Qualification
Professional-Amateur Preliminaries

Format
+ Show Spoiler +
From twelve preliminary groups, one player in each advances through a single-elimination bracket to the OSL Round of 24 Dual Tournament. Normally, they would join 12 more players that placed 16th-5th in the most recent OSL. This time around though, because HoGiL retired there was a wildcard tournament in the preliminaries for a thirteenth spot, fought over by the twelve finalists that didn't advance from the group stages.

The players of the Round of 24 are then split into 6 different groups of four each, and compete in a double elimination fashion. If a player can get two wins before he gets two losses, then he advances to the next round. If he can’t, then he is eliminated. Two players from each group of four will have the chance to continue to fight for this season’s title. Thus, twelve players will advance from the Round of 24 Dual Tournament.

These twelve will join the four players that made it to the semifinals of the most recent OSL in the Round of 16, and will be split into four groups of four. Since the Round of 16 is done in Round Robin fashion, each player will play the other three in his group, with the top two advancing. If there are any ties, tiebreakers will be played.

The rest of the rounds are straight-forward BoX matches (where X is 3 for quarterfinals and 5 for semifinals and the final) with single elimination. There is no third place match.

Thanks to Spica, orbit, and Crunchums, since I jacked their information from the prelims thread. Also, does anybody know the sponsor?

Not announced yet. They will soon though, probably when the Ro16 comes around. Maybe you could call it "MyStarleague" OSL for now?

I believe it is actually a company called "MY," so MyOSL should work for now.
Edit: at least that is what eton7410 said on his stream.

...I'm quite positive that "MyStarleague" was used just as a term for the new Pro-Am format, and that there are no sponsors announced yet. I don't think that there is a company called "My", or else the Korean websites would refer to the OSL as "MyOSL", but they're calling it just "Starleague" for now.

Ew, this is totally a "holier than thou" tone. I don't mean it to sound that way. D|

Oh wow Shuttle and Jangbi in the same group.

That group will be either dual zerg or dual protoss advancing, hahaha.

Why is Effort in the "Player Records" section?

Edit: s2 is missing from the Teams breakdown.

Group A = Group D of the MSL. except instead of sea is bogus and hyun is bisu... well, in term of skill it would be bogus as bisu and hyun as sea... poor hyun FlaSh 2-0 JD 2-1. FLASH FIGHTING!

Those are golds and silvers for active players, even if they have already been eliminated.

This is an incomplete list though. (P)Anytime and (T)Iris are still active, so they should also be included. I believe (T)XellOs is also technically not retired.

Include them!

do shuttle, tempest, s2, roro, killer, and hyun count as potential royal roaders (all people who were eliminated in a Ro36 before)?

otherwise soo, bogus, and major are the only ones.

Ro16 Players:
9Z: Calm, Modesty, Jaedong, Hydra, n.Die_soO, Shine, Killer, hyvaa, Hyuk
5T: Fantasy, Flash, Sea, Hiya, Baby
2P: Stork, Jangbi

Any word on whether groups will be decided randomly again? I hope not; that was dumb.

It's due time for JangBi to rise and let Templar storms break loose

Hoping for Jaedong vs Jangbi finals.

Also I predict Stork will 0-3 out of this tournament and announce his retirement. Will miss him.

Actually most of these Zergs are not a big deal, without Soulkey it will be just another flip coin (if Fantasy will get out of his slump, offcourse) as i dont believe fantasy wants to chalange JD.

I think (P)JangBi have deserved some pre-osl hype!

Counting the prelims, here's his record over the last 2 months:

PvT: 10-0 (100%)
+ Show Spoiler +

Sea W
Last W
Leta W
Classic W
Sharp WW
Tossgirl WW
Piano WW

PvP: 6-0 (100%)
+ Show Spoiler +

Stats W
Sang WW
Horang2 W
Shuttle W
Wooki W

PvZ: 8-3 (72.7%)
+ Show Spoiler +

Sacsri W
Hydra L
Crazy-Hydra W
Hyuk W
Perfective WW
n.Die_soO LL
Zero W
s2 W
Hyun W

Total: 24-3 (88.9%) If you take out the games against Tossgirl and Sang, he still have a 87% winrate. Compare that to Bisu's record over the same period: 17-5 (77.3%)

Some more hype.

Seriously you guys? Give some explanations because zergs are far from OP. There are just many more good players that play the zerg race instead of protoss. Look at how Protoss do well in proleague compared to starleagues. I don't have statistics but Protoss seems to be the strongest this year (in proleague). I think they just lack clutch players who knows how to perform in individuals.

