The above is a BUILD ORDER page from the mighty Liquipedia.

What's wrong with this picture? I can't see any build orders.

Sure you'll say "you're just lazy," but that's BS.

Let's say I'm visiting the NY Times to read an article. But guess what? Every time I'm reading an article, the part that I want to know about is hidden, and I have to click on it to reveal it. This is completely retarded and unnecessary. The NY Times site would die and whoever did this would be fired so fast.

The overuse of spoilers and other hide-this-scripts is ridiculous. Which legitimate news and article sites do this to annoy their readers? What ever happened to actually learning how to format pages and paragraphs?

I guess it's a fair criticism, but I think your analogy to the NYT is unfounded. I mean, imagine if I wanted to read the article and this massive list of numbers and buildings was pushing all the content down. It just depends what you're looking for.

The reason for us at liquipedia doing this is layout. A good layout on a page is really important and bombarding a new user with information just makes the whole page easier to read. As you see in the article you took a screenshot off there are two variations of this build. If these two variations would both be listed as soon as you get on the page you wont get a proper overview of the page and the build might seem more confusing then it is.

But this is not set in stone, if most of our users dislike this way of working then ofc we'll change but this is the first complaint as far as I know so I do not see it beeing changed right now.

tbh, i was expecting something along the lines of "wow you have no life" at the end of that spoiler. at least it would have been slightly amusing.

Layout?? Right...... the page is called "xxx BUILD ORDER". The most important thing to show on this page would be the build order itself. The other text is merely accessory to the core subject that is the build order.

As for formatting, spoilers are never useful or necessary, that is why companies who operate websites don't use them (Wikipedia, Blizzard, the world).

Example: this is a long page (http://us.starcraft2.com/features/heroes/raynor.xml). Instead of putting random spoilers every 30 seconds for things, the people who wrote this page simply formatted the pages to include those things in a streamlined fashion.
