In which there is a look back • a discussion of trolling • a call to arms • thanks and congrats • a look ahead
A Look Back The past 1000 posts have been somewhat less glorious than posts in my previous 3000. Many have been in forums you can't even see unless you're staff or someone cool. Most of them have been in the glorious EVE Thread (I mean....seriously, I alone have 18 pages of replies to that thread). Others have been news, some have been awful.
I spent a lot of time working on Liquipedia and blowing up underwaterspaceships (that's an EVE reference, by the way). I've streamed some L4D and Portal 2. In general, I feel like I've been more productive than normal.
Maybe it's because I was made into official staff (hurray puzzle piece icon!) and told that I have to actually behave now.
I seriously dislike walls of text
A Discussion of Trolling But that didn't stop me from trolling the fuck out of everyone.
Many people don't seem to realize what a good troll is. Going into a political thread and posting "X is a fucking nazi idiot who should resign and let a real man take his place" is not trolling. Posting "your [sic] a fag" is not trolling. General insulting is not trolling.
True trolling is an art. It's subtle. It's intellectual. It's hard to catch. And that's what makes it awesome. Honestly, I thought my tattoo blog would be easy to spot. I hadn't put much effort into it, after all. But I'll break it down, seeing as how so many people didn't realize what I was doing. My post, in the simplest terms, was this:
Tell me the most perfect, unique, forever fashionable, meaningful thing to get a tattoo of which is also relatively painless
And nobody caught on, which is half the fun. 3 pages in it's great to see someone post something along the lines of "oh shit, he got us! Good one!" But I didn't get that. I was disappointed a bit by that
Although, surprisingly, I did get a few good ideas (elmizzt's I particularly liked). In all honesty, I know what I want and where and when. Thanks to everyone who participated!
Also I'm still annoyed that back in February I posted news which revealed the LP coins (albeit in an early rendition) but nobody even noticed. Where's that insane attention to detail I've seen?
Seriously!
A Call to Arms Yes! That's right. I'm fond of Liquipedia. This is mostly due to the fact that I don't think they'll let me have a ban button, but it's also because I used LP1 so much back when I played Brood War, and I felt a bit weird not helping out somehow.
It all started way back on April 5th, 2010 (holy shit over a year). At that time, LP was garnering support by offering beta keys to people who contributed. So I decided to make a page about CauthonLuck's dastardly cheese which I really liked. From there I just kept going. I did earn my beta key, and that was a great day. But my old school sense of contributing to the community kept me chugging along. I remember coming to TL and seeing "Active: 400, Logged in: 75" at the top left. In those days, everyone knew everyone, and there were a sparse 20 or so boards. Nowadays, there's regularly around 3000 people logged in (holy balls), and at least 56 different boards (I suspect many many more). I feel the need to help out all those people who today are as I was a few years ago...lost and confused in such a complicated game, relying on Liquipedia for guidance.
And so I call all of you, good citizens, to get editing. Contribute something. Anything. Below are pages which are all marked as stubs. Stub pages are those deemed to have not enough information, but are still worth having (there are plenty of pages marked for deletion due to sucking hardcore like). I implore all of you to go to a couple and spruce them up. Whether this means adding new content, revising current content, or revising the styling....that's up to you. But please contribute. It only takes a few minutes and you may help someone out. What's even better is that you don't have to be #1 megagrandmasters with 32948 ladder points or anything (I suck horribly at SC2, for instance)! Contribute what you can. LP staff will love you.
DOOOOO IIIIIIITTTTTT
Thanks and Congrats I once again extend a big thanks to all the staff! TL is great, and I'm glad to be part of the family.
Particular thanks go out to • Liquipedia staff - fun group of guys • Everyone who has a ban button - for not banning me (god knows many of my posts are terrible) • p4NDemik - Portal 2 Co-op was a blast with you, especially the 5 portal challenge and that last level • Tort de lini and Ares[Effort] - I will make editors of you yet • DA HATCHURY - • Every SC2 player, pro and amateur alike, for making this wonderful community viable
Of course there are congratulations to go around! • Xxio, disciple - reds! • Ares[Effort], motbob - banlings! • infinitestory - real staff at last! • Murderotica - (1)2000 posts! • Antoine - new icon! • Spica, white_horse - staff! • salle - LIQUIPEDIA STAFF BEST STAFF • DA HATCHURY - mofo archon kill • Me - I still haven't had a smoke in a long time. Way to go, me!
No thanks to • All the TSL players who ruined my bracket :< • People who don't know the difference between Merge, Stop, and Yield signs
Speaks for itself, really...
A Look Ahead I plan to keep going with Liquipedia. My current plans involve things like my campaign for SC2 Boxing with motbob, world domination, and getting MORE POWER for the Liquipedia servers. Perhaps if I get a ban button I'll ban a city, as is customary of iCCup admins....