Yeah, most Protoss players are loyal to Bisu, and follow his example. That's why they suck in SLs.

Personally I don't really enjoy any mirror MUs but at least ZvZ tend to be short and action packed. And TvZ is the shit, so this OSL shouldn't be that bad.

I hope Killer will prove he's a worthy heir to the throne of the Dong by some stellar ZvZ.

Doesn't OSL still have their fair racial distribution group policy? If so, + Show Spoiler [edit: meh, looks like not anymore...] +
we're only gonna have 1 group with 3 zergs and 1 terran, 3 groups with 2 zergs, 1 group with 2 terrans. Tosses obviously in different groups. In other words, each group is 2Z + 1T + 1 of (2P, 1T, 1Z), and hopefully most of the zergs will go down in that stage.

They got rid of that a long time ago. I remember the all-zerg group in ever 2008 osl.

I still don't understand this aversion that so many people have for ZvZ Bo3/5.

we're only gonna have 1 group with 3 zergs and 1 terran, 3 groups with 2 zergs, 1 group with 2 terrans. Tosses obviously in different groups. In other words, each group is 2Z + 1T + 1 of (2P, 1T, 1Z), and hopefully most of the zergs will go down in that stage.

They got rid of that a long time ago. I remember the all-zerg group in ever 2008 osl.

I still don't understand this aversion that so many people have for ZvZ Bo3/5.

zvz is the best

plus there's wayyy too many zergs in this osl (and also the msl)

ZvZ can be tense as hell

but a bo3 is still over in(less then) 30 minutes.

However hive ZvZ has to be the best matchup in all of Brood War(perhaps due to the small amount of times it happens)

Its all chaos and shit, plagues, hydras, cracklings, lurkers, devourers, ultras, queens, mutalisks, scoruges.

shit everywhere

plague everywhere.

Surely you jest. It's one thing to like ZvZs, it's another to not see why so many people dislike them.

whoa, this is definitely the mediocre zerg OSL.... hope fantasy and Stork get together to make an all zerg group to get rid of some of these guys, knowing the OSL, hyvaa will be a seed next season

after the Ro16 most of the weaker zergs (modesty, soo, hyuk, shine, etc) should be weeded out and we will be left with a pretty good race distribution I think.

as long as JD, flash, fantasy, and stork make it out, this OSL can still be really good. I think the ideal Ro8 would include those 4 plus hydra, baby, calm, and jangbi. just too bad that stork/fantasy/calm/sorta baby are slumping pretty bad right now lol

^Agreed. If we get a Ro8 of (T)Flash, (T)Fantasy, (T)BaBy, (Z)Jaedong, (Z)Hydra, (Z)Calm, (P)Stork, (P)JangBi then things will still be fun for the elimination bracket.

We will have a JvF final. That's right. Jaedong vs Fantasy all day. Fantasy will bust out a new build involving Battlecruisers to yamato hatcheries. Ofc in games 3,4,5, jaedong will use 2 hatch muta to get early scourge, park them on top of fantasy's starports and watch oov cry again.

Well Jangbi and Stork both have godlike PvT and very good PvZ when on, so I'd say we're all set for a Stork vs Jangbi final.

Right?

You can really never count Stork out. The only active players who has been in as many OSL finals as him are Jaedong and Flash. So I guess one of Flash vs Stork vs Jaedong is the most likely final. But since JangBi is so hot right now, he might be able to take out Flash's wrist and meet Stork in the finals.

Or knowing the OSL Jaedong will beat Flash in the Ro8 and JangBi will use his so hot right now powers to win over Jaedong.

How dare you doubt the Hyuk!?

Anyways, it's impossible to tell what will happen without seeing the groups. All the terrans are semi-slumping right now, so how they perform will affect the amount of zerg survivors greatly. If this was last season it would have been a zerg slaughter.

Dude, ZvZ is the WORST matchup because it never changes. There are only Mutas, Scourge, and Zerglings involved - EVER. I have not seen a ZvZ in the past year which got out of lair tech - most are just repeats of Muta v. Scourge battles - the only variation we see is when the pool goes down. PvP, while more chancy, is at least entertaining - players actually make different kind of units. TvT is amazingly intense, always gets to late game and tons of units. ZvZ? Boring.

I do agree with the overall point that TvT is in general a better MU to watch, but you might be selling ZvZ short a bit

Here's to Protoss getting wiped in the next round(which won't happen) and a 4-zerg group(which probably won't happen).

A) Wow, 10 games? How many ZvZ's' have been played during this time period? Did you know that providing counterexamples to a general assumption is a logical fallacy? I've seen >25 recent ZvZ, nothing but Mutaling/Scourge.

