Spot-lighted Thanks guys!
This is my 1001 post. I was intending it to my 1000th but Tofu stole it, appropriately enough in the Website Feedback Forum. I am not a gaming expert; ESPORTS drama fatigues me and whilst I have fond memories of BW I know longer play. The closest I get to being artistic is rearranging my bookshelf.
Despite the obvious lack of talent, I want to give something back to this community that entertains, fascinates and often scares me. So TL this is my contribution and if you don't like it
+ Show Spoiler [The Reason TL Look The Way It Does] +
Website feedback
This post is about a sadly neglected corner of the TL universe. As with any other corner there are mounds of crappy posts, endless repitition and occasionally the dusty gem. Being a noob I've spent a long time reading old threads. After reading all 70 odd pages of threads in the Feedback forum, I would like to take you through some of the more interesting ones.
Decline
There are many themes that seem to never end on this site. The constant moaning about how new posters just aren't up to scratch. The influx of newbies has apparently sent TL down the sewer so rapidly that it is bound for doom. Doom I tells ya, Doom! The cassandra's of this place forever wailing about how it used to be in my day. Well, except for 2003, 2006 and 2008, TL has apparently been in a constant state of decline (2004;2005;2007;2009; 2010; 2011)
State of TL Posting Standard's Since 2003
Not that the Feedback forum started well. The sum total of Meat's first Feedback thread was followed by Yo, fb and the surprisingly popular yo. But then things got rolling and we learned that Mani can’t spell but he wants to give and Rekrul wants a retard list. Perhaps most surprisingly someone ruined Stimey’s name, who would have thought?
Yes 2003 was a good year and breezing through pages from that bigone era you can't help but notice the flowering of mushroom clouds everywhere. It is no wonder that most posters that survived have some sort of coloured name. This was a time when Men were Men and Women were in the kitchen (more on this later).
Stimey Contributes
Before I start this, I want to point out that I was obviously not here when Stimey was. So it is not fair for me to poke fun at someone who cannot defend themselves. He was a very active contributer, at least in the feedback section. In fact for someone with his reputation he had some interesting ideas. From what I have read he may have been the spark for the Automated Ban List. An irony sure but certainly a welcome addition to these parts.
Of course 2004 wasn't all about the strangely named one, we saw the birth of the birthday icon and a thread to keep for the ages.
One of the things TL prides itself on is its consistency in banning policy. Over the course of seven years you could expect some slippage in standards but if you wanted to know how to survive a martyr this is your thread.
Girl Problems
Aside from the inappropriate use of certain words, it is clear that Moderate Temperature is not a fan of the girl blogs. This led him to declare as much earlier this year. What isn't so clear is that this has been an ongoing problem. Not that everything is so serious.
Problem? Saro is a GOD
There really shouldn't need to be a explanation for this, but some people don't take the time to appreciate what they have. So right now we are gonna take some time to say thanks to our lord of the monkeys, his awesomeness Saro.
A common phrase heard in the Saro household
Sadly, we don't see Saro around a lot anymore. Maybe he hides is places I don't venture. But what I can say is that I owe a lot to him. Also in 2006 we has some ban changes and Hot_Bid had some fun.
Debate
If the preceeding years where the 50's with Naz playing the role of Eisenhower and Stimey the unhappy beatnik then 2007 was definitely the 60's. Things really got a shake up with the appearance of SC2 on the horizon.
Debate of the forums
We had debates on tech threads, blogs and a petition to bring back kitties. Hell, even Disapearing Countries got a go.
Despite this 2007 was a productive year with PoP effectively rebuilding TL and guides on the Website History and How to Contribute. We even learnt where naughty kids belong.
Some things do change...
I said I would come back to it, so here it is. TL has no doubt grown dramatically and with that some things have been lost. I for one am gald we would no longer tolerate this kind of stuff. It is just a pity that we lost a poster who was willing to do the right thing.
Alright, some more fun. In 2008 we also learnt that haji has a strange choice of search terms and Brood thinks we should be able to ask people shit in blogs. Threads can also go anywhere.
Perhaps most importantly we learned that yubee is not a fan of clowns
He may have a point
In amongst all this fun and games Sonuvbob made some useful changes.
The year of the Hot_Bid
Alright every year is the year of the Hot_Bid but I would challenge people to bring something as awesome as this. Admittedly it was hard for me to include other threads in the same section as nothing compares. However the cupboard would look awefully bare if I did so here is one on Veterancy and one on Smileys.
If you have to ask...
Kraken it up...
2010 saw the release of the SC2 beta with it the hordes of ignorant louse tramping all over TL's lovely flower bed. The were calls for drastic action but strangely there were hopes of improved posting but these were quickly dashed. The whippesnappers even had the temerity to question the ten commandments albeit in an odd way. There was a travesty which we will never recover from but also one of baller's greatest. Tofu brought us a very interesting I thread.
I didn't till I did then I couldn't stop..
Where to now?
Aside from the obvious, what does 2011 have to teach us? Well I learnt that Mani has a ban service. I also learntwhy Naz loves us. There have been attempts at comfort and attempts at murder.
There has been trolling andwizardry; irony and mods being just plain mean.
Through of all this I've learnt that no matter how long you look back in TL's history, it is the people that have defined what TL represents. It is always fun, welcoming and different. If you want more proof, I will leave you with the following to chew on.
List of Threads by Year 2003 + Show Spoiler + 2004 + Show Spoiler + 2005 + Show Spoiler + 2006 + Show Spoiler + 2007 + Show Spoiler + 2008 + Show Spoiler + 2009 + Show Spoiler + 2010 + Show Spoiler + 2011 + Show Spoiler +
Personal + Show Spoiler [First and Only Thread] + + Show Spoiler [High Points] + + Show Spoiler [Low Point] +
Edit: After a bump from GMarshal I have to add this thread http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=279894 #Occupy Hot_Bid

