I don't think most of us dislike Sam for his nerdiness, but rather for being so utterly useless - which really has very little to do with him supposedly being a nerd. Okay, how is being "useless" something you don't want to see in a story? This seems to be the main complaint (at least the one that isn't completely idiotic), but I don't really get it. I watch a show, especially one like GoT, because I want to see characters interact with each other. I want character development, story development, yadda yadda. I get all of that with a character like Sam, even if he is by some definition completely useless. The only argument I can come up with is, again, the lack of ass-kicking he does in comparison to most other characters. But that's a pretty shallow reason, so I'll just give the benefit of the doubt here and assume that's not the reason and I just don't get it. You misunderstand me completely (just like the Dutch guy) and both of you should really calm down a bit with you passive aggressive posting styles - saying that you are giving me the benefit of doubt after having entirely missed the mark on what I meant really only serves to make you look like a fool. I do not have any complaints with Sam being in the story, but I do not like him as a character - these are not mutually exclusive just like liking and wanting to be a character are not inclusive of each other. When I said he was utterly useless I meant for himself. Sam is the guy who meets a little resistance and then gives up, expecting everything to be handed to him or simply accepting his faith. He is a burden to everyone else, and he is contempt with that. I suspect we might see him grow a fair bit (he already has shown signs of improvement), but he has a far way to go before he becomes a character I can root for. But isn't there a big difference between not rooting for a character, and not wanting to see anything of him and coming here to complain about Sam getting too much screen time? I'm not saying that you specifically did that, but a lot of people did, and it's them I don't understand. If you just don't like Sam's character, that's perfectly fine. But what we see here goes beyond that for some people, apparently, and that's what puzzles me.
Notice how I have at no point entered that discussion... Why in the world did you quote me if that was what you wanted to talk about?
EDIT: I specifically objected to the notion that just because we are nerds we have to like the supposedly most nerdy character in the series.

Balon - They have his son. Tywin has shown what parents are willing to do to get their kids back. The Iron Islanders might not agree. They gave up his son pretty quick. Would they really want to try and get him back? Yara is the only character we know outside of a couple of the Sea bitch crew, so she would be the prime candidate.
Who are "they" ???

Well we definitely can think of some people who want to murder Joffrey, I hope its a Stark.

Assholes? (slightly more serious - we do not really know, although there is a lot of guessing going on).

Lets be honest here, if you haven't managed to put two and two together as to who is holding Theon at this point, you haven't been paying attention. Strapping him to a an X cross, flaying him, blowing horn, people calling him bastard.
The biggest question atm is where Theon is being held, as it appears he's not being held anywhere near the other..ehem..of "his" house.

Well if hes being held by boltons bastard...hes clearly being held wherever that guys castle is.

I like him and I don't think he's wasting screen time. I like him but I also think they are maybe putting a bit too much screen time in for him, I mean they need to give him some and clearly they want to develop his character but I think they give him a bit too much! Also too who ever was talking about Jon Snow's actor, that guy is playing that role perfectly! What do you expect a virgin young male to do when some smoking hot red headed chick starts getting naked? Their is no conflict their I don't care what vows have been sworn or how dedicated you are to the night's watch(Which a ton of it's members are known to have gone out to whore houses while on the watch, so clearly not the biggest of broken oaths there). IMO the actor is doing a very, very good job at portraying Jon Snow right now and has nailed what I think that character in the show should be like!
Perhaps it's because most of the cast are doing such a good job of portraying their characters. For example, Catelyn (in her red wedding scene) and Jorah (when Danaerys asks where Daario is) convey so much even when having no lines to say at all. Yet Kit's performance, who is Jon's actor, strikes me as wooden and lifeless. The cave probably wasn't my best example, but I think my other example about Jon's conversation with the warg about which castles on the wall are manned holds. In most scenes with Ygritte, the actor who plays her often has to carry the scene. So in that case, I don't think it's entirely the director's/writer's fault that Jon's scenes comes across as so boring.

I cant wait to see all the backlash from the last episode. If the ending of this season is as good as the soundtrack leads me to believe.... then i will be one happy camper

Maybe it's just me but I find it annoying that HBO has press releases about actors taking certain roles but said season we only see them for less than five minutes during the entire season. Mainly the Onion Knight and Mance Rayder.

He did an amazing job in Rome and also played his mafia guy role in Dexter flawlessly!

OK, first of all, as to who people find irritating and why: in order to truly unnerve someone, you have to touch a soft spot. People would find it ridiculous, unbelievable, or just funny otherwise. In order to make someone indignant, you have to strike home. My theory is that the Sam haters see just a tad too much of themselves there, just as bullies attack not out of confidence, but out of weakness. You call a character unlovable? Well, that says more about your self-image than anything else (and yes, my hate of Theon probably doesn't say good things about me).
This is why people find the over-the-top Southpark Movie insults hilarious and not enraging; calling someone "donkey raping shit-eater" can be seen as a friendly jibe, while calling someone "just sad and pathetic" can get you punched in the face. Fiction holds no power over someone's emotions without a deeper truth. My guess is that Sam receives more hate here than among the general populace.

People who actually take pride in being nerds wouldn't be that way. People who aren't awkward would love him for that (Sheldon in TBBT is the most popular character). People should listen to Tyrion more: "Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you."
