I think it's more of a 'holy fuck look at that CS' effect, it's a lot easier for new players to understand that than GPM.

I don't consider kills or turrets farming though .-.

Not everything is about farm; creep stats lets you know how everyone is spending their time, and how the team has distributed farm priority.
