I ve tried to give it a fair chance by listening to it (the second vid). But I have to say it sounds really damn cheesy -- as formulaic and square as it gets, the "metal" only a veneer.

This is much better.

Anyone have some suggested listening for a guy just starting to get into metal? Music that most people listen to is trash... and I am looking for something other then trance/techno.

any idea which type of metal you want to listen to?

like what type of vocals (clean or growl)

fast, slower? etc

anyways what got me into metal is early Metallica and Iron Maiden (yes, very mainstream, but everyone has to start somewhere), so check that out

Had a friend suggest parkway drive to me. They sound pretty good. I have only really listened to two or three Maiden songs... guess I should get into that. I am pretty much open to anything really. I just like music in general.

I realize this doesn't really help you at all haha. Just trying to branch out musically. I am teaching myself guitar and I think this kind of stuff would be fun to learn/play.

Metal has its roots in rock, so Black Sabbath is a pretty mainstream start.

You should know about Metallica, Pantera, Maiden, Ozzy, and other historically significant bands (even if they're less relevant today to a younger crowd).

Lamb of God and Machine Head rock, imo.

You have a lot of options. There's good and bad quality in every genre, you just have to have an open mind.

haha metallica stuff is pretty simple and fun to learn on guitar (talking about the rhythm parts of course)

but yeah, checking out Iron Maiden is definitely a good choice. They are way more than just Run to the Hills and The Number of the Beast (overrated songs imo)

I think Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God is untouchable. Death metal isn't defined by a raspy voice, just the theme of death - so I appreciate technical finesse and a moving melody when I can find it.

No that's not death metal and thats a silly definition. If there's a country song that sings about death that's not death metal of course... Same thing if there's death themed metalcore - it's still metalcore.

What got me into metal are the extreme skill requirements. If you're looking for technical stuff I can recommend this German death metal band

There is no extreme playing skill requirements to playing heavy metal

its just pure power

Necrophagist is shit.
Decaying Form is fun as hell.
Lamb Of God is shitty groove/metalcore.
Besiger is my lover because he posted Slugathor.

Less mainstream and more Immolation, Ignivomous, Vasaeleth, Portal, Defeated Sanity, Convulse, Interment, and Necrovation plox.

If someone's really interested in heavy metal but doesn't know much (besides Priest, Maiden, Accept etc. that everyone knows) this is a really good site:
http://vibrationsofdoom.com/test/index.html
Hundreds of records available to stream, some of these are very hard to find anywhere

Cirith Ungol, Cloven Hoof, Manilla Road, Sacrilege, Saint Vitus, etc etc records
If you have to ask, you don't know.

I highly recommend www.metal-archives.com for easy access info on every goddamn band you can think of, though I'm sure most of the people here know the site by reputation at least, it's basically the TLPD of metal with user submitted reviews (which you can choose to ignore if you wish, there are some very good reviewers and a lot of bad ones. There is an approval process, but it's obviously not going to be perfect). The forums used to be really good in like 2006, not "TL of metal" but still, and now they're somewhere in the "TL SC2 forums of metal" area of quality.

Also, thread needs some FUCKIN' THRASH.

Agree with what you've said here. Don't understand why people like Necrophagist so much... just sounds like some guy who practiced a LOT of guitar and decided to record his exercises, to be honest.

I almost saw portal at Maryland Deathfest this past May (Autopsy was there, Gorod, Naglfar, Melechesh, and a bunch of other amazing bands) but didn't go .________.

I enjoy the solos, but that's it.

Here's my current Band of the Now, courtesy of Boestheus.

Though that isn't strictly metal, I suppose
