I like him but I also think they are maybe putting a bit too much screen time in for him, I mean they need to give him some and clearly they want to develop his character but I think they give him a bit too much! Also too who ever was talking about Jon Snow's actor, that guy is playing that role perfectly! What do you expect a virgin young male to do when some smoking hot red headed chick starts getting naked? Their is no conflict their I don't care what vows have been sworn or how dedicated you are to the night's watch(Which a ton of it's members are known to have gone out to whore houses while on the watch, so clearly not the biggest of broken oaths there). IMO the actor is doing a very, very good job at portraying Jon Snow right now and has nailed what I think that character in the show should be like!

Hey, one of my three best friends is a "nerd like him" in the "real world". He did grow up to be a "normal guy" in his twenties, but how could you not like someone that's a combination of intelligent and gentle in spirit? Sure, the average person likes the bully more than the stereotype of the bullied (which is what you are REALLY getting at)... but if we are going about stereotypes he fits, he is the classic fantasy "bumbling wizard" (Neville Longbottom) or "weak hero" (Frodo Baggins) archetypes, depending on how he develops.

Probably not many. yeah, right? who doesn´t like nerds on a website like TL. we´re all superstars here with bodies of athletes, the minds of albert einstein´s calibre and stuff ... i prefer "nerds" like him over many people thinking they are better human beings. edit: spelling

Also .... for those scared of spoilers just stay away from this thread. It seems to be fine the day after an episode but I've read enough comments to piece together what is going to happen tomorrow

HBO is really breaking grounds with what they show on TV. I have a sneaking suspicion I know what picture you're talking about. Oh man. Also, I really wouldn't say Sam's the only character with alot of possible development. Ayra and Sansa, for instance, are undergoing a great deal of development through the series thus far.

So how come we haven't heard anything about the ministry of finance or the iron bank recently?

So how come we haven't heard anything about the ministry of finance or the iron bank recently? Cause the main focus of Tyrion has been his wedding. I imagine now that the North's army has been defeated, and that he's now married, the Iron bank will probably be mentioned and teased as another threat to the throne for next season.

Okay, how is being "useless" something you don't want to see in a story? This seems to be the main complaint (at least the one that isn't completely idiotic), but I don't really get it. I watch a show, especially one like GoT, because I want to see characters interact with each other. I want character development, story development, yadda yadda. I get all of that with a character like Sam, even if he is by some definition completely useless. The only argument I can come up with is, again, the lack of ass-kicking he does in comparison to most other characters. But that's a pretty shallow reason, so I'll just give the benefit of the doubt here and assume that's not the reason and I just don't get it.

Sam: - knows how to read and handle ravens as one of the few in the night watch - helps Crasters daughter escape, while nobody else gives a shit - helps Jon Snow with saying to Mormont that he's happy to take Jon's job as a steward when Jon wants to go with the halfhand - finds a dragonglass knife and somehow he thinks its important enough to keep it, while the other 2 rangers just ignore it. - survives a whight attack. With help of a direwolf, ok fair enough. But that direwolf, why would he help an utterly useless person? - is seen by a whole undead army with white walkers and they just ignore him - kills a white walker - has a lot of book knowledge that even saved lives. He tells the others about the "3 times = white walkers" horn blow, later on making him and 2 comrades run and survive because they knew what it meant - is a good friend to people around him - and a friendly and caring person in general. so that's utterly useless, ok....

Whatever Sam is capable of intellectually or whatever hes accomplished, hes just straight up pathetic. Hes the kind of guy that in seconds of meeting, you want to beat on.

He's telling the incest broad [cant recall her name] about this and that and she calls him a wizard. Which, firstly, is not something be proud of but appropriately cause someone sadness, given its a sign of the poverty of her existence up to that point. But more importantly his response to this is this shy, half hearted, pathetic smile and laugh. Whatever Sam is capable of intellectually or whatever hes accomplished, hes just straight up pathetic. Hes the kind of guy that in seconds of meeting, you want to beat on. The "incest broad" has a name, it's Gilly. He obviously has an extremely low self-esteem, and her telling him that she think's his ability to read is amazing, is obviously a heartwarming moment for him. If your first thought when meeting shy, introverted, "weak" and book-ish people is to physically assault them, well, there might be something horribly wrong with you. Perhaps I would find him annoying, perhaps I'd pity him, but wanting to beat him because he's pathetic? What kind of a horrible attitude is that?
