He also had been whimpering the whole time - it's hard to feel bad for a guy is actively trying to kill himself because he can't take the same pain everyone else is enduring. If it weren't for the fact that he could read he would have been dead in the snow months ago.
Well, many characters hasn't done "anything of value" in the show. Jon Snow, he couldn't execute a wildling, which meant he got caught, which meant Qorin Halfhand got caught and had to be killed. Good job Jon, now let's hate him. Arya, she hasn't done anything but trying to stay alive during three seasons. I guess you hate her aswell.
Also, saying he is whimpering all the time just isn't true. There's plenty of scenes with the nights watch where he's the only one keeping a positive spirit while the other two guys constantly complained about having to "shovel shit" and what not. Rewatch the last few episodes and he does the opposite to complaining. Jon on the other hand, he's been complaining a lot. When he became a steward he complained, when he wanted to leave to join Robb he complained, at Crasters keep he complained. I'm starting to hate Jon now, just wanna watch that cry baby die. ^^
There's plenty of characters to hate in this series, but I'm having a hard time seeing how Samwell is one of them.

I don't get the hate towards Samwell though, people hate on him because he's fat and not your stereotypical badass macho male. People are no better than his father, no wonder fat pre-teenage kids get bullied. Makes me sad.
Also, about the leaches and why Melissandre didn't produce more blood out of Gendry; I guess the thing is that it's draining his strength, just as Stannis only was "man enough" to produce one shade. I'm guessing Gendry was drained after those three leaches. Glad he wasn't killed though. Sure he didnt ask to be sent to the Wall but he keeps fucking up and hasnt adapted to his new life at all. The whining he did after he got left behind in the season 2 finale was too much for me, I didnt care that much before that.

Only thing that was a bit weird in my opinion was starting off the episode with Arya for only two minutes only to never show anything of the whole Stark/Jamie plot :/ Yo there's gonna be a wedding cya in E09.
And about the guards at the tent of Dany. Those guards are men who have each killed a baby, apart from other quite gruesome and cruel ways of 'training'. Can't it be that this slick individual Darioo managed to slip by, as he was wearing one of their costumes, with a story or something similar? The unsullied to me seem like a bunch of warriors that can not think for themselves let alone sense/judge trickery or what not.. Maybe it's just me. :D

How cruel of Melisandre not to let Gendry finish :/.. She must have learned the same torture methods as the guy torturing Theon.

I don't really know what he has messed up that much. You can say not sending the ravens, but last we saw he was surrounded by white walkers, so really that was an unrealistic expectation that he would both escape them AND get back to camp in time to send ravens before it was over run when the white walker army was passing by him towards the fist of the first men. Really it was bad writing/directing to have Sam surrounded, with the White Walker looking right at Sam and then escape with no explanation on how. I think most people would be upset if their friends abandoned them in that situation, even if they understood why their friends would run. Since then Sam has saved Gilly and the child from Craster and the mutiny, and killed a white walker, and his story isn't over yet.

Quite bizarre why the whitewalker we see at the end of season 2, clearly depicted as some sort of leader having a horse and all, is the one to find Sam in the 'middle of nowhere (although there's a fire and perhaps the blade attracts/can be felt by White Walkers)'. Unless every White Walker looks like a gramps once he's turned. ;o

from "inside the episode" commentary; the way season 2 ended (sam being surrounded by ww/others/wights), it was just done for cool effect and end season with a bang but not really related to the story.

How did the coin draw with the second sons work? The girl didnt see the coins matching to the names and if the coin matchs the person hes it?
There is no new episode next week, right? Why?

This is the kind of episode pacing I enjoy. Not like last week where they went back and forth between locations where nothing was happening, they stayed in each place until the story there had reached a reasonable stopping point.
By the way, regarding the leeches, I really don't think Melisandre cast an assassination spell. If it were that easy to assassinate someone, she'd have just leeched a bunch of Stannis' blood and killed all of his enemies in Westeros. It's probably just a spell of observation or something. I'm sure we'll find out in the next episode.

It was whoever drew the Bravosi coin had to do the deed.

I really liked this episode. That Bravoosi guy reminds me a lot of Jaqen both in demeanor and look. I wonder what % of people watching yelled at their screen when Sam ran away without taking back the dagger that was right there.
I think that beginning scene was the first time Arya has smiled since Season 1.
Also, all these new recruits to Daenerys outclass Jorah so hard (Barristan, Grey Worm, and now this Bravoosi guy). He apparently has a fight scene in the next episode so that might change.

Sam is growing for sure. Absolutely started out worthless. But him standing out there against the white walker shouting for her to get inside* made him seem as cool and manly as Robb or Jorah, only maybe morso because those guys are good fighters. It was a damn brave thing to do, and not bad for a coward.
And yes, like everyone else, I gasped, rewinded, rewatched, and shouted at him for dropping the dagger. Hopefully he has more, but it would be a cool narrative trick to have him have totally panicked after his shining moment. Not a great warrior yet.
*Yes, the smart thing would have been to tell her to run the other direction. But good decision making in danger is a far higher and rarer form of bravery than risking your life, as anyone who's taken a lifeguarding course knows.

not that high up the horse's neck

Does Melisandre's sacrifice require cutting someone's tool off, like Theon's torture?

these should be more penise decapitations!
