oooooh, he was talking about Numy's post indeed. I thought the innitial quote was this one from 1-2 days ago (and somehow thought Sent included Bake as well):

since it was Sent arguing with him for the longest time. Curse you, typing and reading on a phone at 4am in the morning. If he was talking about Numy's post, and Numy agreed (hopefully) that Nise looks just way better I guess it was out of context? I mean there's really no way to dispute the fact that SHAFT started pouring money into the monogatari series post Bakemonogatari lol.

In other news I've been power watching Bakuman. Pretty fun series. My only issue is the quality of female cast is quite lacking and I can't handle the "romance" with Hayamins character. Do love me the Tomboy girl though. She feels rather real and nice, just a pity she takes a backseat in later season. From what Yanger has told me the authors seem to battle to write really good female characters. Deathnote didn't really feature any either. I would have loved to see more romance of the established couple instead of Hayamins character honestly. Idk maybe i'm like the only person that loves seeing romance between two people already married/engaged etc.
Also finished The Legend of Legendary Heroes. Overall it was alright but nothing too special. The shifts in tone was a bit jarring. One minute having a classic tsundere type gag then next there's incest rape going on. I understand the concept of putting in some lighter elements with heavy material so the readers don't get too drained but the reverse situation requires quite a bit of finesse to make it work which this lacked. Would have been better if it was just the usual trashy battle harem imo. The fantasy setting is enough to carry it mostly. To me the romance aspect of bakuman wasn't that important, i was way more invested in the bromance. The two main characters complemented eachother super well imo, and they were a fun duo.
I ended up watching all 3 seasons over a few days because i got so into the series, was a lot of fun although i felt that the start/middle part of season 2 was a bit frustrating as a viewer.

I started s1 a week ago but stopped because I couldn't handle how dumb the Azuki relationship was. Picked it up again this week and now i'm on season 3. It's really good aside from a few characters feeling a bit weak. Which is a bit funny due to that being Takagi's issue while he's based on the author lol. I told Yanger this but basically most of Takagi's issues are all mental stuff which fits the dyanmic of him writing the script while Mashiro's are basically all physical issues which again fits to an extent but at the same time makes his character feel a bit weak. Doesn't help that his relationship with Azuki is fucking moronic for the first chunk of the show then she basically doesn't exist for in the ending chapter it seems. So we hardly get time for them to grow as characters like Takagi/Aoki/Kaya have. Our theory was that since the author is basing Takagi on himself it's a lot easier to deal with the mental issues of script writing where as he protrays his partner(Mashiro) in a more idealized light.
Also I'm just a sucker for romance so I want to see cute moments like Kaya cuddling Takagi after a long day and stuff like that. I know it's not the focus of the show but small details like them hugging each other every now and then would really improve my enjoyment of it. Maybe I'm really just a teenage girl on the inside -___-
edit: Oh a fun little game we came up with is trying to guess which characters are "real" and which are "idealized". It's kind of funny how Hattori is basically the ideal editor while Miura feels more like a real character even though he's worse in the show.

Its not like he knows what he's talking about, considering his idea of "high production value" are anime that make heavy use of cost-cutting CGI in place of key animation.

after reading the last few pages i just thought id drop in to say a few things...
1) i liked SAO. 2) i liked bake, nise, neko..but am having trouble getting into mono-2nd season 3) sent needs to watch SSY b/c i really liked it...and i hope its something he would enjoy too (even if there's not really any mechs)
edit: needs to watch is a little strong...let's just make it "i wish for sent to watch SSY b/c i really liked it, and i hope its something he would enjoy maybe"

SSY is sci-fi world building porn, i almost wish i could rewatch it without knowing what happens, it's not really a good series for a rewatch once you know everything
|
really? it felt more fantasy than sci-fi to me (for the most part). actually it seems to be more like a strong mixture of both sci-fi and fantasy which when done right can make some of the most incredibly works
|
it's most definitely scifi as far as i'm concerned, not fantasy + Show Spoiler +It's a fairly standard and typical futuristic post-apocalyptic dystopian setting, which is fairly standard for scifi It's just that we have mutated animals and espers as well, but neither of those things are really things that makes it fantasy
Not to mention how big a focus the series has on speculative science and dark undertones
also fwiw, it won the Nihon SF Taisho Award, which is basically a japanese scifi award

It's pretty set utopian sci-fi with some other sci-fi genres mixed in there to spice things up. Sci-fi and Fantasy are very close together. So much so that some stuff we call sci-fi has more in common with fantasy writing than sci-fi. An example that comes to mind is the Star Wars prequels. Which is why you may think like that.
As for SSY, it doesn't really fit as fantasy. Grounding its setting in technology is the obvious "sci-fi" thing but the aspect I think that separates it more from fantasy is how the social commentary is at the core of the story. Fantasy typically doesn't have this as a core component(Obviously this is generalization).

