On December 17 2010 04:12 Jonas ![]() Does this game seem exactly like "N-game" for anyone else except with different graphics? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIvFmPPT2sE Yes, a lot of other people have said that. Exactly the same? No. Similar? Yes. There's nothing wrong with it being similar, since N was a challenging game, so why wouldn't you want more of something that is challenging, especially with better graphics, faster pace, and a lot of other improvements on a genre of game that has an appeal for people who love side-scrolling platformers?

I disagree that this game has unfair difficulty, though. I've died a lot playing this game, and I rarely felt like the deaths were unfair (except the times where my computer would make the game skip frames and Meat Boy would fall through platforms, that definitely wasn't my fault). What exactly about the hitboxes did you find unintuitive?

It doesn't do anything rock-solid perfect and it's dreadfully simple for a modern platformer. "It's supposed be a send-off to the eight-bit era." Which would be fine if it took the eight-bit model and did something new or interesting with it. Stacking the difficulty against the player in an unfair manner (the hitboxes in the game are simply stacked against the player) and turning it into a bite-sized time trial battle didn't do that for me. I know I'm the only person on the planet who played Henry Hatsworth, but I'll be damned before I say Super Meat Boy did anything better than Hatsworth did. And the reviews of that game were pretty middling (ironically because people thought the game's difficulty curve ramped up too quickly). Henry Hatsworth was my favorite game last year. I hope Monster Tale turns out good. Most reviews complained about it being too hard, pretty annoying.

It doesn't really do anything that hasn't been done before, it's simply a refinement of things pioneered by other games. I disagree that this game has unfair difficulty, though. What exactly about the hitboxes did you find unintuitive? The game's grid-based level design would lead you to believe that you can't die if you're standing in the adjacent one-by-one square. That's not the case. Take saw blade launchers. The Saw Blade hitbox is larger than a one-by-one block. So you can die if you're standing on the opposite side of a saw blade as it's firing. You can die from a saw blade if you're standing on a platform that's a block above the line of fire. Hell, you can die from touching a saw launcher even if it isn't armed. I haven't played a lot of bullet hell shooters, but my understanding is that they do it right. The hitbox is much, much smaller than the player. That way, there's no doubt if the player screwed up. I have no problem with dying, but death from a single pixel is definitely frustrating. On December 17 2010 07:55 HenL wrote: Henry Hatsworth was my favorite game last year. Not sure if the Tamagotchi thing is up my alley, but I'm definitely giving it an impulse buy if I hear good enough things about it. What makes it so good imo, is the fact that it doesn't try to do anything new, or try to be fancy with any gimmicks or nice graphics or whatever new games try to do this day and age, it's just a solid platformer. Whether or not I think the game is top-flight or not, I definitely agree that it has a reason to exist. Definitely has an audience, definite fits a niche. Worthy addition to 2010's gaming library.
