It's also worth mentioning that Brienne said something along the lines of Jamie being worse than she had expected, and that "maybe people just love to praise a famous name". Sure he was weakened due to the captivity, and his hands were tied, but it's worth mentioning.
Only thing that's certain is that Barristan Selmy is a beast with the sword, as several characters have expressed (Jorah Mormont, Jamie, Ned Stark etc.)
Also, when Ned Stark got sentenced to death Jamie was at Casterly Rock I think? If so it would have been a little impractical to have a trial by combat and wait for Jamie to get there. Or maybe had he already been captured by the Starks?

When did he say this? The only time I recall him saying anything about his own skill level was the first episode of season 1 when he goading Ned. He mentioned that the competition at court was getting stale.
He said it in season 2, to Brienne I think. I think he said there were perhaps three men in Westeros who could beat him.
Without going into the unmentionable there is not a great deal to add as to who these men might be. There are few fights in the show and little talk of previous personal combat.

Barristan was there. Ned was up for treason so it would be fitting for the commander of the kingsguard to face him.

Season 2, Episode 8, when talking to Brienne.
Brienne of Tarth: You will not provoke me to anger. Jaime Lannister: I already have. Look at you. You're ready to chop my head off. Do you think you could? Do you think you can beat me in a fair fight? Brienne of Tarth: I've never seen you fight. Jaime Lannister: The answer is no. There are three men in the kingdoms who might have a chance against me. You're not one of them.
keep in mind though, this is Jaime being his cocky self, and it doesn't necessarily state facts.
Wahaaa that episode was fucking crazy, so much shit went down!
The grinding misery of Jaime and Theon is so vivid, and man...Danaerys!!! I totally knew that was going to happen but that was spectacularly executed. The big reveal that she spoke their language all along haha. What a killer character . She is the coolest. With a fairly just heart but totally ruthless in her pursuit of the throne.
It's really hard not to love Dany, especially because Emilia Clarke is gorgeous as hell.

I can't believe I forgot who that eyepatch guy was. When I remembered, I completely shit my bricks. I guess I'm just retarded though, because my roommate was all "yeah, that was kind of the point"
I've never seen a show with so much story to follow. There are easily two dozen important characters storylines of their own, which are combined into a huge ultra-complex main plot. There's too little screen time to even show all the most important characters each episode, even though they outrageously omitted the boobies this week.
I don't quite get what Theon's captor did. He fake freed him to get information, this much is clear, but why would he kill his own men and say Theon did it? Was he not allowed to kill them but did it anyway to make his scheme more believable to Theon and get more information?
Daenerys is now finally a legitimate force with power to back up her claims. She owned the overconfident douchebag slaver guy in predictable fashion and now commands a respectable army. This may well convince the Dothraki to join her as well because they follow strong warlords. By the time she ships her men over to Westeros, her dragons will have grown up, making Daenerys the dominant military force by a wide margin.

I suppose it's possible the men had stuffed their backs with straw and had chain mail on underneath and faked death. though its also possible the kid is a sadist.

edit: she literally was disarmed and won by checking the guy to the ground. I imagine Jaime could disarm her far easier than that knight did, and I dont think he'd be foolish enough to get checked to the ground by her either.
Didn't she beat Loras tyrell who is one of the best swordsmen in the seven kingdoms (certainly the best in the tyrell's army) and not some random? And Jaime seemed to think Ned could beat him, hence why jaime was so upset that a soldier stabbed ned mid duel he wanted to see if he could beat ned.
Is he one of the best swordsmen? Everything we hear about him is in relation to his jousting/riding abilities.
As for the whole Jaime issue, I fence for my university. A year of absolutely zero exercise/practice/malnutrition will fuck you up, and make you slow and predictable, just as Brienne says. And that's a sport with probably less physical requirements than outright swordfighting. Was he still overrated? Maybe, but I'd say he has a hell of an excuse, especially given Brienne's style seems to be in hitting very hard against physically weaker opponents.

Was Ser Barristan ever in the small council meetings when Varys was talking about Jorrah spying on Dany? That would create hella drama. Jorrah obviously has stopped feeding information to the capital, but that would be a potential relationship ruiner if Barristan told that to Danarys.
Thoughts?
I don't remember if Ser Barristan was in any of those scenes. On a related note HBO included a particularly old scene in next weeks recap:
Ugh, I hadn't even seen that recap when I thought of that. I'm sad now :C
