But Tiger Woods is really really good at golf Most people are not like Tiger Woods But you probably can get used to it, if you stick with it enough Yeah it really is never too late to change hotkey setups ever. It just takes a little longer to get used to. I've recently changed from having rax, fact, port on 3,5,6 respectively to having them on 5,6,7. It took 20 ish games to get used to but now I'm doing it as fast as I was before and I have an extra control group for armies.

I think blizzard was really on the right track with the whole grid hotkey setup. They put all the hotkeys in one small area. The problem with grid keys is that they are not optimally setup. A lot of the actions are very inefficient (like z and x to build structures).
|
My intuition tells me Grid is not the answer. Too much stuff is bunched together and the hand combinations that are fastest for me are not necessarily close (for example shift+2 is very comfortable, 5s or 6s is very comfortable.
However, something like you're doing (having a standard button for primary spell, secondary spell, etc. space bar for attacking, stuff like that) is a smart play along with mixing up control group keys across the board. I am slowly starting to tweak the hotkeys a little bit at a time.
|
I use a hotkey setup with the same idea. I also put some thought into it and came up with a similar setup as the ones of the op. I really recommend to at least give it a try. I think for many people it will take no more than maybe 50 games to get very comfortable with this.
I played like 20 games and a couple of games vs cpu and I already feel better with the new setup than with the old one, although I played BW for a long time. For example my macro has become much better, just because checking my production facilities and producing units is much easier.
|
I think using spacebar to put a command that you press most often would be the best idea. Personally I am going to experiment with select all larvae as spacebar (as a Zerg player). Or select all hatcheries. These two are most often pressed when I play.
|
I use the Grid hotkey setup with a few specifications. Control groups for buildings are on F1-F4 and army 1-3. The Attack Command is on Q and move command on T (who uses hotkey for move command? ^^) Idle workers now on ^. This works pretty good for me. Only one hotkey sucks, the lifting one. It is on L and i miss it like everytime..

I have tried is as both my primary control group as well as the attack command using the space bar. Both of them seem to work very well.
If you are going to use it for macro I would suggest using a combo that is efficient. together. This is why I use 1 for all hatcheries and 2 for select larvae as it is very efficient. I then use 2 for drones since tons of these every game and leads to the combo 1,2,222... to spam drones. furthermore the 1,2 combo lends itself to building other units as its a natural flow to bring you fingers down to the 3,w,e,r,x,c,v keys.

A few questions after trying it : - you put macro on 1AQW > that's for "Selecting control group" right ? Where do you register them ? (like ctrl+6, ctrl+7 etc) - Unit Control Groups: Caps Lock, `, S : where is the ` button on your keyboard (mine is french) ? - what is the setup for build command ?
Great setup I think, thanks for sorting it out !
|
If Tiger Woods wins the Masters this weekend, I think I will do this and switch it.
PS Seems pretty good though once you get used to it.
|
Sorry, could someone explain to me how one hotkeys buildings to those keys? do i have to be using grid as standard?
Scrap that, i am dumb sometimes.
|
Be careful with the spacebar, it will break if mashed too mnuch It's like the worst button on the keyboard.

This is a very good point! Blizzard has not implemented a method of changing the functionality of the Control and Shift keys. Therefore you MUST use these keys as the control group assignment modifiers. This is one of the main reasons I chose the layout I did as it allows for the closest proximity to the Control and Shift keys. Had this not been the case I may have taken a much different approach.
The ` is right next to the 1 key on my keyboard. This is normally used as a scout hotkey initally and later on replaced by a research building such as an engineering bay or cybernetics core (great way to keep an eye on your upgrades without having to clic on the building)

I have a modified hotkey set up that is EXTREMELY efficient.
It took me 1 week to get down. Afterwards ive been getting better and better. My late game macro is SCARY. (too bad terran has the hardest lategame macro)
I win 95% of my TvT's past the 25 minute mark (THIS IS NOT A JOKE, I LOSE TVTs due to cheese and if we are on even footing my macro BLOWS THEM AWAY) My finger movements are so effecient, think how a bartender swaps a liquer for a spirit in the same motion, he puts the alcohol he doesnt need on the shelf and while hes there he grabs another one.
In my PvT my ghost usage is ABUSIVE as many times protoss just cry at emp in my games because im the only one that can control ghosts masterfully.
Everyone else is getting something off the shelf, putting it back, walking back, going back to the shelf, getting a new bottle.
+ Show Spoiler + Macro aka production: ASD GH tab: F Build Factory: H Control group 0: 0, W
Control groups: These are why the hotkeys are set the way they are
1. Army 2. tanks 3. speciality units....viking maurauders vs zerg, banshees vs terran W/0. Ghosts (W and E are right next to each other) 4. CC 5. ALL PRODUCTION, remember how all the macro was asdgh, the missing letter (tab) is F
All other hotkeys are default like build supply, turrets, reactor, tech labs, I can use 6 hotkeys, save 2 because people put rax, facts, and ports in seperate hotkeys, without needing to move my hand.
Do you ever choke up late game? Are there times where you simply feel overwhelmed by the numbers of drops you have to deal with and simply cannot think about macro? Well everytime you're frustrated, just spam 5aasdfasdfasdfasdfadsf and im sure something will get done

