This knowledge cheapens any form of competition I see right now, no matter how much I try to enjoy the games
Then don't watch the games...
I don't get this. Are you saying that because the best of the best of the best aren't playing, it is not worth watching?
If you really believe that why watch?

I'm sure the great BW players would probably do great - never watched enough BW to comment really. As long as SC2 games are entertaining I don't really care - I had a blast watching Thorzain vs MC (most recent ones that come to mind at least) with my friends and the fact that a great BW player could theoretically could take them apart does little to detract from that for me.

Now that was an elephant that really needed to be addressed, good work!

It would help to read the article before trying to poke holes in his argument.
Unfortunately I don't think any of the top tier BW players will switch over in the near future, as it would be a stupid decision financially. Until then, this topic will not have an answer. Having been around BW for a very, very long time, I think most of the regular proleague guys would immediately rise to the top. Flash in particular would be remarkable at SC2, in my opinion.

Awesome read. Very interesting and very thought provoking.

LOL no
The article is correct however. The best RTS players in the world will continue to play Broodwar for years to come because of the money and the fringe a-team players will go to sc2 for the exact same reason.

Definitely interesting, and I think you make a lot of good points, but I remain unconvinced that a bunch of BW pros will switch in and just take over the scene.
Like Datum said, the people you mention who would switch and destroy the scene are literally the best players in the world for BW (Flash, Jaedong, Bisu...). That doesn't mean that all really good BW pros will switch and take over the SC2 scene.
But, I guess we'll see if/when they decide to switch. I'm just not a fan of making sweeping predictions like that with precious few data to go on.

Really interesting post, can't help but agree about JD and Flash. I think it will be great for e-sports when that level of player moves from BW into SC2, increasing the competition for a game which clearly has a larger audience right now.

Oh my god an editorial with fact checking? AND statistics?!?!?
|
This is awesome. I really love this and will probably read it another couple of times over the next week.
|
i feel the game is still being explored. The longer the game explored the players with the better mechanics will do better.
Also there are a lot of times where players have to guess to stay alive.

I am saying that there are 300 current pros and semi-pros that have the potential to come in and dominate SC2 at any moment, with a latency of a few months from the day they switch. Among this group there are a notable few that CRUSH any other players in terms of raw talent and/or work ethic and/or ability to learn. This knowledge cheapens any form of competition I see right now, no matter how much I try to enjoy the games.
this part does not make any sense whatsoever. i can just say there are thousands of people in the world that has the POTENTIAL to crush anyone in broodwar, and that just cheapens any form of competition i see.

very good read....i think exactly the same way

great read. my thoughts exactly. the day flash and JD switch over.. shit will hit the fan.

Brilliantly written article sir.

I have to agree with this article. So often I just can't help but wish Jadeong would come into SC2 and show everyone how to play. But hey, I more or less stopped watching SC2 and went back to BW, so maybe we're the exceptions.
|
Agree with the comments above me: not a ground-breaking thesis, but very well written and presented. I love the "Cod of War" pic.
The Starcraft 2 scene is still young. Compare it to the BW scene at a similarly early stage in its history--the game and its proscene have yet to develop. I, for one, anticipate the time when SC1 pros will not be able to switch over and dominate the game, because it will have become as developed and specialized as BW is now.

Excellent. Hotbid's point about work ethic and focus reminds me of professional golf where Tiger Woods is the best not because of his physical abilities or even his huge talent, but moreso because of his ridiculous work ethic and mental focus. Mickelson is often touted as being a better raw talent but his profession was never always his #1 priority.

Can't wait till JD comes over, hopefully talks of imbalance will lessen when he shows zergs how to play SC2.

He didn't just say it, he's talking about the A team pro BW players who he just spent an entire article establishing as having a better work ethic and establishing that they would crush SC2 players within a short timespan.
