All I get is buying, doing a mission (finding some books) and him telling me about the guild. Also I don't have any quest about finding Esbern, nor do I get one from Delphine. Anyone know what I can do to progress? Well I was already in the thieves guild before that quest and it didn't affect it. So you can load a save where you are not in the guild yet and see if that works out. I know during my main quest at one point I had to finish a side quest I had started to free a npc up to continue the main quest. (Eg, when I talked to him he only had option to continue side quest until I finished it, then I could talk about main quest) I wonder though, should I have a quest prompting me to talk to him in the first place? That I got from Delphine? Because I found it odd that I didn't get any follow up quest rom her, only "talk to Brynjolf"?

What do you guys think is the best way to get through the game with the highest difficulty?

There are a lot of good ways to get through the game, even on highest difficulty. As long as you play smart, don't spread your perks/skill-ups too thinly, and always keep an eye out for gear, you'll be fine.
The beauty of Elder Scrolls games is that there is no best way to play.

+ Show Spoiler +Just got past this part. Yes, it is weird. He wants you to do this stealing shit and my good paladin didn't want anything to do with it but I eventually broke down and tried it because I wanted to progress the story. At least attempt to steal the item from the chest. If you fail, just pay the small bounty and go back to talk to the man. He'll say he still thinks you got what it takes and wants you to find him at Something Flagon. The quest arrow points you there. At the Something Flagon is a shopkeep who tells you where Esbern is. You can ignore the dude who got you down there from here on out because his quests are not main story arc.

Also, using invisibility to avoid 99% of the enemies would technically be the best way of 'getting through'

So why can't I put anything in my right hand?
|
So I'm playing through as a mage. My plan is to kind of start out good, and eventually go mad with power/corruption. I use pretty much purely lighting spells to kill stuff, and I got some really nice gear from the magic college quests. I've got the archmage's robes and some mask called "morokei" or something like that.
How should I go about getting better mage items? I'm having trouble with enchanting as I have a lot of items with nice mage stats that I can't seem to disenchant. How should I maximize my killing potential via items?

Not sure if you're referring to my mid life crisis were i was going to reroll again and start a paladin type character(1h weaps/resto/heavy armor) That was me. If so you're welcome! If not then I apologize for thinking it was referring to me
I started the pally last night and am really liking it. Haven't even done the dragons claw quest yet and am already level 5.

Haha, this is hilarious. As on of the guys says in the comments, elderscrolls is definitely powergamer friendly :D.

Mage-centric items really focus on conserving Magicka rather than dealing more damage. You need to shell out for higher level spells to increase your killing potential. Meanwhile your items will lower the cost so you can spam spells more effectively. In addition you can get yourself a really nice staff (Sanguine Rose to summon a tank/Wabbajack for hilarity/Standard damage staff) for when you are out of Magicka and need to lay down the law.
So if you're looking for outlets for your money, spend it on Destruction training if you really need more killing power. And keep an eye out for the really kickass spells.

Someone should make a mod that + Show Spoiler +lets you do your dragon shouts in werewolf form, and make the sound files for it a scooby doo version of the shouts, like "roos roh rah!" I think it would be hilarious

+ Show Spoiler +The questline involves talking to the bartender to learn about Esbern. The correct response is to bribe him with gold (150 I think) and he'll start talking.

+ Show Spoiler +Kill one from each species. When you search their body for the first time, you will get the option to extract their blood or to search the body.

Spells are available based on your skill in that tree. If you are just a weak mage, they will not offer you the higher end spells until you level up that skill. Once you get to about 95 skill in a certain tree, you do a Mastery Quest to gain access to the final "Master" levels of those quests.