I'm a newb, but I recently re-thought my hotkey layout. I decided to bind the things I did most often to the things that were most easily performed by my natural hand positioning. So, since 'F' has that little notch, it's easy to find. Every keybind is based on something very close to where my hand is and requires little movement. Here's some of what I've come up with.
F - Build Basic Structure G - Build Advanced Structure
With Probe / SCV selected:
FF - Build Pylon, Supply Depot (I think F for 'Food').
FG - Build Gateway, Barracks
FV - Build Nexus, Command Center
FR - Build Forge, Engineering Bay ( R is commonly used in my theme for upgrades )
FA - Build Assimilator, Refinery
GR - Build Robotics Faciliity
GG - Build Robotics Bay ( I think Colossus, I think 'GG' )
With Gateways / Warpgates / Barracks Selected:
F - Zealot, Marine S - Stalker R - Sentry T - High Templar D - Dark Templar, Marauder G - Ghost
With Robotics Facility Selected:
F - Observer A - Warp Prism R - Immortal G - Colossus ( again - the 'G' for colossus )
Control Groups:
I have a DeathAdder mouse, so I rebound control groups 9 and 0 to Numpad * and Numpad /. In my mouse, I changed mousewheel up to Numpad * and mousewheel down to Numpad /, so I can activate control groups 9 and 0 by simply rolling my mouse wheel. I set control groups 6, 7, and 8 to 'Q', 'W', and 'E' as well. I put my main army or whatever I am moving around as mousewheel forward.
My production buildings are mousewheel back, so to check my warpgate status, I simply mousewheel down one notch, then forward one notch to return to my army. I set my Nexus(es), Command Centers, etc to 'E', so to make workers, I simply type 'ED', then mousewheel forward to return to my units.
My 'Mouse Button Forward' button on the side of my mouse is set to 'Alt', so I essentially double the functionality of any key by holding that easy to click button on my mouse down. For example, I can save the camera location of my base as Alt+E. How easy is that ? My fingers never have to move even as far as B on the keyboard, let alone those far off 'F1 - F4' keys...
edit: Ok, I left some stuff out:
To chrono, it's simply 'EF', as I've bound Chronoboost to 'F', as many of my primary spells are now 'F'.
A MULE would be 'EF' as well, as it's most common. A scanner sweep is 'EG', since it's the next easiest button to hit.
My worker probe is set to my 'W' control group, so anytime I need a pylon, it's simply 'WFF'.
Spacebar is the backspace functionality.
Incidentally, for Zerg, spawn larvae is 'F', so it's a quick spam of 'W' to select my queens, and alternating "Spacebar F click Spacebar F click" etc through the hatches. Fingers don't have to move at all. Same thing for chronoing probes - 'Spacebar F Spacebar F', although my Nexuses would be selected with E instead of W.

really liking this. i have thought about how the pros (and myself) really should look into what can be done by changing hotkeys.

I'm experimenting with this cartesian hotkey setup right now, and I like it :D It's really nice, and it's helped my larvae injects a lot. I'm still learning it, but it's going well. Is everything not listed left as default, though? What do you do with the infestor, which has 3 spells, plus burrow? And what do you do for places with upgrades? W, E, R, or do you start at 2, 3, 4 and go to W, E, R as needed?

Glad you like the hotkeys!
I use R for burrow since it is a high demand hotkey I have experimented with the ` (next to the number 1) key as well. Both work well.
This leaves W and E for spells on the Infestor. (Infested Terran and Fungal Growth). On the Queen it is Transmute and Inject. The third spell is the letter X for Spread creep and Neural Parasite. This seems to work really well for me.
As for Evolution upgrades I use WER. If there were more upgrades I would also use the 234 keys. (Which I do for Terran upgrades).

To the OP, would you mind posting your notepad version of your hotkeys? I'm interested in testing this out.

Having read this post, I realised there were a few tweaks I'd love to try out with my grid hotkeys. Have decided to make use of customised positions for some of the grid positions (notably z and x being switched around to the g, h area) So far it seems against computer that my spellcasting has become a little quicker, although that's only the times when I don't automatically hit z or x from habit...
