I think the NASL already spread themselves way too thin with this endeavour, but having already said that, it's not really my place to comment on their business plan. Their strategy seems to be to come stomping in and be the biggest dog, and it's that strategy that got hundreds, if not thousands of people, to pay $20 without having seen a single minute of their production. When split more than 3 ways, time and money disappear extremely quickly. The TSL has the backbone of the TL staff and the TL community. Volunteers know they are volunteers. The NASL has monetized their staff positions, and have largely cut themselves off from volunteer help. Well, I guess they're partnered with WellPlayed but I don't even know what that means. Regardless, it's a lot of work for few hands. So the NASL relied on Justin.tv automatically recording their stream - A great temporary solution, but not ideal in the long run. "Trim the VODs and upload them to a spoiler free page." Yes, that seems like an easy thing to do, but realistically it's another 4 hours of work per day for one of your 8 staff members. "Install better lighting." Sounds great also, but your staff is most likely already working 8-16 hour days 5-7 days a week. It's a big commitment to ask them to come test stuff. Money also goes quickly. I've read ridiculous thing like the following: "Hire a PR consultant." I know the NASL looks like a huge company in the SC world, but their balance sheet is tiny. You don't go hiring consultants at this level. "Hire an art director." See above. The NASL is doing well. They're running a broadcast with the stretched resources they have. If they can grind out an ever-improving season 1, then maybe big things will improve with some downtime and a little more money. This is how any company starts: They grind it out until they catch a small break, make small improvements, and continue to grow. The NASL is no different. How you can help:1. Don't be a moron. 2. Help. See page 59 of this thread. Rather than berate them about what they're doing wrong and how you can fix their images in 15 minutes if they ask you, why don't you be proactive and just resize the images and post them with permission for them to use? It's not your responsibility to do it, but it would be nice and would help them out. 3. Offer small suggestions. They're not going to build a new stage or take the broadcast outside - it's too much of a change. They're not going to replace Gretorp after week 1. They can, however, rebalance sound levels and install a sound compressor (or whatever it was called ). That was a great, small, actionable suggestion.
I disagree, Chill. The NASL is where it is because of poor planning (note: my favorite saying -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_Ps_(military_adage)). Do you remember when Day9 did his show that was a follow-up to his King of the Beta tournament? When he was talking about the planning stage for the KOTB it went something like this:
Day9: We should have Tasteless LIVE FROM KOREA! Someone: That would be awesome! Day9: And Unicorns! Someone: I LOVE ME SOME UNICORNS!
An exaggeration of an exaggeration, but I think you see my point. Day9 talks about "drinking the koolaid". Seems to me like the folks behind the NASL were drinking a bit too much of their own koolaid. From what I have been told by people is that during the planning stage there were folks from the community who reached out to the NASL to offer suggestions. They were universally met with this response, "This is our baby, we got this." Sadly, no they do not.
Do not get me wrong. The people behind the NASL ought to be lauded for their enthusiasm, bravery (it's scary being the first one in a market), and work effort. Where they have failed is in utilizing the resources of the people that make up this audience. Not just Joe Bloe viewer like my friends and I. There are people within this community that knew the EXACT challenges the NASL would face. By and large, they were not consulted or their input was dismissed.
Unfortunately, there people involved with the NASL who knew exactly what the stakes were should this league fail. Another North American E-sports league down the tube means more apprehension from the businesses that we need to attract to have a thriving competitive SC2 scene. To me, that is the most disappointing aspect of this debacle. You don't hire your friends when the stakes are that high. You hire the best person for the job that will accept what wage you've allocated from your budget.
Did you play MMOs, Chill? Generation 2 MMORPGs consisted of Everquest, DAOC, Shadowbane, etc. Everquest 2 and WOW were setup as generation three. EverQuest 2, in an effort to beat WOW to market, launched ahead of schedule. Horrible, horrible game launch. The game never recovered and is a niche product. WOWs launch, while it had it's issues, was much smoother. WOW has gone on to redefine it's market space. I would compare NASL's launch to EverQuest 2. My concern is that will there be businesses willing to back "our" WOW given recent and past history?
I feel like I've chided them enough. On to what they can do to improve immediately.
1. Gretorp and Incontrol need to cast games, outside of the NASL, en masse. They need time working together. This should have happened long before the league released their first show. Gretorp is obviously not yet comfortable broadcasting. By that I mean, when he is thinking, talking and watching the action on screen the words do not flow naturally from thought to utterance. Again, this is a skill that comes with time and should have been developed/honed prior to the league kicking off. Also, they need to pick roles. One as play-by-play, the other as color/analysis. As they are more familiar with each other then they can volley back and forth like Tastosis, but get the basics down first.
2. They need to fix the VOD schema. It's entirely broken and reeks of something that was thrown together at the last minute. Point one affects all viewers. Point two only affects those who purchased premium access, other wise it would be point one.
3. They need to fix their own images. This is a commercial venture. I am sorry, but we are past crowd sourcing at this stage. I understand that they have a finite number of hours and these images may have been backburner'ed. That said, it seems like they were unaware of the issues inherent to broadcast television (always more man hours in tomorrow than there are in today and yesterday).

