I'm pretty sure at level 2 or 3 into the skill, Sylla's Bear gains magic immunity making him invulnerable to mind-control. On previous levels I'm not certain......but I've never come across this happening ever so I believe its considered a hero.

Pushing right when you finish Mek basically guarantees you a tower. Pipe is good when you feel it's higher value than other options (e.g. your team is not lacking disables, but needs more pushing power or defense against AoE magic damage). It's often the case that someone else should be buying it though.

Both are viable, it depends if you have another support better fitted for going Mek (e.g. Lich) which can allow you to skip it completely, or if the game is becoming too passive. Safe bet is always Mek first, but if you're feeling way aggressive like a Dendi Diver or have the burden of ganker on you then Force Staff can work. Hood/Pipe is expensive, definitely after your core items. (Phase or Arcane boots, usually Phase ---> Mek + Forcestaff) then if nobody is getting Pipe and your up against a heavy magic lineup, Pipe is fine. Otherwise you can always just buy yourself a cloak if there is another support on the team that should be getting it.

Vlad's gives you way more than vanguard for about the same cost. Armor, damage, mana regen, and lifesteal >>>> vanguard regen and chance to block. Normal pub build is vlad's (or just RoB if you don't think you need the survivability vlad's gives you) -> phase -> blink -> bkb/heart (depending on amount of stun/slow on both teams).

I go vanguard-Phase boots - BKB..any better 1) Different styles, including gank heavy, carry centric standards, push heavy, or the less often turtle heavy setups. All of them most important is to CONSIDER THE LANES. Make sure everyone either is where they are, or has a babysitter if needs it, or is capable to take the lane. The easiest way to lose(i.e. in pubs) is to just pick lane incompatible heroes. So for example something like this... Crystal Maiden (babysitting carry - support/initiator/) + Juggernaut(Carry) -->TOP Tiny/Pudge/Beastmaster (Ganker/Initiator) --> MID Prophet(Gank/support) --> Jungle Windrunner or Leshrac (AOE, Semi-Carry/support) --> Bottom/Suicide Lane 2) Ursa's best items revolve around getting Vladamir's Offering as soon as possible. This way, your capable of soloing Roshan at around 9 minute mark making you a huge threat, and hell if you're able to sneak the Roshan you become a monster! Vlads --> (SMOKE OF DECEIT, great way to sneak into Rosh Pit undetected) --> Boots --> Vangaurd(optional, but a safe bet) --> Phase --> Blink --> BKB --> Heart --> Butterfly

If you want a 5-hero-lineup that intends to use a synergy involving all 5 heroes, a mass-aura strat would be one possibility. This strategy intends to boost your autoattacks very big very early and use this advantage to push/finish the game fast with the whole team fighting together: Chen/Enchantress to convert creeps with aura, beastmaster, drow ranger, vengeful spirit would be ideal choices; added by somebody like skeleton king or bara until better choices like luna, lyca or maybe even troll warlord get added into dota 2.

Why would they make it an active item instead of just a passive mana regen aura for heroes and units?

Why would they make it an active item instead of just a passive mana regen aura for heroes and units? For lane controlling, which is a very important aspect in the Laning Phase. If you have a Basil active, vs an enemy hero in a lane and you both sit there to last hit, your lane will always be pushing deeper thanks to Basil. Therefore, strategically it's always most effective to keep it off, and activate it when you intend to push the lane instead of safely farming/leveling.

You turn it off so your creeps don't push up the lane (as they'll have more armor than the opposing creeps).
