That's where you're wrong. The endgame of D2 was trading, hacking items, and dick measuring.
And that's what made D2 awesome. (At least for me)

You never NEEDED baal, especially not for items, only for leveling.

Anybody else feels that there are too few characters for a 2011 game? I mean I know they will add them in expansions but just 5...?
|
Meh, 5 really well refined characters is better than 8 shoddy ones.
|
The dolls were to force "melee" characters to diversify their tactics.... Much the same with Oblivion Knights with their Iron Maidens.
The goal was to make it so that Melee classes wouldn't just charge into the fray mindlessly.
Stop whining about the dolls just because you have no imagination.

I don't think a hack'n'slash game like Diablo can be more diverse than having a few dungeons that you can run through all the time. Of course Blizzard could release new ones in D3 on a regular basis to keep people entertained, but i don't think they'd bother with that to be honest.
I'll be looking forward to PvPing in D3 though, it will be so much fun :D

It's the same number as Diablo 2 is it not? Amazon (Demon Hunter) Paladin (Monk) Necromancer (Witch Doctor) Sorceress (Wizard) Barbarian (Barbarian lol)
I think this is fine as the characters will not be one-dimensional. I can already see that each class will have different skill paths like they did in Diablo II. - The Monk clearly can focus on either staff or fisticuffs. He can also DPS, damage, or probably use auras. I bet Monks could even tank.
- Demon Hunter can focus on damage or DPS but is ranged. I'm sure there are other cute skills involved.
- Witch Doctor seems to shift focus between debuff spells and damage spells.
- The Wizard is a mixed bag like the Sorceress and will probably have ranged and area attacks along with elemental focuses.
- The Barbarian will obviously be the exact same.
It's not unbelievable that one could have several of the same character class in a party and each could have very different focuses and roles. This what adds variety to the game for parties and for individual players. You don't need 3 more classes or they would dilute the skills of the existing ones.

i mean thats what was so good about diablo 2 design. each character could be built in so many completely different ways that they didnt need to have like 12 classes. they essentially have more than that that the player gets to discover and experiment with on their own.

Stop whining about the dolls just because you have no imagination. Yeah. Getting cursed mid-whirlwind and getting raped in 0.1 in HC - I'm close minded. Whirlwinding trough enemys, 8 dolls appear out of thin air(sick ms), getting raped in 0.4 sec - I'm close minded.
That was just poor game design, not players being close minded. Having enemies that kill you instantly, regardless of your hp, items, resistances or actual skill, is bad game design.

i agree but then again you were not supposed to be ww'ing in chaos sanctuary xD but then again putting IM in there is one of the stupidiest thing ever in D2.Its funny that they finally realized that and removed IM from Oblivion Knights last patch (lol after over 10years....)
one thing that makes D2 so exciting and tense is what u mentioned tho... one mis-step'd could screw you up in HC xD like Act3 Hell Ruined Temple, sometimes u wont even get a chance to save&exit from Battlemaid Sarina whose usually spawns with Extra Fast, Extra Strong, Aura Enchanted and w/e + her minions surrounded you in 1second

You mean like, we'll actually get to play the game?!?!? O:

Playing the Monk first. Love the idea of taking on Demons with Kung Fu.

I'm looking forward to the demon hunter ^_^
What is going on with the beta? Last I heard they were doing a very small, hard to get into (ie you gotta know people at Blizz) beta now, or soonish, then a bigger open one later in the year...

When I played diablo 2, I first made 3 or 4 generic classes, like everyone else. I made a smiter, a summon necro, a javazon, and a whirly barb. In fact whenever I would start up again I would always start with one of those characters so I could easily get nice loot. But the thing that really made it great was the odd characters I made. I once made a leap attack barbarian, who did a calculated 60k truedamage. I also made a curse necromancer based on confusing mass crowds, then killing a few with item spells (damaging auras work wonders) and then when a few are dead decrepify the crowd and corpse explode a few. The best success, I would say was a zeal sorceress. It was extremely gear reliant, you use a sword that grants zeal, and other items to increase lightning and fire damage as well as apply auras, get lightning and fire mastery all the way up and item applied damage auras skyrocketed, effectively making your zeal more like a faster version of vengeance. I hope that diablo 3's talent system allows for odd classes like I just mentioned.
