! I would always show up and be clutch!" and "They play sports for a millions of dollars! I would do their job for 1/100th of what they earn." Stop talking about Lebron like he's the devil. As Charles Barkley famously said, he's not a role model, he does not have some weird social responsibility to be paragons of virtue. Michael Jordan belittled his teammates like an asshole (Bill Cartwright threatened to break his legs, so that he could never play ball again.) Kobe Bryant was accused of sexual assault and, is at best, an adulterer. Rick Barry was a racist and a horrible man. Leonard Little KILLED a person with his car! Ray Lewis was, somehow, involved in a stabbing murder. Josh Hamilton was a heroin addict. Shawn Merriman was a steroids abuser. This paragraph could go forever. Oh, one of the Jay Williams shot his limo driver - in the head - with a shotgun. Nobody cares. None of this matters because none of it happened on the field. Lebron is (as Naniwa would put it) the NBA finals loser. He played badly and did not live up to expectations. You could call him a failure because of this - that's all fine and appropriate. You can even hate him! But if it wasn't something that happened on the court, let it go.

Yes, there are a lot of arrogant players, but they face the same backlash when they fail to back it up as Lebron has, relative to what was said by or about them. There are also great players who don't display their arrogance, if they have it, to the degree Lebron has. For example, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Ray Allen, etc. It's possible to ignore what people are saying about you, even if it's positive, and let your game do your talking for you. If you choose not to go that route, then be ready to get blasted when you fail to live up to the expectations that you've built or allowed others to build. Lebron is not an innocent victim, he's reaped many rewards for all the attention and hype that has surrounded him up to this point, and the backlash he's getting now for falling far short of the expectations that come with all that is to be expected. With that said, there are a lot of people, including fans, critics, and other players, who are criticizing Lebron to an unnecessary and illogical degree. The moral high ground a lot of people have taken has been more than a little ridiculous at times, and a lot of it is coming for questionable reasons, i.e. to generate press, beat up on those who have fallen, etc. However, it's still not surprising because it's simply the other side of the coin that had people worshiping Lebron before and declaring him the best player ever before he had earned that distinction.

I want to help: I don't care about the personal lives of athletes. I don't care that they are (and I know the are) arrogant, selfish, cutthroat, unappreciative and disrespectful. I never said that I did, I only pointed out examples of "bad" athlete behavior. I do care when people moralize over athletes. It's tough to read and especially difficult to discuss. Because I care about this, I will take my valuable time to read and post my opinions - even up to 6 sentences. I guess that it's my opinion on other peoples' opinions. I also don't think I've been disguising my "my ego and intentions," so I don't really know where that came from.

When any competitor in any competition talks a lot of shit and can't back it up, I see that as reason to disrespect that person. You can be an arrogant douche if your on the court backs it up. You can't be an arrogant douche, fail to back it up, and then play the victim when people call you out on it. That's all there is to it. Fucking nut up or shut up. Back up your talk or get the hell out.

I don't really care about a player's personality or what they do off the field unless it's funny, or unless the athlete is some total motherfucker who kills dogs or something like Michael Vick. Any real fan knows that the the only "talking" that matters is done on the field, which is pretty much shown in this thread, since everyone is bashing LeBron for being arrogant even though many other great players are huge douches as well (like Michael Jordan), just because they have championships. I'm so sick of hearing about the Decision. It was almost a year ago, get over it. I feel like the Cleveland people have taken the wounded city thing too far, and that they should have shut up when the Cavs turtled in their first game against LeBron and the Heat in December. I don't really understand why you quote me here. I have not once in this forum talked about "The Decision" or the poor city of Cleveland. And saying that someone with that kind of tattoo on his back is self-absorbed is a pretty safe bet. Of course it doesn't matter in the end, since the "talking" is done on the field, but I did not say anything about any of that. Just because I don't root for LeBron doesn't mean I want him to fail or that I hate him.

I hope he doesnt win a championship at least until after next season.

He's the best. Yes, he makes good points in the article but he can't seem to really separate the "character" from the man. Also, I doubt most people would even agree with Poz's caveat: I don't HATE LeBron James, the person, of course not. He has brought me great joy as a sports fan. I wish him all the happiness he can find in life. Ultimately, he concludes that he roots against Lebron because it feels good, and that's okay! Not so much a counter-piece as one to condemn the shortsighted reader and writer: Shoals at Deadspin. God, I miss FreeDarko =(