B) As far as Shark's articles, the fact that larvae are involved in production still doesn't make the game any better.

C) Nothing you've said shows that ZvZ is more interesting than any other matchup. Doesn't matter if it's good or not - the reason we don't want ZvZ is because any other single matchhup is more exciting. Especially in a Bo3 or Bo5. TvT gets into late game almost always, and while PvP tiruns into something of a coin flip rock-paper-scissors, at least it's not a rock-rock game 90% of the time.

D) One player, Great, is involved in 60% of the games you mentioned...he himself said that he wants to lead the trend out of "boring" ZvZ. Unfortunately, that doesn't really help the situation - only 4 times has any other player decided to break out of this trend. This and common sense dictates that there is no denying that ZvZ is 1) Boring and/or 2) The most boring. And all of this provides more than enough reason against any ZvZ BoX.

Your entitled to your opinion. But instead of looking at my post as an attack on what you think, look at it as an invitation to watch some really cool games that, by your own account, you haven't seen yet.

Ironically, in most of those great games he went hive in response to his opponent going hive first.

I wouldn't call ZvZ the hands-down most boring, though. It may be a bit subjective, but I find TvT the most boring regardless of--or perhaps because of--its usual progression into lategame...

I guess this can be somewhat valid, but in the lategame, everything is explosively quick - there is blazing action all over the map, and while the options from tank heavy, wraith heavy, bc fleet, or otherwise aren't nearly as entertaining as, say, ZvP or TvZ, there's still more variation than ZvZ.

We're entering ro16, which is 4 groups of 4 players, round robin style. 2 players from each group go to ro8. Tonight's ceremony is to create those 4 groups.

Is there no LR thread going up for the group ceremony?

A: Fantasy and either Sea or Hiya (soO got kinda screwed)

B: Flash and Stork, sorry Hydra (but I still love you)

C: JangBi and...BaBy (please no Zergs)

D: Who cares? (JD and Modesty)

Well, all you Zerg players can look at it like this: at least 2 Zergs (and 1 Terran) will be in Ro8...no guarantees for the toss.

I hope Calm makes it. He's made the ro8/ro4 in both msl osl for so many seasons now. Also, i hope that there's no protoss, so Jaedong has a better chance, and that shine clears his group too.

Jaedong should beat hyvaa (duh), and the best thing would be for Hyuk to win against modesty so they don't have to go into a 3xZ tiebreaker. And so JD advances already.

I kind of want hyuk to lose the last game because JD will inevitably eliminate people I like if he stays in the tourney. Then again a fantasy-JD series could be damn good.

And three sets of tie breakers looks probable at this point, so much starcraft.

Edit: Wait,. if hyuk loses, than he is up vs fantasy. I don't want to see that team kill again. NVM about hyuk losing.

Possibility of 12 players for 4 spots in tiebreakers is insane. What would've been even crazier is (and it was a possibility before last night) if all 8 spots had been decided in tiebreakers.

in the OP, I think modesty should be ahead of hyuk because he won the head to head.

Well, It looks like flash doesn't have much competition. The only one I would give a chance vs him is fantasy.

And go jangbi! Although you would have to go up against flash...

Yeah I agree. As a Flash fan I would like to see him play against:
R8 Flash vs soO
R4 Flash vs Killer
Finals Flash vs Fantasy

soO and Killer are showing impressive game sense these days and Flash vs Fantasy will be thrilling.
It's about time.

So far I have some ugly predictions for players who already left a group:

-Flash- almoust none of the players who advanced so far have any chance against him in Bo5, with the possible exeption of Fantasy, and only with him playing his A+ form. In Bo3 he can be beaten by Zerg if unlucky enouth.
-Fantasy- the best chances to eliminate him is to beat him in Bo3,as he is known as a real pain in the ass in Bo5. The best player to eliminate him in Bo5 (except of Flash) is Killer, with a style really effective against Fantasy's shacky TvZ. Also Hydra would have some chances, but if Fantasy not bring his TvZ retard mode, cyclop will also fall.
-Hyuk- be beaten in the very first Bo5 unless playing against Zerg or Protoss. Seems inevitable to me that he will be beaten by any terran if any get to semi to combat him.
-Soo- I will be surprised if he go far. But hey, its SKT Zerg. nobody knows when he will strike.
-Modesty- he lost good form from last OSL, he will fail.
-Killer- if he will dodge Flash, I can see him potentially taking gold, but better pray for Flash defeat in Bo3 or hope for Fantasy to play his best and somehow kill him in Bo5 (if there is possibility to such a semi). Against Fantasy, he can win. Against Hydra...it will be difficult.
-Hydra- another candidate for gold. Must aware of both Flash as well as Fantasy. In Bo5 he can beat anyone except Flash.