Lol I wasn't around for any of this stuff, but this was a very fun read ^.^
So much trollery, I wish that stuff still happened today!

This is great, happy 1000th! (ps, for anyone reading this, please don't go through website feedback and bump everything you find interesting. Love n.die "rack jack" jokes)

Thanks guys! Glad you liked it.

So true! I don't want this blog to turn into a ban-fest.
Cheers!

i so thought it was gonna be about the spell feedback, and how it used to be dark archon and is now high templar...

What a wonderful read...makes me truly regret being one the noobs who didn't discover TL or Starcraft until Starcraft 2. So much amazing TL culture and history that I missed out on, sadly somehow it seems that the TL of today is somewhat different. I don't see as much of the tight-knit community in current threads as i do when I go back and read through the pages of the old ones, which is a habit of mine as well (<3 all the old Rekrul blogs).
That said, I've now been in love with TL and the amazing, one-of-a-kind community which has grown up around it for a year or so, and (unlike so many other games and websites) has continued to hold a consistent, perpetual place of respect and admiration in my heart.
I love TL.

You're welcome.
Also, it turns out it is actually a woman...or maybe a lamp.

That was a case of seeing the same thing everyday for weeks and not noticing it until you pointed it out. I can't stop seeing it now.

This is pretty much how feel as well. You clearly miss something by not being there at the start. That being said TL is an amazing collection of generally really smart people. There are also some things that have changed for the better.
The fact that posters like yourself and me can feel part of this site despite its history is an indication of why we keep coming back.
In short I love TL too
|
Was expecting Dark Archons and High Templar, possibly even Demon Hunters.
I am disappointed as I am terrified of clowns.
|
This is awesome! haha the messed up 3> TL.net XD
Thanks for compiling all these great moments!
|
the fact theres a thread bitching about declining quality back in 2007 i think its safe to say that all the bitching recently about the influx of sc2 people causing shit quality is just a nostalgiafest. then the recent storm of old bumps to introduce people to 'epic threads' which mostly contain lots of derp or stupid pictures mean that the history of this site is pretty typical .
thanks for another list of the older material though :D
|
To give you a tiny bit of feedback on this thread: "would of" is incorrect english, the correct version would be "would've" since the "'ve" part stems from "have".
I hope my feedback helped you!

