Norris trophy competing defensemen should see the toughest matchups and still do well (Like a Suter, Pietrangelo, Doughty, Karlsson, Weber), or do outstanding away from them (Duncan Kieth, although his matchups are a big knock against his case this year). Subban is obviously not an average defenseman, but his performance doesn't measure up with the top guys in the league.
For what it's worth, Subban does better than a few of those top-tier guys by this metric. All the more impressive given that Montreal plays a garbage system where they hang out in their end giving up chances for the majority of the game.
Regarding the argument I keep hearing about how "Subban isn't that great because he didn't start for Canada" - I think that's more a function of the tournament structure than it is an indictment on Subban's effectiveness in the NHL. The Canada decision was the correct one because of the unfortunate way the tournament works - one bad bounce, one bad piece of luck and you're done. Canada's entire strategy was built around giving the opposition nothing (while often not having a whole bunch going on offensively, mind you). Subban doesn't fit into this system for obvious reasons - he will give you more opportunities to produce offense but at a cost. That cost is too high a price in a one-and-out tournament. In the NHL, however, he does a lot more good than bad and is a significant net positive over the course of a series or season. I don't think the two are directly comparable for that reason.
Given his age and trajectory, if I was allowed to make a list of the top defenders I would love to have on my home team, Subban would likely crack the top 5. Top 10 at the very least. I have a hard time thinking of 19 others I'd rather have.
Wisniewski admits to lying about concussion symptoms.... obviously, he is not a good christian boy like James Reimer.
Speaking of lying, right after Carlyle's contract extension was signed he called up Reimer to see if his "shoulder" injury has healed.
"Randy Carlyle is staying in Toronto? Of Corsi is."
Subban looked like Guy Lafleur with that behind the back pass. The only problem is he passed it to a Bruin less than 1 metre from his own net. LOL Subban makes a lot of other far more subtle errors on defense than that. But, that was a doozy.

Hey Pal, thanks for directing me to the CBC stream for the NHL playoffs... it is so much better than any american broadcast of hockey I've ever seen. And I get to see Don Cherry, I normally don't get to see him.
you will almost never see an elite level defenseman make the 2 huge brutal turnovers Subban has made it an 8 minute stretch of game time...
and look who gets the first penalty of a game in the 2nd period of a scoreless tie.
the great thing about overtime is.... MOAR Don Cherry !
remember when hockey was an innocent game and the sun was going down after a day of hockey... it was getting harder to see the puck.. and someone yells.. " next goal wins "
Impossible to take a penalty this round. Players need to adjust and start going all Ryan Smyth on everyone's hands with the hooks and slashes. You will not get a penalty so why not?
Yeah it's actually looking like Morrow and Eriksson are the weaker pick ups from the trade when before Eriksson seemed to be the one they sought after. The million dollar question is did the front office know the strength of what they got in Fraser and Smith or did they just get lucky? Either way they do look good.
On PPP (the Leafs SB Nation blog) people from other fanbases have come in to offer their condolences on the Carlyle extension. It's absurd how bad the Leafs are managed.

Leafs management is somewhere between average and below average. "absurd how bad the Leafs are managed" occurred when they were owned by Harold Ballard.

umm actually what he got was 1 year... and the year after that is at the club's option. but, i won't let the facts get in the way of a good hate.
Where is that guy that said Malkin didn't deserve the Conn Smythe the year he won it. Damn... what a great goal by one of the best playoff forwards in teh NHL.