Why would you want to ban a whole city?

Grats on 4k.
On another note: I feel like a lot of people put trolling on a pedestal. You seem to do this also by saying that ' real ' trolling is an art, subtle, and intellectual. Because you put trolling on a pedestal you aspire to do it yourself, or look for others to do it just so you can recognize it and feel good about yourself.
Instead, have you tried looking at trolling and seeing how it is for the most part useless? If everyone posted without the intent of baiting people into discussing a topic that doesn't matter and just posted to discuss and share what they really thought wouldn't TL be a better place? Wouldn't people reduce misusing the word troll if we stopped putting it in this upper echelon of intelligence?
As you can tell, I think trolling and anyone who does it, or admires trollers themselves are detrimental to a forum like this one. This isn't to say there isn't a time and place for it, just that it gets out of hand.
Just a thought.

You should really edit out the "every sc2 player for making this community viable". and sub in another word.

Just a thought. Trolling once in a while is fine, as long as it's done well. It's people who can't stop trolling, and people who troll badly (as I said before, the "your a fag" trolls) that make it so hated and bad. I think a few posts out of 4000 being completely troll posts is just fine.
Also, all art is useless. That's why it's art and not something else, like a chair.
I was explaining what a decent troll is like in the hopes that people would learn and stop being so dumb because they think they are funny.

There are plenty of communities that exist which are totally not viable at all, and are only sustained by huge sponsors for a brief period of time (Halo, Call of Duty, CS:S [lots of shooters come to think of it...]) whereas StarCraft evolved out of the fans and players, not the sponsors.

Don't quite see how you could make an analogy about trolling and art. Art is a medium of communication almost as old as humans. Art creates a range of emotions, causes wars, makes people cry in joy, and expresses things words sometimes cannot. Trolling is either understood or not. Best case scenario for a troller they are sitting behind a monitor feeling smug about themselves. Also not so sure if someone on staff should call posters dumb because they don't understand the ' high art ' of trolling. Maybe they don't care, maybe they really aren't intelligent enough to do it right....but that is their choice. I got warned for calling a guy an idiot once.
I agree that a decent troll from 4000 is just fine, but 0 trolls in 10,000 posts is fine too. Agree to disagree

But you have 4,003 posts.

And trolling is a recognized tool of debate (it's called "playing the Devil's Advocate"). And why can't I call people dumb? Just because I'm staff doesn't mean I'm stripped of my right to have an opinion.
But whatever. We can call the debate here. We've both made our points and I doubt either of us will back down.

Grats on your 4k posts! I read your tattoo blog and i'm not sure why you expected anyone to catch on. I mean, no one got upset or angry, so you didn't really provoke any emotional responses from anyone which means you either weren't trolling or your troll failed. Just posting random internet lies isn't trolling and to me is much less entertaining.

trolling all good, just don't let it get out of hand tofucake

But some of the replies were genuinely helpful, so overall it was still beneficial. I generally don't follow politics so I can't do much there, and I'm not about to start a shitstorm by doing something with religion or SC2 balance.....
