The doll does damage when he dies. You can "skill" them by not killing them. The game becomes hard in hell, specially in 8 players game. So if you know your charactere doesn't have 3000 HP, don't go there alone and don't kill em. I'm playing D2C in hell right now, have a barb lvl 78 and an ama lvl 62 both in hell. If you are very carefull and you know what you're doing, the hardcore mode doesn't seem hard at all. I want 1-shot dead monsters, because, I personally think that this kind of feature increase the skill gap at high level.

I don't. I stopped playing median XL when they added those 1 shot death witches. And I wouldn't play a game with such annoying monsters.
Diablo 2 is so much fun in normal, too easy in nightmare for 95% of characters, and extremely boring in hell (immunities, ridiculous monster health, dodging and damage, especially for melee characters). It's not particularly difficult if you know what you're doing. But it isn't fun either.
The only way around it is to plan your character from the start or gear up your character with MF chars or such... not much fun. Otherwise, good luck hitting anything (yes, you need dex when you don't gear up...there goes your 3k HP).
I've made like 2-300 Diablo 2 characters, and it's always the same story. Get to hell, then if you don't have a cookie cutter build OR even with a cookie cutter build, if you're melee : good luck having fun. Round around forever doing barely any damage to monsters. Woo! Fun!
I truly hope Diablo 3 will not fall victim to the same fate, and from the developers' comments, they definitely know about it. It didn't prevent me from enjoying D2 for years, but it lowered it in my eyes.
Challenge is fun. Monsters with ridiculous stats are not. Give me the hardest game in the world and I'll enjoy it, as long as it's fair and fun. I wouldn't mind monsters having very high HP and damage (but not 1 hit kill damage unless you are underleveled), if they didn't dodge 90% of my attacks or if half the monsters in the world weren't immune to my main attacks. making me rely on secondary attacks that take 3 times as long to kill with.
Diablo 2 was so much better before 1.10, it's ridiculous. Actually, it was even better in Classic. When you didn't need to max vitality to survive; when dex and str stats mattered. You could even branch out without synergies and skills like Nova were still useful. Rares? Woot, no runewords or elite uniques to make everyone carbon copies of each other!
Anyway, my hope is that Diablo 3 will be a similar experience to the original Diablo 2.

Fun! Ignore target defence? sigma_sigma. Then just switch to something with -to target defence per hit whenever you fight a champion or stronger monster if you can't bother putting any points into anything other than vitality.
Barbs have concentration and Paladins have vengeance and hammers for immune monsters. Every once in a while a barb will meet a physical and magic immune monster and either have to kill it in 20 minutes with poison to negate regen or run. This is rather flawed. What else needs to bother with immunities? Sorcs and druids should have to spec in three skills anyways. What is a character that uses the same moves from level 1 to level 99? Their skills do the most damage anyways, why do you need to max synergies? Do you need to 1 shot everything to have fun?
People don't play the game the way it's meant to be played and then complain that there's no way to beat it.

Anyway, my hope is that Diablo 3 will be a similar experience to the original Diablo 2. well they really killed the melee classes imo, not as much power for sure. i want the game to be hard, imo running away from a monster from fear of it 1 hitting you is just stupid. i dont want to have to run from any monster, maybe a pack to get position or something but dolls are op as hell. torchlight has a similar problem in a dark zealot that does mass critical damage. i had to lvl to 40 before facing these level 25s, i had pretty amazing gear in this game and i still almost died several times. point being that if i wasnt super over level i die in 1 hit. same flaw thats in diablo 2. there is no reason a level 85 in nightmare full resists 2k+ health should die to 1 exploding doll.

To me, hell was not supposed to be where you could just mess around. I liked it because it was that hard. I thought it was correct to make hell so hard that you definitely needed the correct gear, or else you just get wrecked. Nightmare was where the difficulty ramped up but you could still have fun. For hell, the fact that the game forced you to plan your way around it was the right way to design it. Otherwise, the difficulty levels would just be for show, like most other games.
Also, about the souls, they are the only monster in the game I would say was overpowered but still not wrong. They literally can stop you from getting through an area but they added the correct kind of excitement to the game. Their damage just needed to be nerfed. Dolls were hard, but they never stopped you from getting through that area. Souls on the other hand can shred apart an 8 player party from off the screen. Multiple-shot, lightning enchanted, cold enchanted, conviction combo? With a pack of fanatic oblivion knights or frost archers nearby? Yeah, time to leave that game and make a new one. That's poor design/balancing.

Souls are brutal and so are the snakes in Nihlathak's temple. Other than that nothing in the game is really challenging.

Is there any way to estimate what the system requirments will be for D3? Like if you can run SC2 pretty well on medium setting you'll be ok?
I'm thinking of buying a new laptop and I would really like to run D3 on it without overinvesting into it. SC2 is pretty much the most graphic heavy game I own and except for D3 I don't plan to change that anytime soon.
Thanks!
|
I imagine D3 and SC2 will have similar requirements. In any case, Blizzard is pretty big on making their graphics scale down to a wide range of machines.
|
The only thing that killed Diablo 2 for me was the fact that "endgame" consisted of non-stop Baal runs. Sure you could do other things, but everything you needed in the game had a higher drop rate at Baal then anything else. If Blizzard is able to diversify the end game content, D3 will already be ten times better.

2 is kind of drawn out, but interesting, and plundering through all the tombs in search of the real one is probably the best ~2 hours in the entire game.
You know if you look at the symbols in the book in the quest log and compare to the symbols on the grave's you can plunder 1 grave instead of 7 xD Good experience though, I recommend it.
