Has LeBron hurt himself publicly with his awful PR skills, shady set of advisers, and self-entitled attitude? Oh yes. However, that's no excuse for the media to continually pigeonhole his game with nonstop comparisons to all-time great players. The amount of scrutiny he has received is mind-blowing.

That same scrutiny that led to people calling him an NBA godsend is now leading people to brand him as the most hated athlete on earth. Is it fair? That's up for each person to decide for themselves, but that's how fame works. It can be great and it can be terrible. He's been largely experiencing the great parts up until now, but his repeated poor PR decisions, generally arrogant attitude and underperforming in the Finals have now landed him in the terrible part. It's the price that most people in his position will face at some point, and the public's reaction is unsurprising to say the least. I didn't see him complaining about the attention and scrutiny he gets back when he was the NBA's messiah, so he doesn't get to complain about it now just because it's gone sour.

The celebration may have been the Heat organization's idea, but the Heat organization wasn't the person standing up there going "not 1, not 2, not 3... championships." I couldn't give less of a fuck if they wanna throw a shitty party. It's the self-aggrandizement that I have a problem with. Jason Terry getting a tattoo of the trophy is hardly on the same level. That's as much a [weird] self-motivational tool as it is anything else. It's not like he was running around saying he deserved to have the trophy, etc. And casual fans see Terry in a better light because he went through the crucible of losing in the Finals in '06 and now he's come back and won it--it's a redemption story, and it's cute, and he played his ass off in the series. I don't really get what your problem is with Simmons. He writes from the fan perspective. Nobody claims that he's an expert on the technical aspects of basketball.

If you listen to his podcasts with Klosterman or Lebatard, he always sounds like dummy - they can't help but talk down to him. He may really lack critical-thinking skills. Grantland is fantasic, though. I don't listen to his podcasts because I can't stand his voice :/ On June 17 2011 06:37 Ace wrote: Simmons also doesn't really have in depth knowledge about what happens on the court. He still thinks the zone defense caused Miami tons of trouble, even though Wade, Bosh and even Lebron's passing carved it up a bunch of times. Miami actually went on some brutal runs when Dallas played zone. The zone defense DID cause them trouble, though, at times. IIRC Carlisle would switch to a zone, and if it was working he would leave them in it, but if it didn't work they'd switch right back out. I would support the hypothesis that it was more the constant switching than it was the zone defense specifically that caused them trouble, though.

The trouble was that Lebron's only two low post "moves" are to forearm shove and do that waist hook thing, so the Mavs could guard him with Deshawn Stevenson, Jason Kidd and JJ Barea.

Everytime they switched Miami looked clueless for a few possessions. I could be wrong but I think Dallas is the first team ton win an NBA championship while using so much zone defense. They didn't do it as much against Miami, but throughout the playoffs it's a weapon they used really well. Props to Carlisle for having the guts to try it.

Grats to Dirk and the Mavs -- I haven't been that excited and happy about a series in a long, long time.

It was more like a strategy to disrupt LeBron and Wade's games, and you could tell the Mavs employed it at the right times. I think LeBron himself said that zone messed up his flow often. Carlisle made sure to use it at the best, ideal times. A nice analysis of the zone defense: http://nbaplaybook.com/2011/06/13/with-the-zone-its-all-about-timing/#more-15029 Lets not how forget how effective running a zone is at improving your own offensive performance. There is a reason the team of old guys at the YMCA plays zone all the time: You use less energy playing zone. Zones also help to hide your worse defensive players. If the Bulls ran a zone they could have kept Korver and Boozer in games longer.