Thanks for sharing all the moments us the newer users have missed! <3

Wowza, even though you think I'm doomed to eternal disneyland damnation, I have to say that this is an amazing blog!

Man, reading those old threads is always so hilarious. All the rampant abuse by (future) staff members.
Great post! Congratulations in 1k.

rofl @ lastshadow's girlfriend post at the end of the sexism thread. I had forgotten about that... that was a pretty good thread.

Or allow posts to only have a certain number of characters.
Just ideas, don't know how feasible they are.
Please be more liberal with the bannings too!
Old gold. Nice 1000th, some really cool posts to sift through :D

hot_bid trolling rage is amazing. who would have thought back then the two would become staff as well.

What a badass thread. You could sink so much time here. Stimey was funny.

It's funny how the one common theme to all groups- forums like these, religious groups, or political organizations, clubs and even just circles of friends- is that each think they are smarter than everyone. Every group, big to small, kind of thrives on this idea that we have it all figured out and there is the huge mass of morons out there that we need to educate about how it is. What makes it funny is that EVERYBODY thinks like this. Everyone has something figured out that all the morons need to learn.
This is fairly prevalent on most sites, but especially so on TL. A lot these threads are funny if you look at some of the pompous responses coming from the peanut gallery. You would swear to god that everyone on this site had a PhD, was in GrandMasters, was A+ in ICCup and is 6 and a half feet tall built like Atlas. Though as I said, this goes with every group- sometimes the anonymity of the internet just makes it all that more apparent.
chill out

I clicked on all of baller's spoilers ... I was at least hoping for a clever message..

Old school TL was hilarious. Wish I'd been a part of it. Happy 1000th

very nice, a walk through memory lane.
How on earth did you get through this without talking about the change name thread?
|
its irony, i once made a blog, stated very clear thats its personal emotion/complain on TL streaming system, THEN a CERTAIN SOMEBODY moved it into the feedback thread. THEN a CERTAIN INDIVIDUAL read the thread and thought i was insulting TL staff etc and think my thread is not suitable for feedback, temp ban 1 month..... Its funny how i cant even correct him since ban on TL = media black out, cant pm, cant do shit. After that a while, the streaming system actually changed.... not exactly the way my feedback suggested, but its pretty damn close...
yeah, there are stuffs that i could write feedback for the website but after that event? Hell no.
|
Pretty ballin' post. Just testing out the instant posting :D

Got to leave something for the kiddies to discover on their own
By the time I got to the threads on the front page I had over 60 threads bookmarked. But yeah that thread is ridiculous. The number of single post people who asked for the name to be changed

GOLD MINE! I've been reading old threads for an hour and there are so many left. Please stop making me procrastinate doing work.
|
Oh my god, the year of the Hot_Bid was an awesome read :D I loved the LoTR stories, including the Mani analogy! And the veterancy labels were pure gold.
Good digging!
|
It is funny to look back at the older posts from way way back half the people are perma banned and a good number of the posts would get warnings if you posted them today, but hell everyone knew everyone else back then.

|
Excellent blog. I love reading about the olden times :D And I agree with you completely, TL has always and will always be defined by the people that come here.

Awesome blog. I think I just spent 90 minutes reading every link, while working a bit in between .
I am interested in who this STIMEY d okgm fish is, he keeps coming back. The next hour I will be wasting on reading posts he wrote.
Also, THANK YOU for this http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=131500. I have raged so hard on the idiotic ordering of the search results. Never noticed I could select different ways, I guess that makes me the idiot.

Holy crap Idiot of the Week. That would have been an absolute cracker.
Oh god Charlie with the MPS ROFLCAKES.

Great blog. A good three hours well spent. Clean toes, larger pay-check and a few laughs richer. Over-time can be grand - sometimes. Seeing how i spent 3 hours reading all that stuff, i cant even phantom the time needed for all the research and typing it up. I salute you, and happy 1000th.
Some one needs to make a Fakesteve compilation for their anniversary post! That guy cracks me up every time...