Now players, that still may advance:
-Jangbi- will fall. fantasy, Zergs, Flash...I see him being eliminate by any of these.
-Baby- can beat anyone in Bo3. Can be beaten by anyone in Bo3. Against the swarm he have some chances in Bo5. Fantasy will probably beat him (if current trend will continue), Flash will almoust surelly beat him. Just dodge Flash.
-Calm- this guy is a fucking enigma. I dont even dare to making predictions for him.

I believe Modesty is the first seed and Hyuk is the second seed since Modesty > Hyuk. He should be placed above Hyuk in the OP.

this. bisu is carrying protoss right now. As much as I wish it was not true, but bisu has issues in individuals so protoss is screwed. map makers should balance it out with making better sl maps (maps only used in osl and msl)

As you are all quite well versed in player analysis, I probably don't need to say this. However, I will say it because of how revolutionary it is:

If Flash wins this OSL, HE WILL BE THE FIRST PLAYER TO WIN 4 OSLs. I'm sorry, but it just seems to me that EVERYONE should be rooting for the emergence of a singular entity. That singular entity being hands down, the most accomplished and arguably the BEST player in these last 11 years of professional BW in Korea.

And yet still... you root for and talk about players who are, in comparison, nobodies.

Will you step beyond your petty loyalty to players less deserving and wholly inferior than He? Or will you cling to your own sense of novelty and faux individuality, rooting for a player who will never reach these heights, at which Lee Young Ho is arriving?

Even if you are not a fan of his, if you are a fan of BW, you will root for the advent that Flash is bringing to SC BW history.

He is making history. Take notice.

( I understand that this post is extremely opinionated and I am calling the community out. Sorry if I actually offended any of you with my insults. But for the most part I'm just having some fun pseudo-trolling and being dramatic. However, my excitement is genuine. I want to hear some cheers for Flash!)

Well if Killer wins he'll be the first Zerg who has lost to Boxer's nukes to ever win an individual title, what about that huh??

If jangbi wins the OSL this season with no other protoss in the Ro8, I would be incredibly happy, yet not actually believe it because wtf.

Seriously though this OSL has been full of surprises so who knows.

Killer is going to win the OSL, the only player who is a favourite against him is Flash and Flash is going to fall to Jangbi or a random zerg before the finals assuming Killer doesn't face him in the ro4.

Well, one can dream, now that JD is out.

Modesty should be placed at the top of Group D instead of Hyuk. OGN made the same error too on their tie-breaker program. Kinda odd unless I'm missing something.

I hate the fact Jangbi is facing Flash in RO8. I would love Jangbi being pared with some zerg, cause his game vs Calm was very good.

Methinks 2 Zerg and 2 Terran in RO4.

You are correct. Modesty defeated Hyuk, and in the case of two players advancing with 2-1, that decided who is on top and who can get matched up against who. So Modesty should be above Hyuk.

Given that Modesty is ZvZ specialist I wouldn't be too surprised if he sneaks again into semifinals (and then gets demolished there unless it's another ZvZ).

I think Fantasy is riging them brackets . Everytime he gets to Bo3 or Bo5 stages he gets a teammate to play . Hyuk has been his insurance for some time now ...

This is not the greatest bracket for Flash...TvP has looked to be his vulnerability lately, and if he could have avoided Jangbi then he could have cut TvP from his practice schedule altogether, giving him more time to rest. I would have liked to see him draw Hyuk or Soo instead.

Flash is 2-2 vP on BR/NBR
1-2 vP on La Mancha
never played Gladiator other than his one loss to JD in the ODT

poor captain Hyuk, Jangbi may actually have a better chance to advance versus Flash than against zerg right now. That is, as long as he doesn't go carriers.

How many times is Hyuk going to run into Fantasy? I like Hyuk, but if he wins we get more ZvZ. Meh.

This friday for the first game.

You gave me a fright. If it was this Friday, it would've disrupted Flash's SPL Final preparations.

It's on the 12th, the next Friday.

I was afraid to look in this thread bc of this.

What a shitty all zerg group. Too bad JD's ZvZ is not what it used to be (which is totally expected considering how well studied his ZvZ has been). The sad thing here is not so much that JD lost but that Hyuk and Modesty are nowhere near good enough to make any real impact in the Ro8.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There are three kinds of people in the world: those who can count and those who can't.

we're only gonna have 1 group with 3 zergs and 1 terran, 3 groups with 2 zergs, 1 group with 2 terrans.