+ Show Spoiler +I get what you're saying, i've just usually defined sci-fi as more of a science-y thing and when the espers gets involved in SSY it becomes more fantasy. still, it does strongly remind me of a sci-fi/fantasy novel series by Orson Scott Card (specifically the rat-ppl)....i think it's called Homecoming series or something like that....really enjoyed the series (but i should warn there's strong religious subtext )
I'd also like to throw this in here, and it's one of the first things i look at when defining sci-fi or fantasy is something I've read in an essay by Card where he says in sci-fi stuff happens and something is used to resolve the conflict and that something that's used is usually defined or explained through science (doesn't necessarily have to be real world science or science that we are capable of achieving now...but the explanation is made through science...and in fantasy stuff happens and the something used to resolve the conflict is explained through some type of magic/special power/superstition type of thing.
|
Regarding the last part of your post: + Show Spoiler +In SSY things are very specifically resolved through something grounded in science, lol Both the anti esper poison and the negative feedback are both grounded in science, also esper abilities aren't really a fantasy thing, they're far more of a sci-fi super power as opposed to just standard magic, the esper powers in SSY are meant to be a new step in human evolution, they're meant to be explained through science
And like numy said, a big part of SSY is about exploration of some rather dark sides of human and dystopian socities, hell everything regarding the rat people is fairly disturbing
fantasy typically doesn't take that approach or deal with those elements
|
which is where i have to agree with you. thinking back on it, they do try to explain the esp through evolution and even the "demon" things that they're afraid of are really just some type of genetic mutation deal.
I know that it's in there and it makes you right about this, but it just felt like it was a off-handed type of explanation, or that they didn't go into it in enough detail to satisfy me i guess.
|
Man this ending of Bakuman is basically a gigantic "fuck you for making us continue deathnote when we wanted it to end". So dam good.
Overall loved the show. Azuki's last minutes weren't too bad but Tomboy is just the only real girl in show.

The father is obviously the director. There's too much kid related stuff in the room. Despite all her other personalities, I highly doubt she would've needed children's books, a stuffed animal, or blocks. Maybe this is why the robot was made.
The kid is fifteen maybe? They're the primary suspect for the murder because they're inside the room. The escape route would be out the door on the cart. Everyone was distracted by the body and it was dark, so it was a great opportunity to escape.
Don't know why the dismemberment was required. There's clearly another reason besides biometric access. It's been too long since I read Zaregoto.
Can't think of a motive. Maybe it was Shiki's plan to commit suicide, thus creating an opportunity to let the kid out?
If the kid is the one who killed Shiki, then obviously they would have put the notes on the computer. They also have knowledge of the personalities, so that's within reason.
Not sure what to make of the elevator. Not really sure why the director was killed either.
Not sure why Moe got to talk with Shiki at all. Why did she ask about her parent's deaths? I thought Moe might be Shiki's daughter (and also has multiple personalities?), but that seems unlikely. Maybe the interview was to establish that Shiki is alive when she's dead (the smell alone suggests she's been dead for some time)? The kid was impersonating Shiki and nobody could tell the difference? + Show Spoiler +Man I dont even know what the fuck is going on. I waited like 6 episodes and granted I sorta half assed it but some of the stuff is so random and seemingly pointless.
Well it wouldn't be a very good mystery if you immediately knew why everything happened, now would it?

SSY really feels a lot like fantasy in the beginning because it takes a lot of ideas from fantasy and later explains it with sci-fi.
And yeah, a mesh up between fantasy and sci-fi can make incredible works. My absolute favourite fantasy universe, the elves from Bernhard Hennen, is full on fantasy but takes a lot from sci-fi works when describing ancient places etc. Even the magic is explained in kind of a sci-fi-y way. God, I just love that universe so much.

Fantasy and Scifi can coexist with each other pretty easily once Clarke's Third Law comes into play. And as far as anime goes at least, most scifi stuff tends to be on the "soft" side of scifi, leaving plenty of room for fantasy to come in.

I don't think that can become a serious contest. Ougi just lacks a certain... QUALITY... that Hanekawa has in abundance.
Which I think Ougi pointed out. Be interesting to see how the story goes in the next arc.

While she is lacking in a certain area, Ougi isn't just Hanekawa minus said quality
With her apparition in the past shows, I'm tempted to believe that she isn't 'good'.
S2 : + Show Spoiler +Ougi was 'responsible' for Nadeko turning into snake goddess
Owari : + Show Spoiler +She 'lured' Araragi into the classroom, she's stalking the MC/following him/knowing everything about him