This hits the nail on the head regarding my concerns with the NASL. The entire league was advertised as the next big thing, a level of professionalism we haven't seen in NA Starcraft.. EVER.
This was completely and totally dishonest. I know they have good intentions and I want the NASL to succeed, I'd love to see NASL topple the freaking NFL/MLB etc., this isn't some blind hate mongering against NASL.
I feel less people would be so critically harsh on the NASL if they came from the start with a more honest message, 'hey we have a small team and big dreams. we're going to start the best league we possibly can and throw up a huge prize pool, please support us through our trials and help us become the premiere esports organization.'
Through the hype and build up I honestly thought NASL was going to be provided by some big time investors who were going to dump a ton of money into eSports to make a professional product that hasn't been seen in NA but they lied. A studio, professional production, the works, a major attempt to revolutionize starcraft and gaming in general in the west. This isn't what we received. The NASL is a couple of investors who some how trusted large sums of money to 8 amateurs. Passionate amateurs but nonetheless, amateurs. So when I look back at the build up and see the current product it jades me. They knew they couldn't live up to their own hype as they knew the limitiations of their team yet they still tried to dupe us.

Hi - Paying subsciber here. Loving the NASL so far.
I have to give massive credit to your transparency about the problems (eg - player no show/walk over/rescheduling etc) it's very hard to be the bearer of bad news, but I appreciate and respect you guys so much more for it - so much better than watching a broken stream for hours with no update on when it would be fixed *cough*MLG*cough*.
As I'm a Brit and I can't stay up every night - I rely on the vods to see everything. Someone else might have mentioned this (it's a big thread) or you might have addressed this (not caught up with all vods yet) but I think it would be a big improvement to play around with the vods if possible on Justin TV. Chop the long pre-caster introduction/music off - that just wastes my time and bandwith. And if possible cut the VODS into chunks. Intro segment, then another chunk for each of the series (I think individual games per vod would be too fiddly and length would be a spoiler).
Also - maybe have a download option? I might want to download everything and watch it away from my internets - but if there are no downloads to curtail non subscribers from viewing vods, fair enough
Keep up the good work. <3 Hearts <3

2) Gretorp - I'm fine with his casting. He isn't my favorite Caster, but I think he's doing allright. Only issue with him is the uninterested look he seems to have whenever iNControL is talking when we're in the studio. He just seems to be in outer space sometimes.
.
Yea what is with that, is he so self absorbed he cant even pretend to look interested. Alot of the time his eyes roll into the back of his head or go all lazy when hes not talking (sometimes even when he is talking) I dunno i just cant get behind gretorp as a caster its not like hes the worst caster ever but hes just not the right fit for the NASL
Inc and Gretorp seem to have some issues in the background or something they almost seem passive aggresive towards each other. Maybe its just jokes but when tasteless and artosis do it i know they are just giving each other a hard time as friends. It sounds alot more menacing when i hear it out of gretorp or Incontrol.
Im just extremely dissapointed with the way they advertised how the league was going to be. If they hadnt put our expectations so high we wouldnt be complaining, I also wouldnt have bought a seasons pass if they were more honest about it in saying that it will get better over time etc etc instead of saying UNMATCHED PRODUCTION VALUES, Proffesional starcraft league unlike north america has ever seen before. All these things have proven to be untrue as i see better tournaments from much much smaller organizations. I really think you should have had an approach more like the IPL, Make it free test the waters in the first season and make it a small tournament, expand when youve worked out the kinks and you know what you are dealing with.
As a paying customer i just feel like the money was snatched out of my hand based on huge exagerations (lies?) had i known the true nature of this league would i have chosen to support it? maybe in the future but not right now. Ah well ive learned my lesson and i hope to not waste another 25 dollars so frivulously again anytime soon.
I think its funny how they just brushed off all the critisicm they were receiving months before the league started with a nonchalant attitude like, dont worry weve got this, this is our baby. You took advice on some things like format of the tournament and rules, but right now those things are the least of anyones concern. Quality is what you promised, and it so far has not been delivered, of course there are going to be a bunch of pissed off people who spent 25 dollars based on huge exagerations by employees of the NASL. Russ did seem more humble then others involved but we rarely heard from him. The cocky attitude made others think that for sure you guys must have made something for esports that we could all be proud of, but in the end it was just talk.
Heres to week 2 being 10 times better than week 1 (hopefully)