ZvZ? Boring.
ZvZ isnt boring by itself. The only problem is the maps are too small for ZvZ to be interesting. Thats right, the maps are the problem. We need all the maps interpolated to be 50% bigger for ZvZ games, to make rushed weaker and ensure exciting Hive tech play. Will result in slow sleepy games worse than TvTs? Not a chance. Remember, zerg units are the fastest, so the extra map size is only necessary to cool the matchup down enough for both sides to be able to peacefully macro up before the hive tech showdown with an overjoy of green and red goo splatters, brown clouds, and chaotic mishmash of units melting into each other.

the number 1 terran vs the number 2 terran, unless jangbi has other plans and decide to save the protoss race

So increase map size for only ZvZ games??? Lol. What makes ZvZ boring is the repition. Someone just needs to think out of the box. Like mass scourge to kill ovs while teching to lurkers. That would b sick if you could pull that off.

Thing is zvz is a very volatile matchup one screw up can cause you a game so... some one who has guts got to start playing some new style in order to make zvz interesting ;D

Uhh yeah thats the point. Bigger map means rushes are less powerful and tech is more powerful so people will play for the econ game instead of early rushes every game.

Ro8 Day 2 has been pushed back one week to 26th August because the PL Finals are being held on 19th August.

The Ro4 and the OSL Final have also been pushed back one week. The new date for the OSL Final is expected to be 17th September.

Does the move affect the venue for the OSL finals? It would be a shame if they had to relocate as well (although the do have a lot more time).

No mention of the venue but it shouldn't be a problem given that the final is a month from now.

Is it just me or have the R&S for broodwar tourneys on the right hand side bar been replaced by SC2?

It seems like you have to manually search for BW tourneys now, can't just click the link directly...

Actually I might have misread what you said. You're right. I think it might be gone for good unless it's going to be under the liquipedia bar because as it stands now SC2 rankings are under TLPD (where the R&S threads use to be)

Yeah it'll definitely suck if it's gone, and I think it is.
August is always a turbulent time for BW (let's just hope we survive till the next August at least)
As for the TL changes I'm sure they had these changes in mind for a while and it might just be a coincidence that they made the change as all the bad news/rumors started popping out.

I can't believe Flash lost like that- first game passive as hell, no harass no nothing, 2nd game stubborn as hell, didn't backed and didn't build more marines and maybe a bunker in the 3rd to help him fend of the timing attack. He scanned 2-3 times(i head it) and after delaying Jangbi's third he saw he just started it. Should have guess its 2 base aggression. Still jangbi played like a boss and had a very good preparation for the series.

So if the Kong line has 3 golds amongst them, but all their golds were won against other Kong line members, are they still part or not part of the Kong line?

I don't think it counts, does it?

Hyuk's biggest mistake was cutting his hair just before his game against Modesty in the Ro16. Had he not cut his hair, he might have beaten Modesty, 3-0ed the group and then he wouldn't have had to face Fantasy.

Thanks to Ryo for the details! I feel like Soo's actually got a pretty good shot at making the finals considering he's pretty good at ZvP and Jangbi's not so great at that matchup. Unfortunately I also feel like Soo would be pretty boned against either Hydra or Fantasy.

Hydra's my favourite player so I hope he pulls it out but I think Jangbi vs Fantasy would be the most entertaining finals.

now that flash it out, this OSL suddenly became so much more interesting, everyone actually has a standing chance (yes, even soo)!

both RO4 match ups are very close, for finals, imo
fantasy > soo
fantasy < jangbi
hydra > jangbi
hydra > soo

Even before Jangbi beat Flash, I thought his chances of actually winning the OSL were pretty slim. But I'm really hoping he pulls it off. I don't think I've seen anyone with his determination and motivation lately. Plus I don't think I've ever seen so many different people (read fanboys) rooting for 1 player.

And to be completely honest, I don't think Hydra or Fantasy deserve a second gold. While Jangbi's gold is definitely overdue.

<3 Jangbi. Still waiting on that Jangbi appreciation video.

I hope Jangbi pulls a decent victory against Soo - even though he seemed kinda apathetic last month against Z in PL and OSL, those were really good players (games here). Jangbi-Fantasy would be epic as hell. If Jangbi plays like he did against Flash and Fantasy being Fantasy against P, it's gonna be a friggin' party

The Jinair OSL Grand Final is confirmed for 17th September, after the Chuseok holidays. The Fomos article below did not mention a specific time but the Fomos calendar has it at 6pm KST.
