I don't really understand the recent hype for these platformer games.
One of the Indie packs I bought during the last holiday sale included VVVVV, which had recommendations and high ratings everywhere. So I played it, expecting something awesome after all the praise - and all I got was a pretty bland platformer. Jumping, avoiding, some puzzle-esque things ... that's it. Sure, that can be fun - for about 5 minutes.
I'm not saying that platformers can't be fun, I've enjoyed playing them every now and then, but especially SMB is hailed as if it revolutionized PC gaming when all you do is jump around and avoid death traps.

SMB gets all the hype it deserves. It it is pure platforming bliss distilled to its essence. All of the trimmings that have bloated the genre over the years are absent here. What you are left with is 100% fine-tuned platforming goodness, which many old school gamers crave from the NES era of gaming.

it's not about being some super innovative genre redefining game
it goes back to nes style platforming being all about timing and precision and being brutally hard, and it does it in a completely refined way with excellent controls and excellent level design.
if you don't like that fair enough. I saw someone call the genre "frustration platformer" once and I think that fits pretty well, and it's by far the best one out there. jumper, iwbtg, vvvvvv are all awesome but they can't hold a candle to smb imo

Dunno, sounds like platformers, or at least "pure" platformers, just aren't exactly your cup of tea. Both VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy are in my top 5 of the year but there's nothing really fancy about either of them. They are just very well made, challenging and fun to play.

This game has been all the rage among my friends, and since I didn't pick it up at the same time as them, I have been issued a challenge. For my birthday, Dec. 23rd, I will be receiving, installing, and playing Super Meat Boy for the first time... attempting to 100% the game in either one sitting (save food/bathroom/birthday wishes) or before Christmas day. In spirit of giving, I decided that if I'm really going to go through with this, I might as well let anyone join me in my pain and anguish via stream. I'm no entertainer or that interesting of a person so don't expect too much. If you're bored, watch me die a bunch. A TL audience is as good as I can hope for.
So without further ado... + Show Spoiler +
I'm going to try to start right on midnight (of the 23rd EST) to give myself the most time. Hope I know what I'm getting myself into.
+ Show Spoiler +Also, how do you get images to conform to TL width limitations? Edit: Oh look at that, it conformed. Didn't even have to ask. Go figure.

You have absolutely no fucking clue what you're getting yourself into.

Worst case scenario: I cripple my hands for a week, give up, go to a bar to reminisce about my stupidity! Worth it! Right? .... right?

attempting to 100% the game in either one sitting
Plain Impossible, even if your an Uber l337 platforme gamer it will take you way more than 10-15h to complete the game.
Maybe you should set yourself a more realistic goal in finishing the light world in one sitting.
I have bought a Logitech controller and the game on my steam account yesterday (was playing from another computer) and finished 3/4 of light world, 3-4 character and a few warp zone.
I'm going for 100% but I don't think I'll get it before at least 10k death.
On a side note if you can get a XBOX controller, go for it, the R2 button on logitech is hard to press and is hurting your hand after a while.

I don't really understand the recent hype for these RTS games.
One of these games I bought during the last holiday sale included StarCraft 2, which had recommendations and high ratings everywhere. So I played it, expecting something awesome after all the praise - and all I got was a pretty bland RTS. Mining, scouting, some micro things ... that's it. Sure, that can be fun - for about 5 minutes.
I'm not saying that rts can't be fun, I've enjoyed playing them every now and then, but especially StarCraft 2 is hailed as if it revolutionized PC gaming when all you do is click around and kill your enemy before they do to you.

Well played.

Different games for different folks. I wouldn't say it's revolutionized anything. However it has the formula of it's genre down pat. Much like other people say about SC2.
Loving Super Meat Boy. Got to light world 2 last night and had a lot of fun. It's like N+ but way better in characters, music and controls.

This game is horrid....
I really like the levels, and I enjoy platformers...But it's so god damn unresponsive when I hit the keys that I have to rage quit after five minutes of playing. 95% of the times I've died have been from a refusal for the game to recognize I've hit the space bar (my keyboard is fine in other games).

Never had that problem. Try running the game in windowed mode.

For some reason, I haven't noticed it since. Maybe I got better or maybe the later levels don't need it as much? Dunno.

^This
It's almost exclusively when I'm jumping off of walls.
|
Ah, well ya, I've done that sometimes. I probably just press the button before I actually hit the wall, but I think I actually did it when I was on it. Also spacebar is a pretty horrible key to use for jump IMO, can try remapping it to see if that helps.

God damn fuck the first boss, going to take me a while I think! (taking a break)
Really enjoying this game though. Only £3! <3
