is secret the most dominant team in dota 2 history or was na'vi just as strong or even better during their time? I don't recall it precisely.

most dominant team in dota2 history is alliance. i'd say secret are currently on par with last year's DK. TI1 navi and and TI2 iG are somewhere there too

most dominant teams in dota1 are VP, EHOME, DK.

Dominant in what way? How much they win? How they play?

I assume you are talking about how much they win, and I would hold off on that assessment. They won Summit and Redbull, but out of those only Summit was a tournament which had multiple top teams in it. Redbull "only" had iG essentially. Of course they are looking good again and may win MarsTV as well, but it doesn't make sense to me to talk about them being very dominant before they actually do win it. Obviously they are at least one of the very best teams, but to me dominant implies that they are clearly the best over some sort of a period, and they have to show it in multiple tournaments first.

To be considered to be a dominant team one has to be considered the best team in the world for a meaningful period of time iG held that for 6 or so months as did Alliance, and even Newbee was able to manage that for a solid 4 or so,

Secret is nowhere near that level of strength and cannot be considered "dominant" in any way as they've been the best team in the world for less than a month

I honestly don't think it's very clear who's the dominant team between VG, EG, and Secret. Every team ebbs and flows a bit. You need to zoom out pretty far to get a sufficient picture. Is Secret a clear favorite if we consider all the time between TI4 and now? Hell, go smaller, starting with DAC and going to now, is Secret dominant? Even if the answer were yes, I can't imagine it's by much.

I think it's possible dominance is becoming less of a thing in Dota 2 because of a broadening field and more incentive to compete. It's difficult to quantify dominance. Each in their own way, Alliance and Na'Vi were more dominant than I think any team has been since TI3. We may never go back to that.

Secret certainly isn't dominant if we look from TI4 till now, but it also isn't a very good period to look at because of the lineup changes in between. If we look at the current lineup only, Secret also hasn't really been dominant as they didn't win DAC and crumbled at SL12. Their "dominance" only started at the Summit as Redbull didn't have their main competitors anyway.

If Secret wins MarsTV and ESL, then they are the clear #1 favorite for TI. If they don't win them, then they are "just" one of the favorites.

Agree with the majority of your post but in those two tournaments they beat IG, LGD, EG and Vici. Not sure who else would be considered their main competition for TI at this stage?

I think the earlier comparison in this thread to last years DK is perfect.

still a far cry from Na'vi's domination from TI1 to TI2 or from alliance's imo but it is looking nice

I meant that Redbull didn't have their main competitors outside of iG. Summit had close to all the top teams, I never said otherwise.

its just that its the first time I've seen a western team completely dominate chinese teams as if they had no chance, even if it hasn't started too long ago, couple that with their huge win streaks and I can't really recall any other western team doing that, I remember na'vi being strong but their games were a little bit cheesy and way more messy when they beat the top teams (mostly because they could get away with it since most chinese teams still played a lot of dota 1 during that time and weren't prepared), that's why it feels at least as if secret is doing something new.

I guess that because I've watched dota 1 so much secret looks incredibly impressive. The western teams have been the underdogs pretty much always since... VP days? rush3d(PS) were pretty good too but they were never best in the world, then the closest thing we got later on was DTS clawing their away to a 3rd spot in the world championship and they were alone up there, no other western team came even slightly close to DTS (which became na'vi later on)
So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie

Until secret starts winning tournaments left right centre, I wouldn't call them dominating. After all they have had several let downs prior to the red bull win.

The most dominating team is alliance 2013 because there was simply no answer to their game by any team. Navi 2011-2013 was dominating too, but they did not flat out destroy the Chinese.

And then people wonder why Secret has so many haters...

Win 1 big LAN and suddenly they're in the conversation for most dominant team in Dota history.

I sometimes feel like the Secret fanbase is made up entirely of 12 year olds.

? You should've read my posts entirely, I probably watched more dota than you or 99% ever will, I'm not that much of a secret fan either, I just like kuro and puppey since ks.int's days.

That's all fine, and cheering for your team and hoping they win as much as possible is what a fan should do.

But please, let's not exaggerate. For a team to be truly dominant it would have to achieve a whole lot more than current Secret has.

The thing I see a lot from Secret fans (not necessarily you) is taking it to the extreme.

Drop out of Starladder --> they should disband
They win Summit 3 --> easily the biggest favorite to win TI and possibly having a run of dominance like Na'Vi and Alliance had

Obviously they can win the TI, they can have a dominant run but winning Summit 3 isn't the reason to conclude that.

Seems pretty likely. I think my order of preference is something like:

1) Na'Vi
2) Secret
3) VP
4) Empire
5) VG