Which i am admitting is totally a fair price for what they provide, if it was done like we are suggesting.
But i keep hearing, lay off of us it was done on-the-fly, we're learning, we only have 8 people, oh woe is us, bare with it...
If that's the case then it shouldn't have been a charge first approach, or done a two weeks, free then we'll charge. you do realize we bought a product, whether or not it's is 25 dollars, 10 dollars or 100 dollars, we are customers. We have every right to be "morons".
We do cut some slack, we do, but there are MAJOR problems. Not occasional slip ups. The SC community for the most part is an awesome group of people, but they know when they are being served a turd but are told not to worry it will transform into a gold necklace, just wait... No one forced you to buy their product. In fact, I would argue that buying something without ever seeing it should be thought of as a charitable donation and not a purchase. I didn't buy the pass because I don't donate to companies. Now, seeing the product, I don't think it's worth $25. That doesn't mean I won't watch it and support them without money. It's not their responsibility to meet your imagined expectations. I agree, but there was still false advertising in what they promised vs what was delivered. It just makes people feel like idiots for beleiving them wich is not very good attitude to have from your customer base.
Honestly i just felt like i was doing my good deed for the day and supporting esports, but i honestly think a product like this will hurt esports in the long run if it does not improve quickly, because if it doesnt viewers and ratings will drop like flies.
IPL really seems to know what they are doing ,the whole league will be free in high def (similair to TSL who definetely knows what they are doing , by far my favourite online competition you guys do a great job with fewer actual staff but a huge community to help support you :D) and they are doing a tester league first wich is much smaller in the first season to test the waters, had the NASL done something similair they would be in a far better situation i dont think anyone would be complaining had they said "hey guys this is the first season we are just testing the waters hear and more seasons are planned but we want to do this showcase tournament to work out some kinks and show you guys what weve got" that is the way to go about it IPL knows this and i have no doubt they will deliver (they have huge backing its probably not even comparable to the NASL)

This!, The fact that they hired friends to run the tournament and players to put in the tournament, was always something that made me have some hesitation towards the nasl but Icontrol was so positive about the whole thing (when i heard him at MLG talking about it, i actually got pretty excited despite all my doubts) the point is you have to hire the right people for the job not amateurs. Sure hooking your friends up is cool and all ,but look at the situation they have been put in now, half of the sc community is breathing down their necks and is quite furious, they havent retained viewers and it really just doesnt seem like they are going to beable to fix all the stuff that has gone wrong anytime soon.
Hiring people without broadcasting experience to take on such an ambitious tournament was probably the worst mistake the NASL has made and it is the root of all of their problems and could be perhaps the downfall of the league.

You must be new to RTS Esports ventures . This has happened 10 times before to the Starcraft community and it's always been shit.
The lesson: Don't ever believe the hype until you actually have something on your screen. The fact that the NASL came in with so much hype is a double-edged sword: They surely got a ridiculous amount of ground-level subscriptions with nothing of merit, but they also built false expectations that could never be met in season one.

Whether it was over-hyped or not is completely irrelevant because that is real life. It is like none of you guys have ever dealt with a cable company. Those cocksuckers blatantly oversell their product (listing rates in UP TO and megabits rather than bytes to be deliberately misleading), don't give a shit about feedback (despite years of poor customer service awards), and steal more of your money that god because they have a monopolies in most areas.
Get real guys, put this small group of passionate guys in perspective. You would think they were Comcast for all the vitriol. You have a right to voice your opinion of course but keep in mind these guys are listening to the feedback and care. Save some hate for the real rip off artists that are futt bucking us every day.

As handsome as Gretorp and Incontrol are it is hard for a half hour of their faces to keep the audience captivated. They should show clips exemplifying what they are talking about during the pre-show discussion.
one way of doing this would be to commentate in an analytical way a short 3-5 min clip of the major points of each game, this would give the viewer a visual as well as auditory narrative as the each players style.

I have not regretted a dime of what I spent, and I've been watching the videos like crazy.

I would really really love to stay and watch, but I cant seem to tune in for more than a few minutes without getting bored for some reason with the NASL... I love gretorp and incontrol and from the games I have seen the quality of the matches has been great - but I just cant seem to get into it.
Perhaps once they get down to more meaningful matches it will be different! Although I doubt it... it somehow feels very sterile and bland to me and I cannot put my finger on why.
p.s. Please god someone take 2k or so of of the prize money and buy some decent, studio quality microphones! I'm sure the players wouldn't mind!
|
Watching now Grubby v Fenix, just saying in-game music could be a taaaaaad quieter. Just a little bit imo :D
|
remove the 30 minute long pre-game talk
instead just use music like TSL and/or make a highlight video covering things that happened in the past week showcasing great micro, battles, and/or engagements and repeat the video until actual broadcast time
devote a brief amount of time (maybe like 5 minutes or less) about players and the matchup (race, strats, maps) before the game starts
|
the sound quality is absolutely terrible. I feel like I'm listening to an old radio out in the country where I am barely receiving reception. In fact the quality as i'm watching it right now is so poor that it's literally not watchable.
My suggestion is to reconsider doing this show live until you work out all of the technical issues. There's really no reason this needs to be live anyway since everybody is playing online - you might as well just be watching a replay.
