i play ddr occasionally and have a decent mat that is for ps2 which i bought a connector for and hooked it up to my pc. .
i use the mat strictly for ddr but recently i found out that the arrows actually take place of the keyboard arrows, so if i put it on the floor and sit in front of it i can scroll through pages with my feet pretty easily.. not really practical, but i do it out of boredom mostly. .
so naturally this got me thinking about using the feet arrows as the keyboard arrows and moving the screen around in starcraft.. it works, and at first i was clumsy as hell with it but with some adjustments to speed, sensitivity, etc. . i ended up being pretty good at it and found it actually useful in huge army vs army situations. .
so.. is using this cheating? i don't think the iccup anti-hack picks up on it. . and if the community deems it as an advantage i will stop but i must say i still suck with it (D+ zerg was best rank) and it's TONS of fun.. plus a little exercise in the heat of the moment
so even if you think this is wrong, i suggest you at least try it, that is if you have a console to usb adaptor and a dance mat. :D
That's interesting as hell and I'd love to see it in action, but I'm going to have to call that an unfair advantage. Having to scroll across the map is a constraint that forces choice, which having the mat nullifies, imo.
That's pretty ingenious, boxer would love it since he used the arrow keys when he played.
I'm gonna go ahead and say use it, but good luck trying to use it anywhere else, and in the highly unlikely situation that you become very good it would be looked down upon heavily. So learning to play with it and then taking it away when it gets serious is only fucking yourself.
I have to say that using the mat to scroll is pretty cool hahaha. If you can use it and it's set up I'd say sure use it. Obviously you'll have to do some explaining if you want to use it in tournaments haha. Pretty cool.

Even remapping hotkeys to different places on your keyboard is considered cheating in starcraft, so of course this is cheating.
However I agree with the 'As long as you aren't planning on using it in a tournament, this doesn't really matter...so go for it' sentiment.

Yes OP asked for people's opinion on this.
so if you put your foot up on your desk and press the arrow keys with it thats cheating too?
No, you can handle you're keyboard however you want. Thing is, he uses an additional and non standard keyboard. You cannot use some big gamepad with all the keys mapped on starcraft keystrokes either. (or macroing keys, that hits "0p" automatically every 13 sec)

This is going to be funny. I'm tempted to set this up too it sounds fun and i can finally tell my opponents " yeah i just beat you using my feet. sup. "
Technically, you're remapping keys on your keyboard. So yes, it is "cheating." Kespa would certainly say no to it. No one other than Kespa would really care all that much I feel.
If, however, you got a keyboard that had this enormous extension that placed the four arrow keys at your feet, I think you can claim "Custom Keyboard." You could also claim that your keyboard is awesome.
This is way to awesome to be deemed cheating. I would LOVE to see someone rock up at a lan event with a ddr pad and start whacking away with his feet in the middle of fights haha
I don't find it cheating, He isn't remapping anything it's just a different input device it's like saying that people using Zboards for FPS are cheating because all of their keys are conveniently placed. Anyone can do this and it sounds plug and play to me. Right on dude :D
hahahahahah omg this has got to be the funniest thing i've read the whole week
you should make a video and contact boxer or something, he always took his left hand off the left side of the keyboard and used the arrow keys during intense micro battles because he didnt want his cursor to leave the center of the screen.
this is really funny, would like to see a video or something haha

Edit: Also, that is pretty awesome OP.
i disagree that doing something that requires more effort for the same result.. than it would take normally is cheating

But he has remapped his keys to another thing that isn't his keyboard.
He did not remap anything at all, the device works as the arrow keys without any modification.
I remember a thread, (or maybe it was even a rule for some event) that you can't remap hotkeys for sc, so like a protoss couldn't make their probe hotkey something other than p so that it was closer to their left hand. Now I admit I was wrong about the use of the word remapping in this instance (I'm not well versed in the computer world, I thought it was a catch-all) but the point still stands that he is moving his arrow keys away from their normal location on the keyboard. My understanding is that under accepted sc tournament rules that would be considered cheating...or at the very least he would have to be very persuasive to get the tournament organizer to let him do it.
As I said though, I have no problem with it just on iCCup, and I honestly doubt that anyone would. In fact I wouldn't mind if he was my opponent in a tournament and he did this. But the answer to the question "Is this cheating" is yes, according to my understanding of the (possibly outdated?) rules of tournament sc.
Also, just to prove or destroy my point, any tsl2 staff want to comment on whether or not this would have been ok to do in tsl2?

I disagree that this requires more effort. (maybe physically yes, but mentally and apm wise I see this as an advantage.) Once he gets good at it he will be able to micro large battles without mouse-scrolling and without his left hand ever leaving the area where all the relevant hotkeys are.
You must attend a TL LAN and come equipped with you comp, keyboard, mouse, and most importantly your DDR pad.
I mean... if you win TSL using it then it's cheating. But I kind of doubt that'd happen. If you can manage to make use of it so it's actually a useful tool in-game then I think you should do it just for the lols.
you should be allowed to use this in tournaments, but only you - because you came up with it, and you aren't high level enough to win TSL or anything, and because it's awesome
That is totally awesome. Plus like you said you got to D+ zerg, I doubt playing a little footsie with kerrigan would really help out all that much anyway :D. And definitely not enough to be construed as cheating.
That's pretty cool. Technically, if you're using more than the keyboard and mouse, I think it's cheating. Either that, or whatever progamers do is fine. 5/5
