Although I think Unburial Rites is probably the strongest way to build control right now, straight U/W is a fair amount stronger than straight U/B. If you're playing U/B you're either playing Tezzeret, which is inconsistent, or just straight control which trades Day/Gideon/ORing for BSZ/Lilliana/Doom Blade. It does gain Forbidden Alchemy, but overall those white cards are better, and white has access to MUCH better hate cards including Revoke and Timely Reinforcements, and the new graveyard removal spell. White is just in a much better place right now. UW is not UBW, Unburial Rites in a control shell with the White hate cards like you mentioned is just better than any other control deck right now, the match up is like 8-2 in your favor. As for UB vs. UW, from what I have seen, they both seem pretty bad regardless, but then again I am running UBW. As for this Geth's Verdict business, no thanks. I rather have smoother mana at 3 with Tribute to Hunger and net some life out of it. After looking through the Indy lists more closely, people are still stuck on the I am too good to play more than 3 Days mentality. People also forgot that Spellskite just straights up hoses a lot of decks.

I don't know anyone around me that plays, so I don't really want to invest in cards just yet. Duels of the Planeswalkers is a fine way to start Magic. My only gripes with the game is that there are very few ways to customize your deck.

Actually, I can see it being a little fast for new players - like when a spell in resolving and the magical spiral thingy is like spiraling and the meter is running down. Makes me nervous man. That being said, it isn't really the whole Magic experience. You pick up the rules of the game a bit faster but if you can find a store with some nice dudes to help, that'll be good too.

Even if it did, Whipflare seems pretty bad. It doesn't kill Berserker or a Noble with 2+ counters. Those are the deck's two most relevant creatures, and Whipflare is just dead vs everything else besides tokens, so I don't see the point of it.

You will only be able to edict again WITH Liliana dying on the third turn she was out. You have to wait 4 turns if you want her to live. If they have even one evasive creature (inkmoth) she will not do anything more than edict. Geths verdict costs 2 instead of 3 which makes it faster. One is definitely not strictly better than the other First of all, you wouldn't tap you to play liliana just to edict if they had a inkmoth most of the time. If they play T3 geist then sure, play liliana and edict. And then even if they do kill it off with inkmoth you traded 1 for 1 but they spent their turn killing it and you are now up tempo. Secondly, the discard ability is not weak, especially when your deck is built to abuse it with things like snapcaster, thinktwice, sun titan, unburial rites, forbidden alchemy etc. Saying things like "At maximum you will get 2 edicts out of her, over 3 turns" is just ridiculous. I'd say that's more on average, which is very good. Also, please stop comparing a planeswalker to a spell. Sure, liliana isn't "strictly better" than geth's verdict. Off course she isnt, they are different types of cards. Jace, the Mind Sculptor also isn't "strictly better" than unsummon. That doesn't mean one of them isn't MUCH better.

I'd like to know about such a thing as well. It's not really a stream but channel fireball has great draft videos and general high level stuff.

Also LSV's review of Olivia Voldaren in Limited, whom I still think is the best card in Limited. Limited: 5.0 Is this really necessary? Only being multicolor keeps her from supplanting Devil’s Play as the best card in the set, and even then she just might take the cake. I’ve played both with and against Olivia, and if she survives, she’s actually just straight up unbeatable. If you are either color, even if it’s pack 3, slam her, and if you aren’t either, consider switching.

Some guy passed a Skaab Ruinator for a Foil Grim-grin, and while he's a better man than me, I would have taken the money and ran. Also LSV's review of Olivia Voldaren in Limited, whom I still think is the best card in Limited. Hopefully the pick will never come up, but I would take Olivia every time because she's way more fun. I'm pretty sure Devil's Play is better p1p1 though since it doesn't put you into two colors.

That being said, you'll probably end up with a few of Geistflames, Harvest Pyres, Brimstone Volleys, Dead Weights, Victim of the Nights. Realistically, it's probably fine. I'd first pack first pick her every day all day.

Start with reading Daily MTG, GatheringMagic, and ChannelFireball, and get Magic Workstation, play around with it in Standard Constructed games for a little while. That will give you a comprehensive knowledge of the metagame, a window into how top players think, and a great point to start investing.

The format is slow enough that it's not going to be as major an issue as it was in something like M12 where you had to rely on Rampant Growth/Manalith which sucked up T2/3 which were extremely important facing down a lightning fast aggro deck.

In the worst case scenario, you might be passed very few B/R playables and your 2nd and 3rd pack might just not have the supporting bombs. I'd first pack first pick her every day all day. Opened her in sealed, have the experience to say she is the best card in limited in this set. They don't have an answer for her? you win....they have an answer? dig for Unburial rights and still win.

I guess it's not all that different from Dispense Justice in SOM.
