Cause it's just a small niche. We'd have better standards and quality productions if a more general and mainstream population watched anime. Except popular mainstream shows have standards of a sewage drain in a flood. "Mainstream" doesn't really do anything but dilute the product while making the producers tons of money. For the audience it's no better or worse than it just being well done niche. even if the story isn't that good, at least the effects and visuals would look really good though? Just imagine if the industry(sans kyoani or ghibli) paid animators a lot more than the peanuts they do now. more people would be motivated to actually do it and even the trashy low profile battle harem adaptions could look pretty damn good compared to what they are right now. That may not be the case. You have to remember that for a business they care more about profit margins than quality. If you can pay your animators peanuts while getting say 1 million profits from it then there's no reason to increase the animator pay to something good if profits only go up to say 1.5 million. Mainstream money does not mean quality will always increase. Even if you look at say Western media you see the same thing. Good quality shows often land up cancelled even if they make money just because they don't make enough money to warrant running them. The cheap easy shows that make maybe less money are worth more to them. That's why you can get like 20 seasons of Fear factor or whatever trashy show while new Sci-fi stuff gets cancelled in 10 episodes even if they break even. anime is really really tiny. I'd say that profits would increase far more than from a small 1 million to a still small 1.5 million. While i'm not sure about it, i would think they would add more tighter regulations as well. Otherwise, no one would want to be an animator at that point. Increased demand but no increased incentive? I don't think japanese are that insane to not boycott that. i didn't see stuff like GoT, walking dead, or breaking bad getting canceled. Dr who has like 10+ seasons as well and i wouldn't say that show is bad either.
When talking about these things you can't just pick the most popular shows but the ones that are still mainstream while not being insanely popular. It's like talking about manga then only talking about the big 3 which doesn't tell the story. For every GoT there's a Rome lurking in it's shadow. Sad really. Goes to show that it's more about luck and timing than quality.
All I'm saying is you can't say that "mainstream" will make something better. It's too simplistic an approach to how the world works. Media companies are very fixed in how they operate and what they deem as acceptable while being very slow to change. Companies like Netflix have already shown how one can discard traditional methods of production/airing in order to create a better product. Yet no one else bothers to emulate them. Same as Kyoani has shown that again proper planning and execution can reduce overall expenses on a product but the industry by and large doesn't really care.
At the end of the day a paradigm shift within Japan surrounding how TV media and anime works is more likely to have an affect on the quality than anime getting more popular. One could argue that a shift may only take place with popularity but I think this is a bit naive. Popularity tends to cermet the current practices more than it helps change them. That is unless someone blows the current popularity out of the water using a superior system. Even then change is still slow and may not happen as companies are incredibly stubborn.
edit: I'd just like to add as a quick note something I find interesting. Change can be looked at in terms of Newtonian physics. Think of it as a stationary object. There's a certain inertia attached to getting it to move. The object can be in a bad place currently then after moving land up in a good place. The issue is that that movement can take quite some time. For a business, specifically one with shareholders you often afford to wait for that object to reach a good place. It's short term thinking but that's just how things are. People would rather stick with a current broken system that nets them money than attempt to move to a better system that may net them more money in the long term. That inertia is just too great. That's why you see companies holding onto dying systems fighting for their lives instead of moving on.

Anyone know some good anime artists? I'm interested in getting some commissions done and wonder if you guys had any experience doing something like that

Finished Code Geass. + Show Spoiler +Not bad at all. Still sad that Euphy and Shirley died. Same with roro. My heart broke when I saw how dejected he was when he was told to leave and never come back by Lelouch. Lelouch is such a boss though. Aside from some hiccups like those earlier deaths, he pretty much got the ending he wanted and gets to explore around the world he helped build with CC.
I think my only problem with the second season is that it felt like they tried to do too much and it could've used more episodes. I would've loved to see more of what happened after he took control with the Damoces and FLEIJA. I mean, emperor of Britannia, CEO of Black Knights AND head of the UFN lol. I just had to chuckle XD Compared to light in Deathnote where I started to root against him as the show went on, I felt like I was mostly on Lelouch's side overall aside from several of his stunts and mistakes like the Euphy thing (damn, that timing).

Dead. Shit was confirmed in an interview.
+ Show Spoiler [Subete ga F speculation] +Shiki had a kid. The father is obviously the director. There's too much kid related stuff in the room. Despite all her other personalities, I highly doubt she would've needed children's books, a stuffed animal, or blocks. Maybe this is why the robot was made.
The kid is fifteen maybe? They're the primary suspect for the murder because they're inside the room. The escape route would be out the door on the cart. Everyone was distracted by the body and it was dark, so it was a great opportunity to escape.
Don't know why the dismemberment was required. There's clearly another reason besides biometric access. It's been too long since I read Zaregoto.
Can't think of a motive. Maybe it was Shiki's plan to commit suicide, thus creating an opportunity to let the kid out?
If the kid is the one who killed Shiki, then obviously they would have put the notes on the computer. They also have knowledge of the personalities, so that's within reason.
Not sure what to make of the elevator. Not really sure why the director was killed either.
Not sure why Moe got to talk with Shiki at all. Why did she ask about her parent's deaths? I thought Moe might be Shiki's daughter (and also has multiple personalities?), but that seems unlikely. Maybe the interview was to establish that Shiki is alive when she's dead (the smell alone suggests she's been dead for some time)? The kid was impersonating Shiki and nobody could tell the difference?

Well, I ain't slighlty interested in comparing any of the mentioned shows to SAO instead to other A1 shows. Do you know what "from a viewing experience" means? I dropped SAO after the first or second episode, I reckon, primarily because of eyecancer designs and uninspired action which you apparently thought "looked really nice and suits people with a superior taste such as yours", huh.
Here's another idea where the irony comes from. It's the general consensus -gatari series is a high-budgeted blockbuster despite the fact SHAFT has been known for pretty much the cheapisest animation in a mainstream for ages, and that SAO's animation is top-notch produced despite the show being a steaming pile of dogshit. Therefore we came to conclusion: when people say high-budget production, they are thinking of all merits, not restricted to animation quality only, and are comparing series production to the general level of production in industry (be it by genre or studio) and not handfully selected examples.
